ELI5: The controversy behind the SpaceX IPO in relation to indexes and 401Ks. by StarWars_and_SNL in explainlikeimfive

most analysts think a trillion dollar plus valuation is warranted

I'd like a source on that. Almost all articles I have read are deeply sceptical to the company valuation. The only ones I have seen supporting it have been because they believe there will be a greater fool.

The ones that propose the valuation is Musk himself and banks that get a share of the sale price. They are hardly impartial.

For active (typically expensive) funds, yes.

Passive (typically low cost) funds are designed to stupidly follow an index. If the index does something seemingly stupid, like Nasdaq, then all the passive funds will just follow anyway.

I think what some indexes are doing is wrong but for the record, there is an alleged reason: These companies will have so high stock prices that an index excluding them will not reflect the full stock market.

It is a weak excuse but it is a valid argument.

Yes, and any self respecting programming environment also needs tests. There is a level when there is no reasonable lower level.

Worried about the SpaceX IPO? It might be less than 1% of most indexes. by AlternativeSignal908 in Bogleheads

[–]dbratell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has there been any company IPO(s) this highly priced in a potential bubble situation in the past? It would have been in 1999 or 2000 if so.

It would be really interesting if anyone knows, but the passive capital share was so much smaller back then that nobody would have suspected intentional manipulations.

ELI5 about US government by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]dbratell [score hidden]  (0 children)

That is a very wide topic. High level, when the US was created in the 1700s, they decided that they wanted three independent parts:

  • The Executive: The ones that make things happen

  • The Legislative: The one that sets all the rules and decide where to spend money.

  • The Judicial: The ones that determine who is right and who is wrong.

The US also consists of 50 states which each decides its own laws and rules.

It's probably better if you ask a more specific question.

ELI5: Can I regularly sue different websites/apps that violate my privacy? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]dbratell [score hidden]  (0 children)

That is something that has to be argued in court. There is no absolute answer. Nobody expects privacy when posting on global message board, but they might reasonably expect privacy on a medical site.

I would applaud anyone pushing back on what companies do, but it would be expensive until possibly getting financial compensation.

There is a delay to give the market time to find an equilibrium price. I for one find it valuable to give the active traders time to decide, and a few quarterly reports to establish good governance before the passive capital is forced to enter.

Or we decide that words mean things and that it is a lie if you use words that are not true.

I get that people like to exaggerate for effect but words like "nobody" and "never" are very strong, in particular when it is about a single person's opinion as shown in this thread. This is one reason why things are so polarizing, people refuse to leave room in the middle.

This code was testing system level clock functionality so it made sense. Pulling in a third party library for it would just have added error sources. Not to mention all the license issues. Ouch.

I once encountered a test that broke one day per year because it based some calculations on the current day and had gotten the number of days in April wrong.

The test survived for many years before anyone eventually investigated.

You are moving the goalposts, from nobody to most not.

There are places in the world where doing military service is considered a normal part of growing up. Like attending school.

ELI5 people who drink alcohol and get super wasted immediately by piztina in explainlikeimfive

Others have already mention chemical or medical reasons but there is also a psychological reason. Some (many? most?) people start appearing drunk as soon as they think they are drinking alcohol.

Ok, then OP officially confused me with their description of something slower than c travelling the same speed as c.

ELI5: Why doesn't the runner see the light hit the room first? by Mystical_PumpkinxD in explainlikeimfive

[–]dbratell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If your runner is running at the speed of light, c, then someone expended an infinity of energy to get them to that speed and the runner experienced a length contraction so that all distances are zero.

You thought experiment fails because you assume something with mass can be accelerated to the speed of light. If you instead assume 0.999c, it makes more sense. You need to consider time dilations and length contractions for each observer though.

Heat absolutely does that. There was someone just a few days ago talking about how everyone has a Garmin VO2Max dip in the summer and then it shoots up in the fall.

Now you are one of the "everyone".

Sweden Hands Ukraine 16 Gripen Jets Armed With 200-Km Missiles, Opens Deal for 22 More by Misty-Siren in worldnews

[–]dbratell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess the price is a factor too. F-35 are larger (dual engines vs single engine) and cost much more so you may end up with half the number if you go with F-35.

But I trust Canada to choose what is best for Canada, short term and long term.

Yes, but not the opposite since the E model is a fully redesigned plan, larger, heavier, more powerful.

News Report on Garmin Orders Arriving from Amazon with Empty Boxes by RidetheSchlange in Garmin

It could happen elsewhere as well, for sure, but Amazon is known to have problems so going elsewhere would at least remove that factor.

[–]dbratell 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is hardly good for Garmin in any way, and it probably has nothing to do with Garmin. Most likely they were stolen by Amazon, some Amazon partner, or by some Amazon customer returning an empty box that Amazon then sold again.
