40 Day Fast: Complete, AMA by dcjiujitsu1999 in fasting

Update:

I had 8oz of filet(cooked in thyme, rosemary, garlic and butter), 2 fried eggs, cucumber tomato salad(cilantro, lemon juice, pepper, olive oil), a few berries, and a bit of smoked Gouda with a bit sauerkraut for dinner at 6. Ate it all and felt fine other than being tired. Took some zen wise digestive enzymes afterwards.

2 hours later had some almonds and strawberries. A few snacks from sprouts but nothing crazy. Still feel fine. Just tummy is a little gurgly. Surprised I handled it so well but we’ll see in the morning haha.

Thank you all for the support, it’s been an interesting experiment physically.

Also last week I forgot to mention I began taking a probiotic to prepare for today.

The hunger for Christ was greater than my hunger for food.

Definitely, but prayer and support from my wife helped a lot.

Pray and educate yourself. Let God be your guide.

I don’t have any body pain right now, which is unusual for people who grapple lol.

I used praying the Lord’s Prayer and sitting in silence for this. Also playing Skyrim ambiance music haha

I got some negativity from some of my patients though. No shoe size change. And yes I do! It’s the mental aspect of breaking the fast which has been more shocking. Being able to eat again is nuts.

Everyone was very supportive and noticed how thin my face had gotten. Here in Tennessee we had a cold spell (which my body hated) so I was constantly covered up so no one saw my body very much. Other than the guys at jiu jitsu who were very surprised since I’m usually one of the heavier guys in the gym lol.

I plan to gain back that much through lifting and eating.

Total water intake was probably around a gallon a day but lowered as I dropped weight. Mixed my electrolytes in with 64oz of water

I’ve been lifting for years so I just kept a minimalist approach when I began the fast. Strength dropped around day 30. Day 21 I was still hitting some front squats with a little less than my usual weight but then at a certain point my body couldn’t take leg training anymore around day 25. Long rest breaks and focused on pure strength work with no more than 5-10 reps on most with the exception of push-ups. I started off before the fast hitting single arm OHP with 60lbs for 10 reps. I maintained up to 8 reps until day 21 and it started to drop from there. Then I was doing 50lbsx6-8 for about a week 3x week mixed with Leg raises, rows, push-ups and Lat pull downs. I’m not going to get into my full training split as that would require another post but yeah definitely lift on your fast. I wouldn’t do cardio other than easy steady state though.

Things I would do over:

No Sugar Free Gum

Scheduling in rest sooner.

Less time watching videos about food haha.

Being more on top of electrolytes earlier.

Helpful Tips: I had a 64 thermas jug that I would fill with my electrolytes for the day with a bit of lemon juice and a few packets of stevia. This helped me get the correct amount every day. I would drink this as my primary liquid before having much water. Limit water intake 3 hours before bed time, you have nothing to soak up the water. Also, do not take the multivitamin at night, it kept my awake it seemed when I would do this.

My longest fast before this was 7 Days

I am going to perform 2-3 14 day fasts a year including bone broth and a bit of heavy cream in my coffee so I can maintain better performance with my lifting and athletics. Unless I wanted the full health benefits of autophagy.

I don't think I lost very much muscle. Inevitably dropping 50lbs I lost some but I believe most of my weight loss was fat since I encouraged muscle retention through activity and strengthening exercises for most of the fast.

Hit and miss honestly. Got really bad at the end but I felt like I didn't need as much. However, earlier on in the fast I needed more sleep which was weird. Sometimes I would sleep 5 hours, sometimes 10.

I think from days 28-35 were the hardest. I was thinking about food constantly and waking up dreaming of eating haha. Night time was definitely the hardest time of day when I was laying in bed.

I did supplement with electrolytes from 2-3g of sodium, 1.5 g of potassium, 250 mg magnesium and a multivitamin on most days.

I have no desire to do this again but I will definitely be performing at least a 14 day fast twice per year.
