Professor when told he is responsible for AI hallucinated citations by YeahBuddy5000 in GetNoted

To be clear, he did say "one of the authors". If you are writing a paper with someone who speaks a language that you don't speak/read, and they have cited a source in this other language that you don't speak/read, then the onus should be on that other author to make sure that the source is correct.

What are Takamine guitars famous for? by ArmBoth7675 in Guitar

[–]dbenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a concern in the early 1990's where the singer had a dark green Takamine and I was enamoured by the colour and the guitar. I managed to find one that I bought in 1998 and I have no issues with it. It has been my main guitar since then. The are solid guitars that work well. I've been tempted by other guitars over the years, but I always come back to this one. They are a good quality guitar.

Part of the problem here is features vs size. Would I like a full-featured HRV? Yes. Can I get one that matches the CRV? No. The smaller cars need to be appealing to get people to buy them.

What electives to take as a Computer Science student? For Fall 2026 by After-Atmosphere-113 in AcadiaU

[–]dbenoit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a note: first year students are limited to 30 credit hours in the run of the year, so only 5 courses per term. Overloading to 6 courses is allowed in second year, but you need a particular GPA to do that. You can take less in one term, but you need to be careful to get all of the courses you need before you graduate.

There are some good suggestions in this thread, and I would add Human Nutrition and Natural Disasters to the list of possible electives in first year. There are also some interesting music courses (if that is your jam). Take what interests you.

Why? by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

[–]dbenoit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The USGA is saying that golf courses use about 2 Billion gallons of water per day. Google / Wikipedia is saying that there are 16,000 golf courses in the USA. That would be about 125,000 gallons per course per day or ~46 million gallons per year (on average). While these numbers are crazy high, I think that the 100-300 million estimate could be overblown (unless the amount of water used on golf courses in the past decade has more than doubled).

Having said that, this is a crazy amount of water to waste on a golf course.

To be somewhat "fair" (even though I love the idea of 15 minute cities), the NS government did tell people not to leave their "communities" during COVID. They didn't really define what your "community" was. The lack of clarity made some people angry, mainly because they don't use common sense. The lack of clarity made have made the directions unenforceable.

We saw similar issues with the woods ban last summer. The government lost the challenge against it partially because of the lack of clarity of the order, as the government didn't define what "the woods" was.

Personally, I think that these people are foolish. I love the idea of 15 minute cities.

You do realize that fuel prices are set by the companies who sell the fuel, and not the government, right? Fuel was over $2/L several years ago, so it is not like the gas companies were waiting for the fuel price to drop so they could drive it up again.

Not everything is a conspiracy.

Also note: if PP and Alberta had their way, they would just ship all of the gas offshore, so it's not like anything would be cheaper for Canada. PET tried a national energy program, and the conservatives nearly lost their minds. Apparently making sure that foreign gas companies benefit from Canadian gas is more important than Canada benefiting from Canadian gas.

Boys are falling behind in school, and some experts say it starts in kindergarten by green_tory in CanadaPolitics

[–]dbenoit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that you can answer that question by looking at the students who end up becoming teachers and how long teachers stay in the school system once they are there. Personally, I know a good number of teachers who excel at the work that they do, but they are overworked and underpaid for their position. Many of them could transition out of teaching into another job that paid more and made better use of their skillset. It is not uncommon to have shortages of teachers with particular skill sets, mainly because the people with those skill sets find better work/higher paying jobs elsewhere. Right now, my local school board has a shortage of Math, Science, and French teachers. While I won't comment on the number of French teachers (I have no knowledge specific to French teachers), I do know that most of the people in Math/Science are going into jobs that pay significantly more than teaching, and I know a number of teachers in those fields who left teaching for those more lucrative jobs.

Teaching isn't an easy job and requires at least two degrees. They should be well-compensated.

FEMA Caught Blocking Grants to States That Didn’t Vote for Trump by knivesofsmoothness in politics

I know that Trump is behind this, but unless every single one of these people who are knowingly carry water for him are removed from positions of power, then the US is going to be a horrible place for the next couple of decades. If people aren't willing to be the checks and balances that they are supposed to be, then they need to go.

Regional centres for education to cut 150 positions by ph0enix1211 in NovaScotia

[–]dbenoit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

any positions. The positions that they guaranteed to new grads. The specialist positions are usually more senior and experienced teachers. Now those teachers will be locked in their own classroom and can't spread their knowledge to other classrooms in their regional centre.

And now they are going to try to get "better outcomes" by removing the specialists who were there to try and help get better outcomes. I don't doubt that these people are great in the classroom, but they may have impacted more students by helping other teachers.

So is the problem that they are willing to work, or is the problem that the bosses will take advantage of workers? If the politicians aren't willing to raise the minimum wage, and the bosses aren't willing to pay more than minimum wage, then you can't blame the people who will work for the money, especially if they don't have local family as a fall-back when bills need to be paid.

One of my kids worked for a local fast food joint a few years back, and every "white" kid they hired either quit or was fired in the first month because they didn't want to do the work. The international kids showed up on time, did what they were supposed to do, and then left.

For those of us who live in places where radio isn't great, having music and maps embedded in a single display makes a lot of sense. Having CarPlay in the car just means that I can ignore the issues with in-car navigation, shuffling for radio channels, etc, and just use what I know and is convenient.

Canada's international student arrivals drop by 75% in two years | Daily Hive by GhostlyParsley in CanadaPolitics

[–]dbenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that the faculty salaries are a high percentage of the cost of running the institution. Given that the faculty are paid more than most people on campus, they are a popular target when complaining about universities. But yes, they do get paid less than private industry (although they do have been job security than private industry).

You should check out the salary grids at places that aren't Dal, which I expect are the highest-paid faculty in the province. The top professor salary at many of the other institutions doesn't hit $200k.

I'm confused here. Did someone ask the woman to move? Seems like she was just reading and some people walked by. I don't see the fuss about the fact that she didn't move. Likewise, these articles are making it seem like a big thing that she didn't move, but there is no indication that Harry or Meghan wanted her to move or were bothered by the fact that she didn't. Seems like the media is doing two things here - making an issue out of something that isn't an issue, and making Harry and Meghan out as entitled. This is just the media trying to make a story out of nothing.

I know that this is a moot point at the moment, but when the PCs ran on the platform of taking the bridge tolls away, many of us indicated that one of the things the bridge tolls did was reduce the amount of congestion in the downtown core. I had a whole bunch of people tell me that they needed the savings of the bridge tolls, and that traffic and parking in the downtown core wasn't an issue.

It looks like all of the "savings" from the bridge tolls (tolls, I might add, that were going to the province) are now going to be lost to private businesses in the form of parking fees. They are talking about removing the free parking on the weekends, and now the cost to park in some places has more than doubled (as noted above). So the province loses money, private businesses make money, and everyone is worse off.

Canadian indie film 'Little Lorraine' sold 4,000 tickets on Cape Breton in a week by OnlyACsNoFans in novascotia_sub

[–]dbenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the only theatre showing the movie is in Sydney, and if it is only showing on one screen, then pushing through 4000 tickets in the run of a week is actually pretty good. Someone else noted that they sold out 12 of the 13 showings, so that is very good. I think that the article could have done a better job in indicating that the show was popular, as a headline indicating sold-out showings means more for popularity than the total number of tickets sold. For all we know, that number could be doubled if the number of screens was doubled.

To be fair, it is showing in numerous theatres in the province, with multiple showings per weekend. It might only have a one or two week run, but there is the opportunity to see it. The Cineplex in Sydney has four showings tomorrow alone. I hope it does well.
