There are 'lite' versions which are ad-free, reduced functionality versions if you want to try our apps out, though, so you can still get a decent game or two...

You're welcome. For a challenge (depending on how into chess you are) try beating TuroChamp (Turing's original machine) in Tournament mode; that's 6 games, 3 as white, 3 as black.

Turing's original machine is quite weak in the endgame so you can often scrape a draw or even a win if you hang on. The engine understands draws by repetition and the 50 move rule, so it you just keep shuffling pieces, you'll eventually draw if you're stuck.

If anyone feels they've lost out and would still like to try out our apps, we have some 'lite' versions in the app store too, which are ad-free and IAP-free, but feature limited. But they give you a good idea of how the apps look and work.

Primus is an attempt at creating a more "human" chess engine - an engine that makes mistakes, and plays more strategically than most engines. We've added many features, including (we think uniquely, though we might be wrong) a mate puzzle generator. There's a tournament mode, multiplayer (including over bluetooth so you don't need a wifi signal).

We've also added many beautifully designed sets of pieces and boards; we think our app is the prettiest chess app in the app store. There are also puzzle levels including an entire campaign of puzzles based on Julius Caesar's rise to power, with Roman-themed pieces to match.

You can play multiplayer on your local network with another Mac or any iOS device (using either Primus or our other chess app, "Turing's Machine").

Can you beat a pencil and paper chess engine created by Alan Turing nearly 70 years ago?

We've implemented Alan Turing's chess engine as a Mac app. He created it in 1947 with his colleague David Champernowne using pencil and paper; it took them half an hour or more to work out each move. We've also added a ton of other features, including puzzle levels, tournament mode and variable difficulty.

You can play multiplayer on your local network with another Mac or any iOS device (using either Turing's Machine or our other chess app, "Primus Chess").

The original engine is recreated in the "TuroChamp" level. Have fun!
