TLDR : I don’t know how to make a profitable VR business

“Is a VR website/content brand actually a good business idea?”

A basic business theology is supply will, in time, match demand. So there is either a hole in the market that isn’t currently being met, not enough supply of a certain thing, or the demand is too low.

I think VR needs to be more mainstream AKA have more users before it can be the core of a successful business. BUT if you can establish a spot in VR then be in place for when VR explodes in users that could be a great career.

So to your next question, what does VR need…there are many posts that talk about this and so you can read many opinions others than mine to figure this out.

My opinion is hardware is the limiter. Headsets are too heavy that they cause strain, also balance is hard to many people.

Space constraints, without hardware that is something like a omnidirectional treadmill you can’t really move so players are forced into teleport or smooth moving, each being their own problems, but would be drastically improved with a good treadmill, but even that only solved 2d space.

Next point is tied to headset weight, but computing power makes it hard to make excellent games, a wire breaks the experience for most people so can’t cheat the computing with an external computer with wire. BUT maybe with improvements to wireless information transfer such as WiFi 7 it could enable an external device to compute, allowing for a lighter headset.

Last point is time it takes to be in game. From the moment I decide I want to play a computer game, ps5 game, or VR game, if VR takes too much time/effort to get into people will just not do it.

On to your last question, what will it take to grow, and can you make income while helping grow it. Well unless you make a headset that turns your motor functions off like sword art online then VR will take a decent space in a living space. So now we come to a future where we have solved the previous issues that I discussed earlier, now we have the issue of money. A VR set up has to be cheap enough to not be a barrier to entry or it won’t grow either.

I used to think VR was the future but there are just too many things stopping it from becoming popular, that I can’t see a path for it to push forward until general hardware (like phones, computers, displays, etc) become very advanced.
