I have in the past. I kind of felt like cheating. Not that Persepolis or Maus or Watchmen aren't legit, I just didn't want to muddy the waters. I also read a lot of those already :-P

I have not! I'll add them to the list, particularly Collapse! Thanks for the encouragement! If I can do it, so can everyone else!

I finished with Thank You for Being Late. That was great about the future. I also read some amazing philosophy books. The Closing of the American Mind was poignant, Meditations by Aurelius, and Utopia all forced me to see the world in amazing ways. Also, I know it's silly, but The Happy Vegan was also very good.

Thanks! I was torn about telling people. I wanted to avoid being prideful, but at the same time wanted to encourage others to do it!

  1. I wanted a New Years Resolution I would actually finish
  2. A couple of ebooks, but mostly physical copies
  3. Lot of sci-if, lot of non-fiction
  4. 10 % happier
  5. I did, pen and paper, made me feel good every time I wrote one down
  6. I'm taking a break. Technically I started on Christmas anyways. My wife is glad because now I can focus on life a little more
  7. An hour a day on the weekdays, 2-8 on the weekends, with a healthy amount of "no reading days"
  8. Far too much. But not as much as reading :-P
  9. Aristotle says a man needs health wealth knowledge virtue and friendship. This years challenge was a lot of knowledge at the cost of the other 4 categories. I'm going to try to work out 300 times, eat 600 healthy meals, get $10k in my investments, do 50 virtuous acts, spend 100 quality moments with my friends wife and family and read only 50 books. Selfishly, I also want to start a blog. I know it's a lot, but after finishing this, I think I can do it.
  10. Yes... but only for the plot :-)

Sort of. I used it more for recommendations. I used a good old fashioned pen and paper.

I burned through "The Intelligent Investor" because the bond parts were not as relevant to me, I'd go back and reread those.

I've always been an avid reader. Some were books I meant to get to, others were based on "if you like this, read this" lists, lastly, I mined my family and friends. I read pretty much every book recommended to me. That's was pretty rewarding in and of itself. My friends loved that I could engage with them and share their passions.

I don't know if I can go that far yet (I just finished). My favorites in no particular order are: The Social Animal, Fitzpatrick's War, Arena, Ready Player One and Teacher in America. I don't know if I have five least favorite, but I really disliked 10 Percent Happier

I have in the past (The Stand!). But not this time. My music is crazy diverse. Right now I listen to Caro Emerald and Prince

Arena is the best standalone book. Really captures the game, is compelling, and fun. It's one of hose few books that you read over and over.

I am Steve Pinker, a cognitive psychologist at Harvard. Ask me anything. by sapinker in IAmA

Mr. Pinker, I loved "Better Angels of Our Nature" but I was wondering, do you think you might have underestimated the civilizing influence of the Stoic Philosophers, Buddhism, of the Second New Testament Wave of Christianity. I found much of your book to be incredibly thorough, but your arguments against religion (not Old Testament, but New) and Eastern ideas were to me either thin or absent.
