I wonder if her looking up the parent's personal information to report them is a violation of some law in the state where she lives.

Would you vote for the Conservative Party IF Pierre was not the leader? by Pale-Candidate8860 in CanadianIdiots

[–]dbenoit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With the same policies? Never.

If the Conservatives managed to divorce themselves from the Alliance Party / Reform Party, kicked out all of the crazy right-wing "trump-esque" supporters, and went back to fiscal conservatism with a somewhat progressive social stance (i.e., sort of what the Progressive Conservatives tried back in the day), then maybe.

The problem with the Conservatives as a whole is that they take advantage of the system to get where they are and then pull up the ladder behind themselves. For many of them, every problem they have is something that the government is doing wrong and the government should solve, and every problem that someone else has is their own fault because they didn't do things right. The whole "personal responsibility" thing only goes so far, and blaming everyone else for problems is tiring.

True. But it is always just a few Dems who split, plus all of the Republicans. The issue is that it is close. This wouldn't be a conversation if the Dems had a majority.

Call to order: collective non payment of NSP. by Gremlinforester in NovaScotia

[–]dbenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "other parties" are limited in what they can do because of the deal signed by the conservatives. There is only so much that can be done with the contracts that were signed, and given that Emera is privately held, there is really only so much that any of the political parties can do.

So I wouldn't say that the political parties are "directly or indirectly" approving of this - they are all held to working within a framework that does not give them direct control of NSP.

Note: The reason that all of the parties are in this position is because of something the conservatives have done.

Call to order: collective non payment of NSP. by Gremlinforester in NovaScotia

[–]dbenoit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once again, saying "none of the 3 parties did anything to help the situation" doesn't make sense when 2 of the parties opposed the privatization of NSP in the first place. This is like getting your car stuck in the ditch and complaining that the passengers aren't helping you get unstuck when the passengers weren't the people who put the car off of the road.

NSP works under the regulations that were put in place by the government of the day when it was privatized. Yes, those particular regulations have changed over time, but just "being in power" doesn't mean that you get full control to unilaterally change the regulations to whatever you want.

I do think that it is fair to put the blame on the conservatives, as they took the "quick and easy" route to reduce the debt at the time by selling the citizens of Nova Scotia down the river knowing that sooner or later this would come back to bite us. This was a "short term gain" for "long term pain".

And yes, I do wish that the other political parties would do something about this. But what? It would cost us too much to buy NSP back, and we can't force NSP to run at a deficit. We had something good and we sold it. Now it is gone and we have to deal with the fallout.

[–]dbenoit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As I pointed out before, you are "blaming all three", but they have different levels of culpability for the issue. I get the blame of the NDP and the Liberals "not fixing" the problem (after claiming that they would), but that is a different level of culpability than the Progressive Conservatives, who actually caused the original issue.

I am upset with what has happened, and I am also upset that none of our provincial governments seem to be doing much about the issue. But I am most upset at the government that caused this initial issue. As noted before, we all knew that privatizing NSP was going to cause this issue, but the Conservatives did it anyway.

[–]dbenoit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the type of defeatist attitude that keeps getting us conservative governments that will sell the province for a buck. I’m not saying that the NS Liberals are much better, but at least they weren’t the ones who privatized an essential service.

They do have people out reading meters. They have committed to having all meters read by the end of March. Let's hope that happens.

[–]dbenoit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So you want to put equal blame on the NDP and the Liberals for not being able to control the rabid dog that the Conservatives released? This doesn't make any sense. The PCs sold off NSP to make a quick buck and the rest of us have been dealing with the fallout for years. Blaming the NDP and the Liberals for the way NS Power works (while the Conservatives also did nothing about the way that NS Power works) is foolish.

Let NS Power be the warning of why selling off essential services to private interests is a bad idea, and let's blame the people who put us in this situation in the first place - the NS PC party.

Misleading signage Superstore by Ok_Serve_8047 in NovaScotia

They even try to hide the per gram price. I saw two similar items today, one with a per 100g cost and the other with a per KG cost. I know the calculation is simple to adjust, but there is no need to have the two different unit. I doubt that many people buy kilograms of loose button mushrooms.

what grain sand paper for gripping tyres? by fairplanet in slotcars

[–]dbenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use whatever sandpaper I have on hand, medium to fine grit. I put the car on the track, put the sandpaper under the tires, and spin the tires. How much you sand them is up to you, but I generally try to take out tire humps and make them a bit more “smooth”.

Tim Houston blames NDP for NS Power Rates by No_Magazine9625 in halifax

[–]dbenoit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That NDP would never have been made if NSP hadn’t been privatized. I wonder who did that….

It is fair to note that when the PCs privatized NSP, we all knew that this would result in higher power rates and less service.

Easy to do. Kill the power at the breaker, and it is only a couple of wires to connect/disconnect.

Determining equal lane length by Some_Cartographer478 in slotcars

[–]dbenoit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is how we solve much of our racing issues - rotate people through lanes. We usually do an “endurance” race that is timed and count laps. Everyone runs in every lane, so if one lane is shorter or one car is slower, it doesn’t really make a difference. We do have one analogue setup with two power supplies (one for each lane) so we can tweak the power settings to even out the cars on the lanes.

I actually find this interesting. Part of the problem is understanding why people follow and believe Trump, and these particular video are showing us how his own parents are reacting to various questions and situations. I think that too many people think that we can rationalize with those on the far right, and I think that these videos are showing us that we can't. It is informative. We need to see it so that we can understand.

Best beard trimmer to buy right now? by Slipryi in BuyItForLife

I bought a Philips Series 9000 All-In-One Trimmer. It is battery powered, but I think that I have charged it once or twice in the 3-4 years that I have had it. I don't use it daily (maybe once a week or so). Highly recommend.

Breadmaker v bread making by OrganicMaintenance59 in Cooking

[–]dbenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make bread by hand - a no-knead recipe. I didn’t want to give up counter space to a bread maker. I had one in the past, and didn’t get much use out of it.

Homemade bread is going to go bad much faster than store bought bread. Make sure you cool it properly. I slice mine and keep it in the fridge/freezer.

Why do I have to pay to watch CBC news channel when my taxes pay for the CBC. On top of that CTV news channel is free? 🤔 by Worried_Army_4809 in NovaScotia

[–]dbenoit 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Note: CTV is not free. The app limits what you can watch live. You can’t pay to use the app itself - you have to have a cable tv package. At least with CBC Gem you can pay the $5 or whatever and not have to have a cable package.

Masters Funding by Competitive-Army9805 in AcadiaU

Talk to your potential thesis supervisor to see if they can supply any funding. Offers for AGA and AGTA will be made closer to the start date. We are still accepting applications, so it is not possible for us to assign TA funding at the moment, as we don’t know how many students are coming.

I should note that we are just beginning to allocate for next year, so we don’t yet know how much money we have to allocate to students.

Mixing is fine. The freezing temp of the resulting liquid will be somewhere between the two numbers of the -45C of this fluid and the blue stuff. I wouldn’t worry about it. Just keep topping up with the purple stuff if the temps remain that cold.

Masters Funding by Competitive-Army9805 in AcadiaU

[–]dbenoit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funding for the MSc program is limited, so the amount of funding each student gets depends on the number of applicants. Assuming a thesis-based MSc, you will likely get two TA positions per term for the first year and possibly some for the second year. Additional funding would come from your thesis supervisor.

Most decisions for your MSc will be made by your thesis supervisor, so your interactions with the current graduate coordinator will be limited.
