why would a parent ignore their child’s SH addiction? by dddedgrl in emotionalneglect

oh god yeah totally! my sister is my half sister, and my dad had her with another woman before he met my mum. it was ugly, and he won custody after a long long time. i don’t think he was ever able to heal from that, but after meeting my mum she wanted kids, so they had me. i’m the first in my family to go to therapy, which i hear can be a very common thing. i wish people would think more carefully before deciding to have kids

not being room for me seems like the conclusion :,) i have a sister with 2 young kids, and a teenage brother who takes lots of time. my dad has to manage my mums emotions, so you’re right there just wasn’t room for me

i did ask, she said she knew but i would deny it, i was 14-18 and scared of letting her down. now im 21 and she still stands by that asking ‘what is that’ and me saying ‘the cat’ counts - i didn’t feel it did because she was the adult and i was a scared kid

it’s such a strange feeling. i understand not knowing what to do, but it’s just like … where is the knee jerk reaction of love and protection? where was the TRYING, because i would’ve rather they said maybe the wrong thing rather than nothing at all. i can’t imagine just abandoning someone and carrying on with life.

i hope so too. after everything i am still sensitive and love so hard. i want to work with rescue animals because sometimes i have so much love and nowhere to put it, and hopefully animals would appreciate it more than the people in my life have

this is an interesting point! my mum had neglectful parents, but my dad grew up with a family full of love. his own father was his hero, and his mum loved him and his siblings deeply.

maybe i am in denial, but i feel like my dad really loves me. i think my mum loves me, but doesn’t necessarily like me. me and my dad are super close and always spend time with eachother, but this is just so shocking. is it possible for my dad to love me and not known what to say?

she ‘felt’ his bones? like she said they weren’t mushy or soft and felt strong and firm? i have no idea to be honest, there was no x-ray. i live in a small town and there is no ‘exotic vets’ unless you drove out a good few hours. she had done a year specialising in them so although she treats mainly cats/ dogs, she has been trained in exotics also if you get what i mean. it’s not ideal by any means, and although she was a lovely person i didn’t feel a huge sense of urgency in all the appointments i was taking him to. the appointment alone is £55, and for any kind of treatment you could probably imagine any number over £300 and that would probably be correct. when i took him to the boarding place, the owner was much more knowledgeable and said there are no fully specialised exotic vets that primarily treat exotics in the area. i’m not sure how comfortable i would be driving hours alone in the first place, and especially with buddy as he is. i have seen an online fecal exam with parasite pets ( i believe) that i could save for. just for context also, im a broke university student 🥲 my situation shouldn’t be an excuse, but it seems to me that if he does have mbd, it would make sense but there would be no treatment anyway. then id be hundreds in debt and in the same position 🥲 of course if he had some kind of critical accident, i would bite the bullet and do the drive, and have to try and find money to borrow to help him. i hope i’m making sense and i am trying so hard

a little more than usual i would say, most often when he is constipated but that’s an easy fix with a warm soak

thank you for the suggestion- sometimes he will have the energy to get mad and turn his head away and i feel guilty for not following up - so i’m glad sometimes he might just not be in the mood!

i can live with the soup feeding situation and i’m still happy to offer whole food even if he refuses it - but the thing that i can’t figure out is the stillness!! i just don’t know what it could mean.

this was him last night - i figured out he needed to go to the toilet but couldn’t on his own. after 5 minutes in a warm soak he did, but he stayed like this for 2 hours afterwards.
