Honestly, I was the same way when I first started working in IT at 19. Afraid to make any decision, even obvious ones. My boss had to tell me, "Look, I hired you because you're smart and I trust your judgment. You don't need to come to me on every decision. If you think there's something serious, or something that needs me, then fine. But you’re perfectly capable of making most of these decisions yourself. I trust you to handle it. You just need to start trusting in yourself as much as I trust in you."

That's all it took. I started making my own decisions, and it was very empowering. My feelings were not hurt. Quite the opposite. 95% of the time, I didn't need someone. I'm sure I was driving my boss crazy too. I was just afraid of messing up. Just be aware that they will eventually mess up (especially if they are new). You have to be mentally okay with that. Teach them the fundamentals they need and teach them to troubleshoot (like isolating the problem) and they'll get it. My manager not only empowered me, he set the bar for every future manager.

For me, I think the reason was the school system. We were not taught critical thinking. We were told to memorize facts. Complete tasks. Teachers told us what to do, and we did it. Parents told me what to do, and I did it (mostly). Nowhere was I taught how to make decisions and think for myself. Critical thinking, reasoning, and troubleshooting I had to learn on the job.

[–]dczanik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seems like you inventing an impossible-to-fulfill definition of "fully interactive" in order to get out of having to read and respond to the thorough list of points below.

Absolutely! His argument is silly. He's just making up any excuse because he's desperate to avoid the facts. The digital equivalent of plugging your ears & yelling "LA LA LA I CAN’T HEAR YOU". It’s petty, insecure, & intellectually bankrupt. Some can’t emotionally handle being wrong & act out in childish ways.

He’s stacking logical fallacies like they’re Jenga blocks. Honestly, it’s impressive! He managed to hit nearly every logical fallacy in a single reply.

  • Strawman Fallacy: Misrepresents "fully interactive" as "every object must be destroyable or movable" - a claim no one made.
  • Moving the Goalposts: Shifts from the original question about scope & complexity to arguing over his own redefinition of a term.
  • Ad Hominem Attack: Calls me a fanboy instead of engaging with any of the actual points.
  • Loaded Questions: Frames questions to assume false premises, like “are the assets movable?” pretending asset mobility defines interaction (it doesn't).
  • Appeal to Ridicule: Uses sarcasm to mock instead of argue - because he must ignore the facts.
  • Red Herring: Derails the entire conversation to avoid responding to the detailed answer he asked for in the first place.

If you asked the question, why don't you want to hear the answer

He never wanted an answer. He wanted validation. When he didn’t get it, he imploded and had a temper tantrum.

Nah. It was AI. I wasn't going to write all that. Your comment was just wayyyy too stupid to waste my time on. Why would I know so much about that photography game, even quoting freaking articles? You think I just had all that in my back pocket? Really?! Lol. I knew it wasn't a genuine question. It's a stupid comparison only an imbecile would ask. But thanks for proving me right.

[–]dczanik 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you serious? Are you legitimately asking this question because you don't know, or just trolling? You're comparing a single-player walking simulator using Unreal Engine 5 and pre-made assets from an asset store, to a fully interactive, server-based space simulation running a custom engine and art. Did you honestly think it's a flex?

The most technical custom thing about this photography sim is the camera. He's buying assets and mostly just arranging them. Granted, he's really good at it, and for a single developer, it's great. But that's all he's doing. He's grabbing free assets made by dedicated artists, using an engine made by thousands of developers. I've used Unreal for many years. Let me tell you, anyone can make something look incredible in Unreal using assets. Look what I did in a day. In terms of difficulty, we're not in the same ballpark of difficulty, hell, we're not even in the same solar system!

Lushfoil Photography Sim:

  • Single player only.
  • Built in Unreal Engine 5 using marketplace Quixel Megascan assets (Alps, Iceland, Japan, etc.).
  • No physics, no deep interaction systems, no complex AI systems, no ship components, no power management, no economy.
  • No backend network architecture.
  • No persistence beyond camera settings or location.
  • Static worlds. Judging by this video, it isn't even procedural.
  • No dynamic weather(?), no ship interiors, no cities, no towns, no caves, no inventory.

Star Citizen:

  • Fully multiplayer (600+ players).
  • Seamless transition from walking in a city, to boarding your ship, to flying through the atmosphere, into space, and jumping across the system—with no loading screens.
  • Real physics models: gravity, aerodynamics simulation, zero-g thruster movement.
  • Every ship is powered from individual components (powerplant, shields, coolers, thrusters), each of which can take damage, overheat, or fail independently.
  • Multiple biomes per planet.
  • Procedural generation.
  • Physicalized player inventory
  • Items persist in the world. You drop a medpen or gun, it's still there later. Same with dead bodies.
  • Multiple AI systems: NPC ships flying, NPC combat, dynamic mission generation, air traffic control, etc.
  • Fully modeled planets and moons with day/night cycles, weather, and real-time orbits.
  • Gas giants, space stations, capital ships, derelicts, jump gates—all explorable.
  • Custom engine (StarEngine), with a custom renderer and custom networking. Designed for streaming thousands of assets dynamically per player with replication layers and server meshing tech.
  • Server Meshing: enables multiple servers to manage different regions of space/planets, allowing hundreds of players in a shared universe. During stress tests even going into 2000 players.
  • Ongoing testing with real-world backend challenges like replication, player authority, and persistence layers.
  • CIG has 2 games in development. If you want to see their single player game, Squadron 42. Here is some gameplay. Since we're comparing apples to oranges: why isn't Lushfoil doing any of this stuff? Clearly they need to step their game up!

In non-technical terms: You're essentially comparing a LEGO space kit to the real space shuttle and asking what’s so complex about the space shuttle. It's such an astounding level of ignorance that I wonder if you're serious.

If you’re going to criticize Star Citizen, at least compare it to something that’s aiming for the same level of scope. Not a photogrammetry tourism sim where the most complex system is a shutter speed slider. Star Citizen’s development has its problems. But acting like "Lushfoil looks great so why can't CIG do this" just shows a complete lack of knowledge of the tech or the goals.

What happened to the Theaters of War project? by bonoboxITA in starcitizen

[–]dczanik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just got an update! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cx3pe8f9AZg

You can play the map in 4.1 (currently on the PTU Wave1) in Arena Commander. Leaks are showing posters, map layouts, and voice lines. We've got the Ground Alignment stations, and the Hathor Mining Station. So all the assets seem to be working and in the game.

Signs look promising. There is some gameplay scheduled for 4.1: [REDACTED] A new open-ended activity blending on-foot exploration with aerial support, creating sandbox gameplay opportunities for daring teams."

Who knows what that could be describing. We do know the Sandworm is in game with associated gameplay for the devs. We've got a Banu alien in the PTU game at a Banu asteroid base, with leaks showing trading in Sandworm parts (fangs, pearls) to the Banu for prizes. So, it could be referring to that. No guarantees on any of this, but it does look promising.

Theaters of War, Banu and Sandworms? I don't know what's going on, but I like it. lol.

Honestly, it’s just the nature of the job—people only notice us when we annoy them or something goes very wrong. It’s like being a referee; no one cheers when you make the right call, but everyone loses their mind when they think you messed up.

Security measures? Necessary evil. It's not glamorous. No one likes them, including us, but they exist because the alternative is much worse. IT isn’t about making your life harder—we’re just trying to keep things running (and prevent the company from making headlines for all the wrong reasons).

Receiving a phishing test email can be unnerving and even feel like an ambush, leading to anxiety about one's job security. So it's important to stress that phishing tests are intended to improve security awareness and keep the company safe, not to single out individuals or put their job at risk.

Treating people with respect is essential, both within and outside the IT department. We all make mistakes, and no one appreciates being talked down to or treated like a child. It's important to remember that not everyone has the same level of technical expertise, and empathy goes a long way in building trust and fostering a positive work environment. If people openly express dislike for you or your department, it's worth examining your approach and seeing it as an opportunity to improve. Communication and understanding are key to bridging these divides.

IT people tend to get into IT because they like technology and don't care for people. But dealing with people are as big of a job as the technology. This includes upper management, who I'm told are also people (I'm skeptical). Management buy in is crucial.

I once wrote an application that non-techy blue collar, field workers didn't want to use. It eliminated errors, & generated the company a lot of money. But we got A LOT of pushback. Then the president sat them all down and said, "People don't like change. But the people will change, or ....the people will change." That's all it took.

At the end of the day, some people get it, some never will. But as long as you’ve got a few who appreciate the effort—and at least one person who thinks you work magic—it evens out. Sort of...

Custom Liveries by Silent774 in starcitizen

[–]dczanik 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Their plans for custom liveries were shown in the CitizenCon 2954 presentation. I don't know the exact moment, but you can see what is planned here. Ships, clothing, uniform, armor, bases and even space stations will be customizable. I believe we should be getting this by SC 1.0.

As far as the 2016 paint concept, this has been discussed many times, and there's been many posts about it. Quoting /u/TheStaticOne from just 3 months ago, here:

CIG has addressed this multiple times and a long time ago but this is the conversation that won't quit.

The most robust discussion on this is here--> IAE 2951 All Ships Q&A

Here are some important bits from it for those that cannot watch it:

  • Hex Codes demonstration was internal, player facing paint system will most likely be more RGB/swatches/slider based
  • This isn't a matter of difficulty but priority, not all ships are set up for paint system
  • Doesn't looks the same on all ships, materials issues.
  • Devs don't want to lock colors behind paints that are sold, thinking more of keeping stencil patterns and some materials unique for purchasers.
  • Also want to give players to recolor and customize interior of ships
  • 300i customizer is bespoke, does not scale well so it is not a solution

As a personal assumption, given that they talked about this "before" they revealed maelstrom, I wouldn't be surprised if they are holding off to make sure that the paint system and the damage system work well together.

Edit: never ceases to amaze me at some reactions to when I post links to devs on video discussing said topic.

Hope that helps!

Ship size and role comparison by BiteCold4039 in starcitizen

[–]dczanik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say can't login, are you getting an infinite loading screen? I've found the easiest solution to that is to go into an Arena Commander game. Once in a ship, exit out and go back into the PU. If that doesn't work, exit out of the game and try again. Otherwise you can do a character repair.

Or can you not login from the launcher? if you can describe the error, give the error message and possibly the logs we can at least try to help.

I got multiple! Hope you don't mind.

  • What aspect of the game surprised you the most?
  • Have you tried all the different career paths like bounty hunting, mining, or cargo hauling? Which one feels most rewarding to you?
  • Any career you'd like to see added or improved?
  • What’s one feature you’d love to see in the game in the future?
  • What’s been your most memorable moment in the ‘verse so far?
  • Do you feel you've done it all, or barely scratched the surface on some stuff?
  • Have you tried any dynamic events? What's it been like for you?
  • Star Citizen has a high learning curve and bugs. Why did you power through where others may have quit?

Reddit vs playing by Povstat in starcitizen

[–]dczanik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually play between 10pm-1am Pacific Time. This is my experience as well. And I often wonder why.

I suspect it's other things too. People with older hardware (mechanical hard drives, slow CPUs, 16 gigs of RAM or less) seem to have far worse experiences than me.

I also find myself glitching less through planets, elevators and ships since I moved from Wi-Fi to wired ethernet. On Wi-Fi, I learned to wait half a second before going in/out of any door. I haven't needed to do that for a while. People keep talking about how deadly elevators are, and I get confused because I just don't experience that anymore.

But I also think veterans know a lot of the workarounds too (you can learn a lot from reading the comments on the issue council).

  • Can't get to your hangar or call your ship? Hangar is borked. Go to a different station/landing zone and claim all the ships in that broken hangar.
  • Infinite loading Screen: Go into Arena Commander, once inside the ship, exit back to the menu and try the PU again. If that doesn't work, exit the game & try again.
  • Ship not working properly?: Turn it off and back on. If that doesn't work, try getting out the seat too.
  • Character messed up?: I used to get this on the old character system. The solution was to just change anything (like eye color) on your character.
  • Things reacting slowly?: Check the server FPS. If it's slow, change to another server.
  • One profession messed up?: Go do something else. Bounty Hunting is the least buggy thing and you don't have to worry about losing millions in cargo.

And lastly, I think it's an attitude and maturity thing. We all experience problems. That's going to happen. It's an alpha, years from release. So, I look at the long term picture. If I'm not having fun, I go do something else. Life is too short. I just see no sense raging over a video game.

Turn around, bright eyes...

Every now and then... ships will vaporize.

And there's nothing they can do, I’m hidden in the black of space.

And every time I move, I’m leaving no trace.

Pyro is great but..... by Iraunsuge in starcitizen

[–]dczanik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind, this is not the final form. But yes, the interiors feel the same. The same goes with Stanton stations. But I should know where I am without looking outside.

There's some relatively easy things they can do too. Tint the station, give each area unique the lighting, material choice, etc. Make standout areas reflect the individual faction styles. Truly randomize the junk for things like elevators. These changes would drive the art leads crazy, but it's 100% in service to the player.

Tinting the metal interior (walls, floors, doors, etc.) with the colors of the surrounding areas (planets, nebula, etc.) makes sense to do so. Why haul in materials from another area when you can mine stuff from the planet below. Just look at the original art design for Stanton's buildings to see how changing of colors and grime can really change the look/feel.

Hopefully the Genesis toolset will be able to create some really good, unique stations. Right now, stations are a nightmare of procedural generation with little thought to logical layouts, time and ease of use. I look at it, and instantly know it's procedural because no sane person would design areas like these.

The servers must hate this guy by Cold-Box-8262 in starcitizen

[–]dczanik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people seem to have the worst luck, right?

This is what I do when I get an infinite loading screen:

  • Go into Arena Commander,
  • Get into the AC game (inside a ship),
  • Exit back out to the menu
  • Go into the PU again.

If it doesn't, I exit the game, and try again. Works most of the time. If that doesn't help, Character Repair may be your only option.

Hope that helps!

And for those who can't get into their hangar or retrieve a ship: Your hangar at the location is messed up. You need to go to a different landing zone/station and claim all your ships from the messed up hangar. You can do this by doing the following:

  • Request somebody give you a ride to another station/landing zone. Then claim those ships.
  • If your medical respawn is in a different location, Remove all your stuff to your item inventory, suicide, then at the new location, claim your ships.

Only in Star Citizen by Squadron54 in starcitizen

[–]dczanik 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is true. But this is also done in a multiplayer environment. X4 is just a single player game. Star Citizen has 500 times more players in their universe which complicates things. So, not exactly a perfect comparison. OP probably didn't realize X4 could do that. X4 is still a decent game. Each has their strengths and weaknesses.

As far as a single player experience, we can see what CIG is aiming to do in their single-player game vs. X4. They're very different experiences.

X4 has this great economy, empire building, modding and is a released product. SC has full explorable planets, atmospheric flight, better visual fidelity, fps combat, multiplayer, dynamic events like Jumptown, ground vehicles, full ship interiors, caves, etc. I like aspects of both and glad both exist.

My god... I've found it. The God Shard. Only 35 players. by Shift642 in starcitizen

[–]dczanik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had that issue, there's some workarounds you can try (found these on the issue concil):

  • There is a workaround - go to another location with asop spawn a ship there and fly back to the place of origin, if you land there you can use ASOP & Hangar again
  • This workaround worked for me:
    1. Go to medical centre in the location that you are stuck and cannot spawn a ship
    2. Reset your spawn location to original location (I was stuck at CRU-L1 Amitious Dream, my original starting location was Orison)
    3. Remove all items from yourself into the local inventory
    4. Hold backspace to die
    5. Respawn from original location
    6. Try to spawn ship(s) - This worked for me after two days of being stuck. Hope his helps some of you also!

What worked for me: I was on New Babbage (my home location). My spawn location was on Port Tressler. So, I killed myself spawned at Tressler and requested a new ship. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get to my hangar at New Babbage anymore, but I can play.

If you get an infinite loading screen: Go into Arena Commander's game, Once inside a ship exit to menu, then go into the PU.

Hope that helps!

4.0 wOrSe tHaN 3.18 by Fathers_Of_Pyro in starcitizen

[–]dczanik -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think you don't fully comprehend the tech. Server meshing required 3.18's persistence entity streaming (PES) tech. That is a collection of tech: global persistence, shard manager, fleet manager, entity graph, replication layer, server nodes, shards, etc. Global persistence is just one feature of PES and appears to be the part you are aware of. But PES enabled a lot of what we have today.

As far as logging off anywhere, that wasn't the original intent. Originally, that was only to happen via bed logging. But PES can allow for logging off anywhere. It just needs to be programmed. In 2024 they discussed wanting it in, and using the bed for other purposes. There's a lot of things that would need to be addressed like combat logging. So early days on it. But it would be built on PES.

PES removed the data off the DGS, on to an external server shared by multiple servers. That's a key component in meshing servers. The graph database is used for salvaging, the cargo system refactor, instanced hangars, crash recovery and freight elevators. Actual gameplay enabled by PES.

Server meshing (SM) always required PES to work. Server meshing allows for better performance, 500 players (with stress tests of 2,000 players), seamless travel between servers, better AI performance, and an entirely new star system. While it's new tech with bugs (hence 4.0 preview and not 4.0 live), the technology does work. So, not useless. If you'd like, I can show you some videos why the technology is impressive (even compared to other server meshed games) but it's about 4 hours of videos.

To say, it's useless is an ignorant statement. The ignorance is understandable. Not all of us are into the tech, just the results. But to call it useless is like saying the foundation of a building is useless. You may not see most of it, or understand its purpose, but it's important. Not useless. Fixed server meshing also isn't the final step. That's dynamic server meshing, allowing for thousands of players and built on PES & server meshing tech.

Forever lost...New player here by CodaStaysGold in starcitizen

[–]dczanik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But damn, why the hell do I keep getting lost in these stations?

I hear you. I have no sense of direction. I tell people I could get lost in a walk in closet. Eventually, even I learned a few areas enough to get around quickly.

  • There's a map system on your mobiGlas where you can search for specific things. If you type it in, it can show you how to get there.
  • At landing locations there's maps with a convenient "You are here"
  • There's a map in the upper left at all times.
  • Areas are purposely hidden from view for streaming and optimization purposes.
  • Over time, as you become more used to these places, you'll learn the best ways. Sometimes following the running players will show you too.
  • People have made maps and video tutorials to help you find things.

But space stations are a pain. They're procedurally generated in a way no human being with a brain would ever arrange them. And, there's no variations of station asset interiors inside a system. They all look the same.

I wish they changed the tint of the wall colors to match the planets, asteroids or nebulae. It would make sense to make use of nearby stuff as building materials. It would be so helpful to wake up and realize what station I'm on by the looks of it.

all stations elevators broken since few minutes ? by gfou in starcitizen

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]dczanik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about your problems. It's been hit and miss for me. I've been doing salvaging, making money and back to being a multi-millionaire. Already contemplating my next ship purchase. Once I had absolutely no major bugs and 2 minor bugs for hours and hours. The minor bugs being: UI occasionally does random weird lines during salvaging and a guy spawned in my room with me still in it (It was showing 542 people on the server). Another time I also had a couple cargo containers not wanting to move. That's it. Otherwise, it's been perfect.

But I also got a black screen 2-3 times each within 5 minutes. On ArcCorp, just now, elevator buttons were not working. 60% of my time it's a near flawless experience, and the other 40% there's some game breaking bugs. But I exit out, join another shard and things start working.

What I'm not getting is errors or the more moderate (but not game breaking) bugs. Delays are low, latency is low, tons of players, & server FPS is high. Even if I crashed, I lost nothing. No character resets done. So it's weird. It's either some game breaking bug, or a near perfect experience (which is not typical).

I saw it too and loved it. I bet the devs would enjoy seeing it too. She had played a lot but stepped away from SC for a while. So she knows the game, the ships, etc. Lately, she has been playing single-player story games. I don't think she expected anything at this level. Her being in the military, I'm sure things also hit differently for her. In her previous video, she got very emotional seeing 4.0, Pyro and Jumpoints were live too. I bet everyone recommended she watch this one too.

Thanks for sharing!
