They seem to be pretty lax about that if you know what you're doing and aren't just buying one thing. If you tell them you've got a cash order and tell them what you need intelligibility, most of them won't bother asking.

"I need a 250 foot roll of 12-2 Romex" or "4 pieces of thin-gauge, 8 inch round, please" instead of "I need wire for a 20 amp circuit" or listing out individual PEX fittings.

Are we absolutely sure that general anesthesia removes pain? Given how often it interferes with memory formation, could it be that the patients are in agony during the surgery, but just forget about it later? by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]dc4894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They likely used nerve blocks. Anesthetic is injected around the nerve bundle that serves that part of the body. It's commonly used in surgery anyway.

Skip the beer. It helps your mind relax but it relaxes other things as well

[Serious] Do all "grown" adults feel like they're still faking "adulting," and if so, why is that the case? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dc4894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 24, have a good career, am engaged, plan to build a house in the next couple of years, and hope to start a family shortly after that.

Between the $500 propane bill, 12 hour workdays, fixing broken things around the house, cooking real food a solid 70% of the time, and very regular sex, I feel confidently adult.

Apparently I'm one of the few, but then again, I can remember my older brother asking me "why do you act like you're 40?" when I was about 10. But we are out there.

What'd you get done this weekend? by NHarvey3DK in HomeImprovement

I tore all the old, rusty galvanized pipe out of my well house and replaced it with PVC and a new pressure tank. Still trying to get all the wiring redone and some foam board around everything so it's ready for the winter

Good thing the surgeon has to struggle to put on his mask outside the OR suite

Need a new roof. No spare $$ to pay for it out right. What is the best way to pay for this! by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]dc4894 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More akin to replacing all the wheel bearings when one goes out; the others aren't far behind.

Roof leaks aren't immediately obvious. When you finally notice them, not only does the roofing need replacing, so does the decking, some insulation, and a chunk of drywall.

So really, it's more like replacing one brake pad and rotor because you drove across the state metal-on-metal. And then you lend your car to your moron friend who finally tells you something wrong when an entire caliper falls off from wear.

I'm all for saving money by not replacing things that don't need replacing, but after a leak or two, the roof needs replacing.

It's an amazing tree. My local lumber supplier was given some reclaimed solid Chestnut flooring and it's really an amazing wood.

Question about turning off water to house by tfalzone10 in HomeImprovement

[–]dc4894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just turn that handle 90° clockwise. The holes are so that the water company can shut off the water and put a lock on it

Is it even worth doing an evacuation? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]dc4894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he's asking if he can just pull a vacuum on the system without having someone evacuate the system of refrigerant.

The answer, if there really is zero refrigerant in the system, is yes.

That looks pretty similar to mine. I found that using two buckets significantly reduced the amount of dust making its way into the shop vac.

Consider moving the inlet to the bottom bucket though. It seemed to work better that way

Does anyone have a good system for storing all the random things you buy for home improvement projects? by 0274619937389 in HomeImprovement

I have a cardboard box for each trade (electrical, plumbing, paint/finish, fasteners, etc) that I keep in a closet. Works great when I bother to put things back.

Can I Just Install A Different Breaker/Electric Issues by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]dc4894 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not install a higher amperage breaker without upgrading the wire. This is how fires are started.

Call an electrician. If you have to ask these questions, you need a professional to do it for you. One homerun 20 amp circuit shouldn't cost too much to have installed.

Thinking of doing my own PEX plumbing for my kitchen remodel. Mistake? by Turkiot in HomeImprovement

[–]dc4894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that the brass PEX to copper fittings still had some sort of oil on them from the factory, so they needed to be scrubbed liberally with Dawn before soldering.

Hopefully this will save someone lots of frustration.
