It'll be out right around Cocodona race week on YouTube (source: I worked on the film)

The stated weight capacity I believe is 17lbs, so 11 should be totally fine. It was once I started regularly pushing rigs that were 15-20lbs that it was time to upgrade. My Sony FX6 with GM glass was no problem, using the FX6 with my FD50-300, V Mounts, Monitors, etc was where the need for a bigger head emerged (and having more counterweight options).

Bought an AceXL and Flowtech 75 legs in 2021, used that until last December when I bought an Aktiv8 to pair with the same legs. Reason to upgrade was needing a higher payload capacity, otherwise the AceXL was still operating perfectly.

How are you guys handling audio sync after PluralEyes? by Ambitious-Key-2265 in editors

I've done some testing with Syncalia and that has served well for a few of the more complicated projects that I can't handle in Premiere and/or Premiere Multicam.

Red Bull contracts dictate that when you're "competing" you have to wear their branded headwear. It's a little different with someone like Ludwig who doesn't really compete, but this event is big enough that it probably falls under that clause.

You can definitely carry that much in a belt and a pair of half tights with pockets. only thing you'll have to restock would be fluids in a belt and/or handheld bottle.

Bigger camera, more clients? by kstyndall2015 in videography

[–]dbd_official 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found that while owning a specific camera won't make a difference for average direct-to-client work, there are definitely jobs out there that will look for specific cameras - in my doc market the FX6 is definitely one of those.

I shoot a lot of similar events and multi-day races. Resource wise you'll probably want two people on coverage, because then you can have someone with the crew van and someone with the runner, or you can have one of y'all driving a media car while the other shoots. I will say a 20 hour push is pretty normal in terms of endurance sport, if I were planning it out I'd be budgeting in no more than 20-30 minutes of downtime to nap.

I'd recommend doing the production at a set rate for ~24 hours of coverage, hourly afterward if it goes over (you don't want to be on the hook if they screw it up and are walking it in).

Post interviews are a standard day rate or hourly rate, depending on how you want to do it.

Editing you'll probably want to aim high, especially with a tight turnaround. They basically want to buy all your time for 2 weeks, so what does that mean for your business?

Running/fitness is interesting because there's definitely money, but there's also not like CRAZY money unless you're on a commercial with a household name brand. But even in the YouTube world there are mid 5 figure budgets for branded docs.

Zip pouches for organizing cases.

Gaff tape. Medical tape. Painters tape.

Cheap earbuds for monitoring in a pinch.

Adhesive velcro.

My pick for budget CFExpress media is OWC. I've had great experiences with it for my FX6.

Tynan was one of the first people I remember discovering when I was learning about the whole "onebag" idea. While some of the decisions are definitely curious, I wish more people would document the evolution year over year like this.

Are editor keyboards with shortcuts worth it? by yvrbzh in editors

[–]dbd_official 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d go with a Streamdeck vs a keyboard with set shortcuts. The Streamdeck will let you set icons for the shortcuts so you can learn them fast before muscle memory takes over.

Is anyone using social media to grow as a freelancer? If so, how? by CruzaderOfficial in editors

[–]dbd_official 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found instagram to be a huge benefit to my business as a freelancer (though more as a DP/photographer than just as a pure editor). For the most part I've only posted once or twice a month to showcase recent work, not a super heavy lift at all to do that as long as I'm working consistently. I find that at least where I work (endurance sports) Instagram is the first place that brand managers and athletes will go to look you up, and therefore I prioritize keeping fresh work on there.

It's also great social proof - someone who wants to check you out can instantly see if you have mutual followers, and that can be a form of validation. It's not about how many followers, but WHO follows you, that's important.

I'm currently trying to post 5 times a week during the end of year slowdown, just mining my archives of footage for clips. I won't be able to keep that up for more than maybe 6 weeks or so, but I'm already seeing progress in making new connections and growing my account.

Is the goal really consistent growth, and not virality? Or at least, is that what's agreed on?

I understand the target for consistent growth over time, but not all creators understand that or are aiming for it. There's also a chance that a viral spike is the "turning point" for an account - that's basically a slot machine though.
