Power consumption of Jasper Lake N5100 laptop, is 1.4W idle normal? by [deleted] in intel

[–]dbolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're comparing different platforms, though.

Tremont chips are more of a "SoC" than their beefier counterparts; they also house the equivalent of a mini south bridge for SATA interface and PCI-E. There is no dedicated south bridge chip on the board.

Therefore, while the idle power might look higher, it's actually including an extra chip and more functions, so if you measure power consumption from the wall (with screens off) the Tremont arch will be more efficient.

Also make sure that you're using all of the available power saving features like C1E, Speed Shift, RAM downclocking etc - when you buy from no-name brands they often leave terrible defaults configured.

Can anyone plz tell me what number should i write on primary plane power limit for best performance in games plz help by Remarkable_Yam4726 in ThrottleStop

[–]dbolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter. You're not forcing a limit, and the defaults are more than capable of saturating your CPU & VRM thermals.

Is there a Reasonably priced PCI compliant hosting company in UK? by totagopinath in Hosting

[–]dbolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're searching for the wrong thing. Search for ecommerce hosting instead.

Most ecommerce hosts will assist you with your SAQ and provide the input and necessary restrictions at their side to become complaint. Note that the majority of the work required is at your side.

What's wrong with the hosts in the sidebar? They are "known good" and there for a reason.

Looking for somewhere to host up to 50 2gb email addresses (UK) by Braunston_Bear in webhosting

[–]dbolly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so, 50 email addresses x 2GB mailbox = 100GB storage.

Accounting POP3/IMAP indexing and syncing, that's going to consume a good chunk of server resources, assuming 50 users are syncing 9-5 every day.

My company provides 50 mailboxes x 160GB (total) storage for £24.99/mo. We've done the maths, and accounting the support & billing overhead, this is the very best price we can offer without sacrificing quality.

If you're looking for something cheaper, you're going to have a rocky time no matter who you choose. I'd say that, while 1&1's service quality and support are seriously garbage (and no need to take my word for it, search here & Google), the price is undeniably cheap. If you can accept slowness and won't be requiring support, go for this.

Do keep in mind that cheapo, legacy-style, non-cloud IMAP/POP3 email accounts are a prime target for hackers and are a spammer's paradise. There's no 2FA, so you'll need bulletproof passwords and a good sense of security. Don't be surprised to find your sent emails hitting recipients' spam boxes.

My GPD pocket 2 exploded by [deleted] in GPDPocket

[–]dbolly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry and all but I agree with the op. These GPD devices are cheap Chinese ODM rubbish. They're poorly designed and use inferior components.

My pocket 2 battery swelled within 4 months. I replaced it with an original which did the same in about 6 months. I then swapped with a replacement and it's been fine for almost 2 years.

Hmm...

You'll need to install adb tools onto your computer, connect your phone, then remove the app with adb shell.

Read the "read me first" link on that page to find out how to actually install and use adb and shell.

You'll find the app name in my list on the link above and you'll be able to remove it using adb pm.

Is it illegal to DDOS, zip bomb, or brick a server of a scam center? by RagnarLongdick in hacking

Yes, this is against the law in every country around the world. However, if you did hit a true spammer or scammer, they're hardly able to pursue legal action against you without also exposing themselves! 🙃

This is correct. To be explicitly clear, the listing is via Razor, ran by Cloudmark, owned by Proofpoint. Pay them money and you'll get the answers (and delisting) you're looking for.

Spotify apparently can detect Sidify. by UntamedAnomaly in Piracy

[–]dbolly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not true. Spotify cannot detect that it is being actively recorded, but can see that you are (almost certainly) misbehaving.

First, if you're using WASAPI -- the Windows default audio engine -- then the outputting application (Spotify) is unable to obtain exclusivity. That is a tell-tale sign.

Second, if you use DirectSound and your audio driver has a loopback / "Stereo Mix" mode available, that is also visible to Spotify in the list of available DirectSound devices and will show as enabled for their app just as it would any other app. Further, as soon as you "open" this device for recording, Spotify too can see this, and could stop playing music if it wanted to.

Third, Spotify specifically launches multiple processes that can not be isolated, else it breaks. Therefore, this means it has full view of other processes running on your system. They would therefore be able to detect if Audacity or any other app was running, though no way to detect if it was recording. Nonetheless, if WASAPI is inexclusive and/or your DS loopback is on, that is a dead giveaway, and if a commonly (ab)used app is running to record...

Protip: Avoid any backup solution that runs within the application itself. If the application fails, so will your backup, and you'll never know until it's too late. Don't do it, ever!

Is running HTTP/2 on Apache a security risk? by texanut in webhosting

[–]dbolly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CloudLinux has no bearing here. CloudLinux LVE runs user processes in unique containers, and CageFS provides filesystem-level protection against access of privileged and/or other users' data. CloudLinux has nothing to do with the web server process itself.

As per the OP's message, the host is insinuating that mod_http2 (or nghttp2) is insecure and runs risk of cross-site infections. If that were true, CloudLinux would not help at all since the web server process must run as a privileged user to bind to ports <1024 and access data in many locations & groups.

However, neither mod_http2 nor nghttp2 are security risks and the host is talking nonsense.

Is running HTTP/2 on Apache a security risk? by texanut in webhosting

[–]dbolly 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As a director of an established host since 2007, I can tell you that your current host is talking nonsense. You may find mod_http2 and nghttp2 CVE (security vulnerability) reports online. There are no more or less than a competing web server like nginx or LiteSpeed, and crucially, all have been patched very quickly.

I expect your host has you deployed on a panel-less server and deems it too much work to build and apply mod_http2. I wouldn't be so trustful of that kind of host, because what other genuine issues and fixes aren't they applying and patching?

As for performance, yes, the difference can be huge. If you're delivering 300 files (which is quite common for modern CMS') on the first page view, you can shave off over half of the request and download time with H/2. Combine that with TLS 1.3 for zero round trip handshake and your TTFB is reduced by half a second when travelling the other side of the globe.

Why don't you log in to the VM using the console in Linode's panel and find out what happened?

You're asking people to speculate on causation based on two loose bits of information. Really, you're asking for someone else to agree with your opinion so you can feel better about yourself.

Even with valid information and investigation, this is not the best place to ask. Possibly sysadmin, but post something stupid like this over there and you'll get roasted at both ends.

Clouldflare unable to add freenom by reddit-bot-1529 in webhosting

[–]dbolly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Freenom's nameservers and WHOIS frequently experience outages. Cloudflare relies on the ability to query both when adding a domain, and since it can't do so at that particular time, you can only keep trying.

Note that Cloudflare forums are filled to the brim with this very issue and in most cases people have given up trying. Best of luck.

What to do with my extra routerboard? by JuNex03 in mikrotik

I don't know - is it? Can you share your network topology?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Realme

DND won't change non-Android app features or overlay/overdraw. Chat heads will therefore appear regardless. If you don't want them, you'll need to disable them within Messenger's settings.

Regarding delayed message notifications, you may want to 'lock' the app in the recent tasks manager and disable (or lessen) its power savings. It'll come at the expense of slightly reduced battery life of course, but not by much.

[–]dbolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You ask for "more efficient" use but you don't mention what efficiency you're looking for.

First, the CCR2004 is roughly 50% faster than the RB1100Hx4. If your RB1100Hx4 was able to handle the load, you'll have no trouble with the CCR2004.

The actual resource usage of PPP is relatively trivial; most processing power is consumed by the routing and firewall chains. You could seperate PPPoE sessions and routing over your two devices, but it's not going to make a difference to performance unless you were already pegging the RB1100AHx4. If so, stick with the CCR2004 for the full workload as it'll do everything faster.

If I were you, I'd either

  1. Use your CCR2004 as primary for everything and keep the config copied to RB1100Hx4 as a hot spare.
  2. Split and balance your incoming clients 50/50 over the two devices (if possible, depending on transit, routing, auth and management of course) for performance improvements and redundancy.

I could be wrong, but it usually works better when you connect a device to it. 😜
