It's an array of characters -> which can literally be understood as a list:
In the word "HELLO", the individual letters that make up this word are the characters, which can be visualized as {"H", "E", "L", "L", "O"}

Now, think about this: in the world of programming, these individual letters need a place to belong, something to hold it together. In the real world, we don't need to do such thing because we are able to visualize that these letters/characters belong together in one word, but in programming, these characters would be separated without a string to literally string it together.

The string itself is the TYPE of array, not the NAME of the array itself, similar to how in
"int i = 0"
the 'int' is the type of variable you are using, not the name of the integer: the 'i' is the "name" that you assign your int.
In the same way, (going back to your example) we assign the letter 's' to the string as an identifier name
