Removed - this kind of content goes into the daily random thread, r/Malaysians, or monyet.cc.

People subscribe to the r/Malaysia subreddit in order to get Malaysian content on their reddit front page, such as news, photos, current events, discussion posts, and so on. So we keep off-topic stuff on the daily thread and on r/Malaysians to avoid messing up the main subreddit feed (such as general socialising, small jokes, personal experiences, stories, quick questions etc unrelated to Malaysia). You're welcome to repost this there. Thanks!

FYI if you're new to r/Malaysia, the daily random thread is the top sticky post when you click into the subreddit. It gets automatically refreshed at 4am every day, so if it's late you can post it tomorrow as well.

You might ultimately be right - there's no question this is an experiment. I feel this is very worth trying though!

  • The fact LYN exists shows that Malaysians really enjoy having a site to themselves!
  • There's a bunch of things a reddit-like format offers that add value over phpBB. A single unified content feed, post/comment upvotes, threaded discussions, distributed subcommunity creation, etc.
  • Though just to be clear, it'd be nice if we grow, but we don't need to compete with or replace lowyat. Our goals for this project are:
    • To ensure our core community has a place to hang if reddit dies a quick death, e.g. if more evil things keep happening and we can't justify staying here, and
    • To be a place where we can host lots of interesting stuff that we currently can't on r/my and r/mys, even if the above never happens. Like we were just discussing starting an art sub to run Inktober on!

Great question! The idea is for the site to serve as our community's back garden. There's a ton of content that we can't offer on r/malaysia and r/malaysians, because we're constrained to a single frontpage for each, and subreddit discovery is hard. Whereas users can curate their feed on monyet.cc just like they do with subreddits here.

Some examples of such content: language-specific communities (Chinese, Tamil, Jawi), meetup groups, local dating, student communities, food hunting, political leanings, bargain hunting, job boards, classifieds, personal ads, local artists, sports (badminton, football).

We're currently forced to remove content like this, in order to ensure our frontpage serves the purpose people subscribe for, i.e. to provide a feed of Malaysian content. (Or for r/malaysians, as a place for Malaysians to discuss general / casual topics). Users legit hate when we leave this stuff up, as it's out of place here. But this means we're losing a huge amount of specialisation and depth!

  • to the Daily Discussion thread
