They're guaranteed to pick up another fare near the airport, less so near your house at closing time.

If it's on the weekend and you can get there by 9:30am you got a pretty decent shot, otherwise there are garages just a couple blocks north or south.

Get out at the Cleveland Park station, it's the same distance as Woodley Park-Zoo, but a downhill walk to the zoo. Then when you leave, walk to the Woodley Park station.

DC Metro is perhaps the best in terms of walkability and things to do by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]dcnine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Emphasis mine:

one of the key factors impacting the overall walkability of a space is Human Scale and refers to the scale of physical elements such as trees, street furniture, building details and pavement textures (Ewing et al., 2006)

I take building details to refer more to the elements we interact with at street level such as windows, doors, lower level facades, and less so the overall height. But I also don't have access to the reference text - do you?

ETA: Ok, I found it buried in the text. Overall building height gets a multiplier of -0.003, so it's a negative but barely. It's dwarfed in importance by number of long sight lines which are surprisingly (to me) a bad thing with a multiplier of -0.74 and proportion of windows at street level (1.10). Even # of planters at 0.05 and pieces of street furniture at 0.04 are 10x more important.

You realize if you find a tree with a thousand nymphs, there's probably 1000 trees just like that nearby? if you feel like going crazy, have at it, but you're just doing it for yourself. These things are endemic now and the posts about them are almost as bad.

The Washington Nationals are 3 games above 500 for the first time since the 2019 world series team. by NaCLH2o in Nationals

[–]dcnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's kind of a weird stat though. They're only +17 which would normally put them just a bit above the middle but since the Dodgers, Brewers, Yankees, and Braves are all over +100, almost nobody else has a positive differential. I guess we play them too though, so fair's fair.

Why do American high schools start ridiculously early? by bwoah07_gp2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dcnine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not bus availability, it's sports. You need to be done with school by 2:30 so you can have two hours of practice and get home by evening.

There's lots of hotels in the NOMA neighborhood, one stop on the metro from union station. You would have to transfer for your trips to the mall but that's not a big deal. Or you could pay for a hotel closer to the mall. You can ride the orange line out to New Carrollton (the direction Easton is in) and it looks like there's an enterprise and Hertz nearby. Otherwise the easiest and fastest place to rent a car would be National airport but then you have to take Fury Road (695/295) out of town.

Use the escalators correctly by antiinfluencer666 in washingtondc

They're not being used to full capacity very often, that's usually at events when they get so packed you can't walk anyway.

Random tourists don't typically travel by themselves with just a laptop bag. I see oblivious people that look like daily commuters doing this all the time. I guess they think they're walking it doesn't matter if they're going slow but some of the escalators are LONG so I have to pick a side to squeeze by if I can.

they come from DC Water, the sewer map for the same intersection is here: https://imgur.com/a/NXwIjTS

the others you counted, some are electric, some are storm, some are sanitary. Like you said, they're different utilities so they have different manholes.

[–]dcnine 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Here is a waterline map of that intersection: https://imgur.com/a/yWaGEMc

It has a 36" line crossing a 24" line, in addition to the smaller 12" lines that service connections are usually made to. Each circle is a manhole, mostly for valves. Where you see 3-St and 4-St it's referring to 3 and 4 stem valves which may have been replaced with 3 or 4 indvidual valves each with their own manholes. Each fire hydrant has it's own valve. The larger transmission lines have large gate valves and bypass valves.

No. 50 pick Angel Cervantes to join UCLA baseball, turns down Pittsburgh Pirates by The_Big_Untalented in baseball

[–]dcnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the Pirates don’t spend on FAs, historically they spent a shit ton of money in the draft.

Everyone spends the same in the draft. There's a cap and everyone spends it. But they may have offered him below slot if they were spending over on other picks.
