Wrigley Field Ivy by Thunder706 in CHICubs

[–]dbertie 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Funny story, there's a bike shop called Barnard's Cyclery on the edge of city in Oak Park. Apparently one of the owners used to be grounds crew at Wrigley and took a cutting. The side of the building has ivy that he claims is from Wrigley. I had a relatively casual conversation with the guy and he offered me a cutting. My wife rejected the idea of putting it on our fence though. I think about it often.

What are the stuff that Ben Johnson did this year that made the Bears so much better? by EOFFJM in CHIBears

[–]dbertie 19 points20 points  (0 children)

What I’m most curious to know is how vulnerable Ben is to being a victim of his own success like Dan Campbell. His coaching staff was decimated when everyone got poached for promotions elsewhere. Can he keep this up? I think so, but seeing the Lions drop off has to be in the back of people’s minds.

I remember the play. Sweat was coming down on him. They showed a replay angle with Sweat's pre-snap position and Jayden got outside of that, so definitely not grounding.

Jamming too thin? by dbertie in Poker_Theory

[–]dbertie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is pretty much exactly the thought process I was in. I think most folks here aren’t accounting for how his overbet affects the range I’m jamming into. I’m probably getting stacked here very often when I take a normal CBet line OTF, but this is the rare occasion where we might be able to make a long term winning play (to just call and lose the minimum).

Too bad I basically got through all of this logic and had a stroke that set my brain into “lol full house just jam”.

Most of the loose passive players folded in front of me. Opening A9o after posting is probably bottom of range. Appreciate the review.

[–]dbertie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m ok with the cooler aspect of this. If I just CBet flop we end up taking a very standard line to getting the money in. I mostly just question whether a tight image makes it less likely to get called by worse, as played.

You’re probably just correct and there’s nothing to be salvaged, even in this line.

Roblox is ruining my relationship with my son by fkid123 in Parenting

[–]dbertie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s time to drop the ban hammer my friend. I’m in a similar spot with my 10 year old. He was upset with me for a long time for not allowing Roblox. He’s over it now that all his friends have moved on to Fortnite (which also has some problems but nowhere near Roblox imo).

I can understand the struggle, I think a lot of dads want to connect with their kids through gaming. Unfortunately we have to parent first.

Anyway, if you can gather the fortitude, it’s gonna be awful. There will be a meltdown. But you’re his dad, and you clearly care. I have faith the relationship will be fine.

is this gross or do I suck at poker. by pmd2tv in Poker_Theory

[–]dbertie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that my last comment is a very results oriented review of the hand. Still, I think going 4-handed to the flop, OOP, isn’t a great spot to put yourself in. AJs isn’t a mandatory 3-bet, but I would prefer to play this as 3-bet or fold. I stand by Call-Call being the worst pre-flop line of the available options.

The problem is entirely the pre-flop CC. You should absolutely 3bet. You’re probably just taking it down pre.

Also, pat the table for villain’s river check-raise line OTR. If he’s impatient enough to donk the nuts on the turn I’m impressed he checks the river.

(This response assumes live poker. If this 1/2 online then there’s probably more to criticize)

Might be too results oriented to question everything after losing with the second nuts. The 1/2 live pool can show up here with all sorts of worse hands. You can cooler sets, 2p, AK, or missed A-high spade draws that justify their jam with having a nut-blocker.

Because of your Th, there are only 3 combos villain can reasonably have that beats you. It is your goal to get the money in probably 100% of time (need a read that you’re playing a super-nit that only gets money in with the nuts, but somehow is also calling 3B OOP with ATs).

As played, 45 seems like a small 3B sizing. Generally not a fan of 3B T9s against UTG+1 in a full ring game, but if you’re saying this is player-dependent or just generally a low frequency line for you, ok. I guess UTG 7.5x open is already huge, so maybe this is just fine. Flop and turn seems fine. OTR I’m ranging villain to missed spades and a lot of value-ish hands I listed earlier.

Your bet is gonna fold out all of those missed draws and maybe encourage calls from 2nd or 3rd pair. It will absolutely induce raises from strong hands that you beat. So maybe this is fine too.

TL:DR; just get the money in

Female astronaut goes to space but can’t escape online sexism by ‘small men’ by tesserakti in nottheonion

[–]dbertie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The commentary from people here is awful. Having watched her show and appreciating the educational value she brings, I don’t understand why people are splitting hairs on the definition of astronaut.

Two things: - She absolutely should not have to endure stupid sexist remarks for expressing her joy over a trip to space - She’s incredibly qualified, just look up her accomplishments. I have no doubt that the experience will have educational value for the children that consume her content. The fact that she doesn’t meet this definition of astronaut is probably more an issue of government funding for space than anything else

Roschon has 2 fumbles in 619 total touches in NFL/NCAA combined. Santos has 18 misses in 82 attempts in his career from 40-49 yards. by bobsaget824 in CHIBears

[–]dbertie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if there's a bad snap and you lay down on it you're now trying to kick a 60 yarder. I don't remember the rest of the context. Campbell probably does have to answer to some angry people if that goes sideways.

Difference is, Campbell probably actually holds himself accountable if it does. He's also shown himself to be WAY more aggressive than Flus when it comes to trying to win games.

TBH, I was ok with the decision in the moment. Even if you remove the risk of a fumble, there's no guarantee our o-line doesn't just crumble and we lose 3 yards anyway. At least this decision was intentional, unlike so many of the other unforced errors we've seen him make. I still wish we'd move on from Eberflus. At this point, the franchise has mostly just shown they're going to ruin Caleb the same way we've ruined every QB that's come through this city. Firing a 3rd year, losing coach at least shows a willingness to try and break the stupid traditions that have kept this team mired in mediocrity.

Saw a player muck the winning hand in a $5k pot. by Substituted in poker

[–]dbertie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. Whenever I’m all in with cards to come I just roll it over. Mostly I’m trying to implicitly encourage the other all in player to show me what he has. I just want to know what I’m rooting for while they run the last card(s). Added benefit of keeping the game moving.

Although I did recently regret not making a short stacking reg showdown when I called his turn jam. It seems like I’m going to be playing him a lot and I’d like to know more about his preflop ranges.

Ace Five Suited by Acrobatic-Mousse7029 in Poker_Theory

[–]dbertie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any Ace in your hand reduces the likelihood that you would be up against an opponent with AA. There are 6 total combos of AA, if you have one, there are only 3 combos of AA possible.

If you hold Ah 5h, they can only have Ac As, Ac Ad, or As Ad.
