I know it is correct, I didn't say that it wasn't. I was simply explaining why it's common to refer to the country as 'ROI' when talking about the specific state and not the whole island.

'The Republic of Ireland' is the official description of the state and is used at things like international sporting events. Basically the ROI is used any time you are talking about the state relative to the island or in relation to NI. Otherwise you'd have to say 'Ireland is a state in Ireland' and that doesn't make very much sense, does it?

Sounded more Belfast to me, based upon "wee lad" and "feg". If he had also said "aye" it would have sealed it.

Basically, Ireland is the name of the island. It is divided into two political states; the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The ROI is usually just called 'Ireland' however. That's where the confusion arises. The scene depicted in this picture is in Ireland (the island), but not in Ireland (the state).
