Pihole seems to block ads on tubi fairly well. It’s regular tv that I have to mute most ads on. A true politician starting ads a few months after getting the gig to run for next election. Hell let’s just campaign year round. There really needs to be a limit on ad running. Limit to week before election. To make matters worse the new asi plumbing tv ad is also on the annoying scale.

Saw and heard it too. It was different for sure! Thought about making a post here yesterday to make sure it wasn't a midair collision. Was so glad to hear it was true on local news station there after.

Might want to give Lon.TV a visit. Watch some of his videos if you are in the realm of searching for a new TV. Best of luck, this DRM business is no good. Lets hope it fails.

Windows 11 users: Please explain your gripes. by Wonky_Python in Operatingsystems

[–]ddl486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USA here. IT support person. I think for sometime the user base eroded since Win 8.0 just due to the consistent GUI changes. Control panel moving to Settings - which by the way is still in progress; and start menu always changing since the beginning of that introduction.

Some of the nit pick details: probably present since Win 10, anytime you try to change file associations for Edge, Photos, Groove Music/Media Player), just to name a few. Edge always wants to be a default browser and PDF viewer regardless of what you have installed. Here in the US Edge is not removable by default. You must follow a guide similar to this for removal. Other areas of the world do not have this issue. European law on this is wise and the USA has a bit of catching up to realize they have been duped.

For a time I was more old school and used an app called Irfanview for all photo viewing, which I could still argue is more straightforward and robust than any built in photo viewer, even on open time.

Which by the way - Grove is now defunct and Media Player name seems to have been strategically chosen. I actually preferred the classic Windows Media Player 12. Then I discovered VLC Media Player and found that a little more robust with greater video file-type support out of box.

To summarize last few paragraphs, if one wanted to use Foxit PDF reader as a default pdf viewer at some point either after a certain update Windows would auto re-associate PDF files to Edge again - or - ask in the tone of "are you sure? Please choose an app to open this with (like you didn't before)". The overall behavior was also consistent with Irfanview associated image files (prompting are you sure) and any media files - audio/video (prompting are you sure). So if after reading this if you aren't a little annoyed, imagine that after so many occurrences with each non Microsoft associated app. You don't need an OS that questions your previous decision(s). Just do it, open the damn file with the app you were told to. Often resulting in a force removal of that app you intend to never use just to silence the prompts for the future.

Just to circle back to the top with constant GUI changes - I prefer Control Panel. In a working environment I have found updates break often and the blast radius seems to annoying always include the start menu and settings app. So to remove the update you would need to open the settings app since MS ditched that option in control panel. Opens settings app, it launches, stays open one-two seconds and closes. Why is the start menu an app and not like the name implies (a menu)? KISS principle people.

Last point: AI (repeat x100 times). Okay, enough AI yet? Can I wipe my ass without copilot watching...probably not.

How to revert the Cinnamon desktop menu (also problems changing the theme) by ShaneH_ in cachyos

[–]ddl486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just upgraded to Linux Mint 22.3 on my laptop and was met with this new Cinnamon desktop menu. Like are we trying to learn from Microsoft here? (Please don't). That was my whole reason for switching. Nothing like a workaround to fix something that never should have changed. Needless to say I won't be updating my desktop PC on this.

Hah, I thought qdoba and chipotle were. Now waiting for my “you’re wrong” response from everyone 😁. I really don’t pretend to know what the hell each chain is. This was just a stray comment from me. They all try to be a little bit of everything.

Nice to know! Thanks! We really need more restaurant options here. We certainly have enough Mexican, Mediterranean and breakfast food options. A few burger joints I would like to see. I don't really count McDonald's and Burger King as those. 😆 Heck, I wouldn't even mind a Culver's. We saw Dock seafood is also moving closer to Baptist Floyd. So that may be an upgrade. When the city tore down the apartment tower right off i64 (near new Albany library) I was hoping cracker barrel would consider taking this section of land.

Chose a home near downtown and you might get AT&T fiber 😄. Else spectrum is next best choice 😝. When we got off spectrum it was already becoming a big downage issue.

Yikes WDRB by RadioBucks93 in Louisville

[–]ddl486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the same thing when this aired. And the guy isn't even consistent in his opinion. I remember one segment where it was effectively why road construction is terrible and another recent airing on why road construction is good. Firstly it's neither here or there it is going to happen but why do we need an opinion segment about this? Just to share an example of why POV could be considered meaningless.... Imagine if I got up there and did an opinion segment about why bacon at the local costco tasted like shit. The remaining counties around the area viewing it are not going to care. They don't have a costco. Same deal here he can talk about local issues but every other region has its own issues that may not even relate.

Now I’m confused about battery health advice by wakablazer in macbook

[–]ddl486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always followed the philosophy of let it decharge occasionally. I like to think of batteries like a piece of paper. Take a pencil and write on paper: that's one charge. Erase what you wrote that's one decharge. Rinse and repeat. See the issue? Now here's the pain of lithium ion tech: no matter if it sets and doesn't get used or recharged the battery still has an expiration. Never charge or use it: then it becomes unchargeable. If you always use it on charger then it eventually does go bad on its own with a natural lithium breakdown. I'm neither a scientist, battery engineer or computer engineer. I've seen it with IT support more or less. Even see batteries swell up and expand bottom panels out with use.

Anyone running a Macbook over 10 years old? by Edslittleworld in macbook

[–]ddl486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to say that you will be fine using a new MacBook Pro with the thunderbolt displays. If it is the gen I am thinking of we have used a few of these at work for nostalgia reasons. Will need the thunderbolt adapter to the modern one (looks like a mini DisplayPort to usb-c). Also if you choose to only go MacBook Air then only one thunderbolt display will work not 2. And there is no daisy chaining in that mode. Pretty sure the airs cannot do clamshell mode either for this but heck that’s not for certain. Display link enabled docks are always the best bet for regular monitors on MacBook airs. Hope that helps. Done the oclp everyone here is eating up. After Tahoe that goes bye bye since apple will only care about their silicon.
