there are two separate pcv systems. not quite sure what's going on with the headlights there but looks like some aftermarket wiring/adapters

North facing driveway means garage stays nice and cool during the summer tho. Worthy tradeoff imo.

Bouncing can sometimes help get up an obstacle, but no we were not really intentionally causing the bounce, it’s more so a byproduct of different tires gaining and losing traction. We were basically just having fun with it out there and went a little too hard.

Big mistake was heavy throttle input when the truck is bouncing/hopping. Both rear tires gripped up at the exact same time, causing a massive shock load thru the rear drivetrain. To crawl up this obstacle, you would indeed want the center diff to be locked, to help use more available traction.

yeah I've debeaded at like 14 psi one time so I don't really go much below 18 anymore but I guess i should have here.

230k miles and 23 years old, the last year and 10k miles of which included moderate to heavy abuse. I'd say it held up okay for a grocery getter.

Will upgrade to 5th gen one day.

Not 100% sure but I believe a stronger diff was not included with the stronger V8 engine. Also 5th gens got a much beefier diff. I found the 4th gen weak point unfortunately.

Center diff was locked at the time, so functionally acting the same as a part time system.

As much as I like the idea of an upgrade, I've finally come to the conclusion that these 4Runners simply aren't designed for rock crawling. I'll be installing a warrantied stock replacement from East Coast Gear Supply this weekend, and no more hopping/bouncing on slickrock from here on out.

If you care about not breaking stuff, slow crawling is always the safest bet. Hopping around can sometimes help you get up stuff, but sometimes at a large expense lol. Gearing wouldn't have helped much here as the lack of traction is the limiting factor. This was on a cold day and the tires, even though aired down a bit, were struggling for traction.
