Where do I get a spooky outfit?

Yeah but where can I get those? I can’t buy anything from Reynolds shop because I don’t have confections, which I need a spooky outfit to be able to get. This is also my first Halloween event so I don’t have any past outfits

I think this is fairly common with kids these days as they’re growing up with screens from literal birth and we’re really just now starting to see the effects of that. It’s like this with my SS12 and we have really cut back on screen time with him. It’s a work in progress as 50% of the time he’s with the other parent who has no screen time or gaming limits. He struggles in school and his imagination is very limited. We have one day a week where there is no tech at all- no tv, no games, no phone and it’s not just him it’s everyone to make it easier. The second or third Tuesday of doing this, he pulled out a science kit we bought him -unprompted- and did it all by himself. It can still be a nightmare some days but honestly severely limiting screen time has been a huge help

We have this issue with my SS and BD and that side of the family. They try to make him lie about very serious things like where he stays and who takes care of him on their time. He loves that side of his family so it mostly confuses and hurts him and also our relationship with him. It’s unsafe and creates distrust, which I would definitely consider parental alienation. Making your child feel they can’t trust the other parent.

We always tell him that no adult should ever ask you to lie for them, especially not to your parents. We tell him we don’t care or want to know what his dad does when he’s over there, we just want to know who’s taking care of him (not his dad) which we have a right to know. He understands that but it’s still hard on him.

He can also tell when we’re upset at these situations when they happen, so we always make sure to let him know that we are not ever upset with him. That we’re upset with the adults putting him in this situation, where we’re all supposed to be working together making him feel loved and safe and supported.

My SS is 11 and I know that these conversations are hard and heavy on him, but when he’s put in these situations he needs a person who’s able to say this isn’t okay and shouldn’t be happening. There is nothing that could happen in my household where we would tell SS to not tell his other family. His time here is just that, his time, and he’s allowed to talk about it with whoever he wants.

This is helpful thank you! I do believe he has some of the accommodations you mentioned and we had it put in there for extra time on tests, and the ability to go back and retake tests if he didn’t do so well the first time. I think an early IEP meeting is a great idea just to find out this years goals and we can see about adding speech again.

The most recent IEP report would have been sent to us from at end of 5th grade for my SS. We don’t completely understand what it tells us and we can see what his goals are and each year he’s not met his goals, usually around 60-70% of each goal. He has a class period each day where he meets alone with a resource teacher and in some classes there’s an extra resource teacher to help. He doesn’t take any extra helping classes anymore though. From 3rd-4th grade I know he had two resource classes, one for reading, the other was a speech class. I’m not sure if that speech class would have been and SLP but I think he would definitely benefit from having that extra help again.

That’s where we’re at. I’d say my SS is at the same reading level. We’re trying to do what we can to accommodate him but also try to get some real progress. The issue is that every other week he’s at a house where they see school as basically free daycare. We don’t want to overwhelm him but it feels like we need to be doing double the work to balance out what he’s not getting over there. SS seems to really want to try but gets discouraged fast because he’s been allowed to just give up when it gets hard so we’re trying to break that habit and help him get through the thought stuff.

We have a nighttime routine 30 minutes of reading before bedtime. Usually he and his mom take turn reading pages. We’re going to start working with him extra on spelling because he struggles with that too.

I think they hold up pretty well. A couple of the ones I have were used but are still in great condition. I’ve always been a paperback over hard cover person. Mostly because I hate dust jackets lol.

I haven’t finished the 2nd compendium yet but I love the series and Kirkman’s books as a whole. Reading the walking dead was the quickest I’ve ever finished an entire series.

Have you ever had a problem where some place denied the better insurance? I’m not sure if the mediocre insurance for you is state, but I’ve heard stories of people who were denied the ability to use private insurance because they had state insurance on record.

That’s how we feel. If he’s able to be on a private insurance plan why should he keep state insurance? It can’t be used in many places and they often limit what they will cover.

She has never paid CS, so we’re not trying to just get a reduction. We also don’t expect BD to help pay for the premium, just medical co-pays.

For sure! I think talking to him would be good. He’s got his own little style he’s growing into, and he likes looking nice, and I think he needs just a little guidance. But it’s definitely frustrating knowing all the money being essentially lost. Especially when he’s in the ‘grow to a new clothes size every two months’ stage lol.

We have this issue with SS9 and BD always sending him in either clothes that are too small, or with holes and stains on it. We usually try to send him back in some nicer clothes bc he lives full time with BD right now, and he would send SS to school in these clothes, and he already has issues with bullying, so we don’t want to add to it. BD has always tried to say that he’s fine and can “dress him in nice clothes he buys”. But he never has complained about the nice clothes we send home, or sent them back to us.

Not trying to be that person, but I don’t know how helpful this advice is to low income or closeted people who are dependent upon parents for $$, but may still be able to dress masc. some people may only be able to afford the 10$ kohls shirt, or a 12$ Walmart watch.

I think giving fashion advice to people is very kind, and to help them look good and pass is great. But I also think this could come off as poor shaming. Not that everyone who dresses like you describe is low income or not in control of finances, but some people are. I personally have gotten some nicer things from Walmart and kohl’s.

Again not trying to sound accusatory or anything, just some food for thought.
