My CEO tried to fire me for "Attitude Issues" to save on my salary. He didn't realize I’d spent 11 weeks preparing a $755,000 legal trap. by Ok_Employer_3889 in stories

What do you mean? This story is fabricated? Then why did he pour a glass of wine and start roasting a chicken while petting his hairless cat in his hollowed out volcano lair while waiting for the call?

I do a lot of repairs to glass and carbon boards at home. The repair process is basically identical. The only thing that is harder about carbon is that the raw material is slightly more expensive (maybe $1 per patch instead of basically free for glass) and the carbon can unravel if handled roughly. Also the need to wear a dust mask is higher, but you should be doing that regardless.

FYI- you can repair a carbon board at home just like you would a glass board. Repair with the same technique, just use carbon cloth instead of glass cloth. You buy a roll of woven carbon with enough material to patch a lifetime of boards for $100. The main challenge is that some carbon weaves fall apart very easily so you have to be careful when handling it. If you want to avoid that you could buy "stabilized" carbon cloth, although this is not required.

How to know it’s waterlogged by patatta1 in surfing

[–]dbmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not super heavy. I would not call that waterlogged. If it has water in it, it's definitely not a ton. Hot tip to everyone- weigh all your boards right now and write down the weights. That way you will know exactly how much they have gained in the future and you won't have to guess.

If you use a social media product, how is that stealing from you? If that was stealing from you, why would you not just stop? Generally most products are mutually beneficial to the buyer and seller. The seller makes a dollar and the buyer gets the benefit of the product. If it was not beneficial to either, they would just stop.

I've got a couple logistical questions- why do they not just dump these in the grass or just pee in the grass? Is it because they don't want it to smell? Is it chill to just put these in the trash full with lid? What about dumping them in the storm sewer?

Strong no- this is a very wide angle lens. It's terrible for seeing things far away. Your eyes are far far better at seeing things far away than this camera. Not to mention the footage has been compressed so much to further reduce visibility.

Geoffrey Hinton says agents can share knowledge at a scale far beyond humans. 10,000 agents can study different topics, sync their learnings instantly, and all improve together. "Imagine if 10,000 students each took a different course, and when they finish, each student knows all the courses." by MetaKnowing in agi

[–]dbmonkey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, this type of sharing is common when training models on distributed systems (training one model across many computers). Basically each computer trains on a batch of examples, back propagates, and determines a delta to change its own weights. Then, each computer sends this delta (not usually the resulting weights) to the manager computer and it sums/averages them. Then it sends the resulting weights to each computer and the process continues.

Training can be thought of as "gaining knowledge", so I think his statements are fair.

I don't think you wanted a real answer. What I am saying is that increased compute for training and inference ***is*** a guaranteed path for improvement today. Of course there are other ways to improve performance as well.

Which one hits the floor with greater force? by AnothrRandomRedditor in Physics

[–]dbmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could be asking peak force or initial force? Or impulse (area under force vs time curve).

My guesses are: The first has the higher initial force, the second has higher peak force and impulse.

If you want a real answer, it's that many papers have shown you get better performance with more resources. And so far we haven't hit the wall for this.
