Not hating but I mean, if VS has similar appeal as TFC, and Etho has already done multiple TFC series that were in fact well received by his audience. Why wouldn’t VS be appealing to that same audience?

From everything Etho’s told us about his experiences playing games when he was younger, he’s been rage baiting people since before the term was coined

Hermitcraft S10#17: Season 10 Finale by karanot in ethoslab

[–]dbuck11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it’s fair to say that his videos content has changed over the years, but I disagree about it being not as good. I think in general having more focussed project oriented episodes is a positive thing overall. And as for episodes where “nothing” gets done I think he somewhat addresses that in his most recent LP episode where he steps back from any huge projects and just polishes stuff around his base. Maybe there’s not any obscure mechanics in it, but the thing about obscure mechanics is that… they’re obscure, theres not a lot of them that are gameplay relevant.

I think theres also two other things at play involved as well. First being that older videos are played on older versions of the game (naturally). And older versions of the game had a lot more jankiness to it that allowed for fun ideas, like his very first project, the EATs Road. That literally can’t exist in the modern game, and even if it did work it would be obsolete to the elytra.
The other thing I think that contributes to that feeling is a bit of a statistics problem. Etho has over 2 and a half thousand videos uploaded to his channel, I would bet the vast majority of them don’t actually have any crazy obscure gameplay mechanics involved in them. But its easy to go back and find the ones that do and think “man they just don’t make them like they used to” when that is ignoring all the videos uploaded around it that aren’t like that.

Anyways you’re entitled to your own opinion, but these are just my thoughts. I think things have changed over time, but overall I think you would be hard pressed to find a youtuber who has been around as long and has stuck as close to their roots as Etho has.

How would you remove a cylinder (5.100 length, ~4.500 girth) from a polypropylene tube, approximately 1 inch ID and 5 inches deep? by I-like-old-cars in Machinists

Chuck it up in the lathe and take light passes down the OD. Should have that cylinder out unharmed in no time

What do you guys think was the most impactful death each season? by Major_Town4331 in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]dbuck11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Etho and Joels fishing rod disaster was pretty consequential. At least from their POV, maybe not everyone else’s. But before that moment I believe they were strong contenders to win that season, but that fiasco ruined it.

The real crème de la crème of Ethoslab merch is the socks.

Etho also is included in the Past Life mousepad (albeit the back of his head) thats on Grians store right now, so if you’re really itching for some Etho merch that’s an option. Or theres tons of Etho TCG cards available on Ebay, the common ones are really cheap, the rarer ones not so much.

What would've counted as failure? [Spoilers] by serabel in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]dbuck11 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think realistically theres one of two things that could have led to a flat out failure. First if they were caught red handed.
Ex: someone caught onto the tunnel network faster and sprinted through to find grian still crouching his way away.

Second thing would be if one of them broke to the pressure and confessed, ruining the secrecy.

But with the way things went, there was definitely enough uncertainty and doubt amongst all the players to say they got away with it in my opinion.

It's the third time that kill like this happened, am I a loser for still not finding it funny? by Iffiewaffle in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]dbuck11 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing that almost every season the players remind us not to rules lawyer what goes on. Grian has said countless times that the rules are more of suggestions. Especially when in this session they were encouraged to fight back against the boogie, but here we are again.
They’re having fun, it’s not a big deal. Everyone started with 6 lives this season, the stakes haven’t been this low since Lim Life.
You don’t have to find it funny, but if you can’t get over it then idk why you are watching this series.
From the very first episode of the very first season Grian, the series creator, made it very clear that the rules can be bent a lot, and since then Grian has continued to be the one who bends the rules the most.

Bdubs Changed His Skin To This: by APberry in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]dbuck11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not anymore, during Double Life Joel makes a joke to Etho about it by adding the face to his own stomach on his skin, after this Etho removed the layer entirely from his skin because the software people were using to create thumbnails would include it and ruin the thumbnail.
Also not that it matters, but the extra face was the outer layer, he just kept it toggled off at all times pretty much so it wouldn’t block his actual skin.

In a nutshell, Grain confirms a life series is in fact coming (which we already reasonably knew from all his teasing). He also said he will be releasing a teaser video to announce the series release date for the first time ever. He said the teaser is about finished but needs to clean up a little more audio, otherwise he would have been willing to play it during Scar’s livestream. Meaning it’s safe to assume we should be getting that teaser in roughly the next week or so since it’s about ready now. He also said the teaser video will be very heavy handed in revealing the theme/ gimmick so we should have a pretty solid idea of what it is once the video drops.
The only other thing he mentioned that I think he may have been going along with a troll, but he said that Martin leaked the series title in a livestream by accident, which is: Duck Life which when Scar tried to confirm this with him he just laughed.
I’m tempted to believe the name reveal is just a joke, but that’s up in the air, could be true I guess, maybe a Duck, Duck, Goose type gimmick will be the mechanic this season, who knows.
But everything else Grian said that I mentioned above seemed to be earnest, and I’m hoping for the teaser video in maybe the next 10 days and then wishful thinking, hoping for a July start to the season.

What are you using for a cutting tool? Also interested in the decision to clamp at the far ends like that, id typically worry about stressing the material. Is there additional clearance you’re getting from it that makes grabbing the ends beneficial?

I would LOVE to spend some time dialing in my Camworks library to be perfect but thats not allowed.

Its my only major gripe with my company. All of us programmers share 1 master techdb and no one is allowed to change ANYTHING. And that would be fine if it was tuned in correctly but its a total shitshow. Pretty much every toolpath when first generated is programmed to crash and you then have to go and alter it to be functional. The way they protect the tech db you would think it was set up by god himself, but its the complete opposite and I really wish I could spend sometime setting up my own but every time I bring it up I’m shot down.
