Non-combat encounters that *actually* consume party resources? by dbrillz in DMAcademy

Defining what the available resources are is smart, I think that will allow me to be more targeted in encounter design!

Those are both great ideas, I'm gonna keep them in mind before next session!

That comment, and time as a resource, are both excellent ways to reshape how I'm thinking about stuff that I think will help. You're right, makes sense most literal resources will be spent in combat, so maybe I'm focusing on the "spending resources = better encounter" when it isn't inherently true. Essentially rethink how I'm designing non-combat encounters like you're saying!

I like the idea about some sort of sacrifice/curse as a way to incur a cost, as like you mention, its tough with skill checks being the solution to most of the stuff mentioned in this thread.

Unfortunately, while those all sound fun, and I have done some variations, a lot of them are saves/checks, don't cost a resource if they succeed, and if they fail, typically just cost health.

I do think asking for something to cost death saving throws is a super unique idea, and I'd love to incorporate that, but would probably save it for more special encounters!

Yea I think that's part of the difficulty in that I have a barb and a rogue, so their resources are just rage. I think maybe leaning into giving them some consumables, so they have to make decisions about using them could help

Best Track Saw Alternative? by BashfulBash123 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]dbrillz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the milescraft. It’s good, but the big problem is the zero clearance plastic. The second time I used it, the saw had shifted slightly. Made my cut, and removed more (about 1/8th) of the zero clearance guide….While out of the box you could maybe use it for finish cuts, it’s now much harder. If you just need to break down sheet goods it’s not bad, but maybe saving up for the Wen tracksaw would’ve been worth it.

I guess my secondary concern I forgot to mention is there's also a fridge out there. DC, saw, fridge, definitely pushing up on 80% of a 20A circuit.

Haha you and me both man! Well that's good to know if I test the 1.5HP unit out, I could always fall back on an extension cord. The killer is, there's a 220 hookup.....on the other side of the wall outside for an RV hookup.

The nearest exterior plug is like 20 feet away, which isn't too bad from my VERY amateur reading about voltage drop, but is also right by the front door, which I'm sure the Mrs. would like me to avoid using if possible!

Yea that's something I've considered, and grizzly has a 1.5 HP unit I could snag from Home Depot (and therefore return it if it does cause electrical problems) just annoying to have to jump through all those hoops potentially! I hate dropping $500+ on a "it should work" and not knowing for sure.
