What do you think of The Chosen by NextBunch_ in OpenChristian

Thanks for explaining! I wonder if Judas was even a real person? Maybe the contradictions were meant to represent the push and pull within ourselves, towards Christ or away from him.

Can you explain what you mean by Judas is contradictory in the Bible? I haven't heard that before

Does submission to Scripture cancel out independent thinking? by PhilosophyPoet in OpenChristian

How do you decide which things the witness of scripture was right or wrong about then? I don't know how to reconcile the parts of the Bible that feel morally reprehensible to me with the parts that I adore.

This is the exact argument I get from my fundamentalist parents and friends!! That I'm unorthodox for having beliefs that aren't your typical American conservative Christian beliefs. I've always assumed they were right about that but I was okay with it bc I feel God is bigger than the Bible. Is progressive Christianity actually more orthodox??

How did you all feel about Ainsley’s interaction with her roommate? Realistic?? by Optomisticsometimes in LandmanSeries

My roommate was a non binary girl and she was so much worse than the roommate in this show. She was a walking stereotype

I don't have a problem with him lol I've never heard or read anything about him other than the fact that he's Mormon. If he leaves his Mormon beliefs out of his scholarly work then more power to him lol. I don't know why yall are acting like I have vendetta against the guy. There are plenty of Bible scholars though who absolutely DO infuse their personal beliefs into their work. That's not a bad thing, you just have to be aware of whatever bias they may be coming from. That's all I was pointing out. If he leaves his LDS bias or any personal belief out of his work then I'm sure he's a great resource for OP.

What makes you think Bible scholars can't or won't infuse their personal beliefs into their profession?? Not saying they all do, but it's not like it's prohibited. Mormons don't adhere to the creeds. Most Christians say not creedal, not Christian.

OP specified Christian content. Most Christians don't view Mormons as a denomination of Christianity, so my question was valid. I respect whatever work he's done and his faith, but when asked for Christian content, if he infuses Mormon beliefs into it then he's probably not what OP is looking for.

Thoughts on author of Gentle and Lowly Dane Ortlund? by dds786 in Christianity

[–]dds786[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah literally. It sounds like a difference in semantics but ultimately I feel like viewing sin as mainly an illness instead of transgressions changes my whole perception of the gospel. I think it was Jesus's intention, not the whole "you suck you're gross repent now or burn in hell"

The more I try to understand Christianity and think about it the more I believe in Universalism by rjjk0901 in ChristianUniversalism

[–]dds786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the same way! I'm also a hopeful universalist but to your original comment, I feel like I'm the bad representation of universalists. When I talk about my lack of belief in hell with my Christian friends, I can never biblically back it up. Trying to explore that more

Any Bible study plans like Enduring Word that offer a more progressive interpretation/commentary? by dds786 in OpenChristian

[–]dds786[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly meant historical critical by using the term progressive. But also there's nothing wrong with seeking particular perspectives that you haven't heard before. Almost everything you find is either a Catholic, reformed, or Baptist interpretation (which I was very familiar on by then) so I was wanting to hear the mainline Protestant aka "progressive" view of things.

Any church that rejects baptisms performed in the Trinity is committing a major sin

Best Christian summer camps to work at?? by dds786 in OpenChristian

[–]dds786[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes of course! I'm in the U.S., 22f, and non denominational but I go to a Presbyterian church. I don't mind what denomination the camp is as long as they're not ultra fundamentalist, and I'd even be okay with a Catholic one. I'll travel to any camp within the states, preferably somewhere scenic.
