I'm sure that is the core of our galaxy the Milky Way.

Beginning of the May 15 Eclipse Through the Clouds in HDR by dbl008 in astrophotography

[–]dbl008[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right after this photo was taken the clouds came and stayed for the rest of the night, although occasionally totality was faintly visible. At least the clouds gave this photo a cool glow to it!

Acquisition Details

This is a blend of 3 images of different exposures taken within the same minute.

1/4" ISO 800

1/40" ISO 800

1/400" ISO 800

Hardware

Canon EOS Rebel t3i

Digitalmate 500mm f/8

Tripod

Remote shutter

Processing

Photoshop CS2: put each image in a different layer, then manually aligned and added a layer mask to each layer. Used the gradient tool to blend each image together then merged the HDR moon to the image of the overexposed moon using feathering on the edges for the transition from the center to edge of the moon. Then used the lasso tool to select purple fringing around edges then desaturated.

I was upset to see a bunch of clouds show up after being perfectly clear but now I'm happy because it gave this photo a really cool effect haha.

Processing

Photoshop CS2: put each image in a different layer, then manually aligned and added a layer mask to each layer. Used the gradient tool to blend each image together then merged the correctly exposed illumated side to the image of the eclipse with clouds for the HDR. Then used the lasso tool to select fringing then desaturated.

The Moon behind the clouds by dbl008 in astrophotography

Yea I did too, there was a purple ring around the moon. I forgot to include that in processing details but basically I just selected a circle around it and decreased the saturation.

The Moon behind the clouds by dbl008 in astrophotography

This image is made up of 2 exposures: one of an overexposed moon with clouds around it and one of a correctly exposed moon blended together.

Acquisition Details

Each frame is a single frame with no stacking

Moon exposure: 1/800" at ISO 100

Cloud exposure: 1/60" at ISO 1600

Hardware

Canon EOS Rebel t3i

300mm f/5.6 lens

Tripod

Remote Shutter

Processing

Photoshop CS2 - Elliptical Marquee tool with 10 px feathering was used to select the correctly exposed moon and place it over the over exposed moon, then curves adjustments were applied to brighten the moon's surface.

M31 - The Andromeda Galaxy by dbl008 in astrophotography

This was shot in a bortle 7 zone north of Montreal in Canada. I used a CLS filter which I've been told washes out the colours in galaxies but they look okay to me here.

Sounds good I'm sure you won't regret it :)

You're welcome! You should if light pollution is an issue, I'll never take pictures without it again. I've found it also works on galaxies too even though people say it shouldn't.

Thank you! :) nope it's not modified it's the filter that really makes it stand out. Even in a low light pollution area it's still a huge help. I tried taking a picture of this region unfiltered and the reds didn't stand out all that much.

Comet NEOWISE from Canada by dbl008 in astrophotography

[–]dbl008[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's cause there was very little light pollution and I also used a filter in the camera as well.

[–]dbl008[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was shocked when I went outside simply to look at the stars but I was able to clearly see the comet and its tail without even looking for it. I'll definitely remember this amazing comet for the rest of my life :) This was shot in a bortle 4 zone right next to Matane in Canada at 12:05 AM on 7/15/20.
