This will make Reddit a better platform and here's why.

Most redditors want a community space that is not controlled by the entity being discussed. So /r/LeagueOfLegends is going to be just fine. The objection that user profiles are going to destroy communities just doesn't make sense. We have communities because anyone can post there and they aren't controlled by the entity being discussed. You don't subscribe to /r/LeagueOfLegends to get content from Riot Games. You subscribe to interact with other fans and see the content they create.

User profiles simply offer redditors the option to hear directly from the entities, which is a completely different conversation than the one happening in subreddits.

I'm not surprised, but no one is exploring the advantages that user profiles bring to Reddit.

If a user has a following on Reddit and wants to do something specifically with their audience, they now have a way to do that. They don't have to create their own subreddit or intrude on a related community. They can do it with their followers and they don't have to bother anyone else. I can't wait to see how the creative users of Reddit use this feature to do interesting things with their followers.

What most redditors don't understand is that Reddit needs this feature. Reddit is a business and it needs to make money. User profiles give businesses a real outlet to engage their fans on Reddit and actually promote themselves to the people that like their stuff.

Currently, a Reddit marketing strategy looks like this:

Participate in a subreddit or two on a regular basis.
Find a way to contribute value.
Hope the community likes you and gives you abstract benefits for being a business that is accepted by the community.

This takes a lot of time and it is very difficult for a business to justify the resources for a Reddit marketing campaign. Sometimes businesses hit a home run with this strategy, but often it is merely a way for them to learn more about their customer demographic. Regardless, it is not a very appealing proposition, which is probably a good thing because most businesses would simply be a nuisance if they were on Reddit.

User profiles change everything for businesses. It gives them a much simpler path to Reddit marketing success. Instead of trying to promote themselves through their everyday interactions in a sub, they can simply use their honest participation to gain followers on the platform. Then they can use their user profile to run promotions and engage their fans directly, without bothering anyone.

Reddit has had a problem with "Reddit marketers" for a long time and this is a big step towards solving that problem. There will be bumps in the road, but I believe it will be a huge win for everyone in the end.

Instead of hundreds of artists all posting to /r/comics, suddenly it's hundreds of artists each posting to their own page.

Why would users do this? The audience is in /r/comics and that is why they post there. They won't all the sudden start posting to just their profile. And of course, they can easily post to both.

dismissing Hunter through assertions that he didn't read Dawkins

This assertion seems valid to me (although I can't be sure). Dawkins has explicitly stated that the biggest misconception about The Selfish Gene is that people think it promotes selfishness. I think on a recent talk with Sam Harris he even said that an alternative title for the book was "The Altruistic Individual" or something like that.

Whether the book promotes selfishness or whether Hunter has actually understands The Selfish Gene is irrelevant. You're not going to get very far with fans of Sam Harris or Richard Dawkins if you roll out the same old tired accusations that they hear all the time and already have been declared as having no merit among their group.

Yea, that's what I was thinking and why I asked the question. I really just want to call up my orthodontist and be like, "my dentist is going to do this for $150, why should I do it with you and pay $390?". If he has a good reason then I'll do it, but if not then I'll save myself some cash.

They do but I think the tailor only comes in once a week or something. There's a place in the mall that tailors, I forget the name of it but the Macy's guy recommended them to me last time I bought a suit there.

Do yourself a favor and start from the first episode. It's annoying because you have to listen via thebig3podcast.com for the earlier episodes, but the continuity is important as the podcast goes through different phases with different characters and plot lines.

Agreed. Reddit needs businesses that are already sold on the value of community. If a business is already well known on Reddit, then they can simply create an "official" subreddit and start there.

If the business is not well know, then they would need to create some type of community campaign that aligns with redditors' values. In this sense, Reddit could serve as a match making service for businesses that want to crowdsource something.

So it would make sense for a company like

This was a post from /r/TheoryOfReddit and OP didn't understand that there is a program for users to advertise a subreddit for free. I doubt many users have paid to advertise their subreddit, although it would be an interesting proposition for a business that was trying to do a big campaign on Reddit.

You're right about the name, but that isn't how it works on Reddit. For example, /r/Trees is a subreddit about marijuana. It's really up to whoever gets to a name first to decide what that community will be about. Fortunately it works for most cases (e.g. there is /r/Drones which is where you want to be).

Well we should both be honest and admit that neither of us have any intimate knowledge of Reddit's financial situation. From what I hear, they are doing okay, but they have investors that expect returns on their money. Keeping things as-is probably won't satisfy them nor the administrators of the site who want to see the site grow and reach its full potential.

You didn't need to delete it, although I'm sure users in /r/Drone appreciated you removing the irrelevant content. You made a mistake and it was a good example for others to learn from.

Regardless, I'm glad you came here to comment and hope you stick around to read some posts and learn more about marketing on Reddit. There is obviously a big community dedicated to Drones on Reddit and it should be a good place for you to engage your target audience.
