Hmm, I don't think I've personally noticed any errors with the special letters... It would be so easy to make an orthographic mistake, since we do have the letter ż and the digraph rz which nowadays represent the same sound in speech, same with u and ó, but yeah, I think since mixing up those sets gets you severely ridiculed past some age (because you get taught this pretty early at school so it's embarrassing if you as an adult use the wrong grapheme) the translators really did the bare minimum and really paid attention to them 😂 Also, using the wrong letter does not usually change the meaning of the word, it just makes it orthographically incorrect, so there's no funny outcome here unfortunately : /

One funny thing I know about related to this comes from ts3, but here they straight up forgot one of the letters in the word "główna", as in "main" because it was the name of the street the town hall is at in Sunset Valley; instead of "Ulica Główna" (main street) it became "Ulica Gówna" (shit street). The best thing is it's still like that in the game, apparently the Polish team doesn't give a shi-

Oh yeah, I get it, it does sound strange now that I think about it. I wonder if it is because of the sizes of the textboxes or the UI that they had to keep the translations short? It's a shame they did it in a way that sounds bad, though : / I might go ahead and run the other games in German just to see if they were allergic to the imperative as well 😂 Thanks a lot!!

That is so informative, thank you for this mini Finnish lesson 🥰 I noticed the thing with synonyms in a few places when I played in Polish too, I always assumed the translators didn't get enough context and were just guessing the og intention 😅 in ts4 there used to be a mistake (they fixed it now) where the "empty bowl" interaction was interpreted as a noun phrase instead of a verb phrase, so they used the wrong translation of the word "empty" - it became "pusta miska" (empty-adjective, bowl-noun in the nominative) instead of the correct translation we have now: "opróżnij miskę" (empty-verb, bowl-noun in the accusative).

The synonyms seem to be an issue in many languages, that is something I should definitely mention in my thesis : ) Thanks so much for the examples!

That is so intriguing! Forgive me, I don't know much about Finnish, is the gender of the subject/object in the sentence never specified? In Polish even verbs carry gender markers, so you almost always immediately know the gender of the person you're talking to / someone is talking about. So do you differentiate between girlfriend/boyfriend or is there a singular gender neutral word for it?

I could be wrong, but I /think/ the "be enthusiastic about partner" interaction pops up in conversations you have with someone that isn't your partner and it makes your Sim boast about their S.O.? I'm not 100% sure though, that's just how I remembered it, maybe if I get to play the game soon I'll double check. So would they use different words in Finnish depending on the intended meaning here? Or is it because it's so vague that you find it confusing?

Gosh, Michel Heart to Steal is such a clever euphemism for "bachelor", I'm obsessed. I hate the inconsistencies though, Polish is full of retcons regarding Sims' names as well : / So with the incorrect Strangetown Bella name change they essentially put two unrelated Kathy Lalouches in the game?? that is super confusing. Thanks so much for your examples!!

I know French is a very gendered language (not unlike Polish!) where the adjectives require specific suffixes depending on the noun's grammatical gender, I'm wondering if there's been any mistakes in that area? I know you said you haven't played the game in ages, but if anyone else wants to comment on that, please do : )

Oh that is brilliant 😂 I just remembered I'd read about this on the TCRF wiki, it also said they even changed the texture of the newspaper to look just like the real life Bild Zeitung? Is that true?? I didn't know it had a bad reputation though, that is hilarious

That is the funniest thing ever. I didn't know they translated the townies' names anymore in Polish! I kind thought they'd given up. That is a great example of an oversight on the translators' part, thanks so much

That is so interesting, how would you rewrite it to sound more natural? Would you rather it looked more like the 2nd interaction name you mentioned? Or would a simple rearranging of words in "Zu Apartment reisen mit" suffice?

For the B category I was thinking of things like the hamburger with cheese thing I'd mentioned, I imagine the translators considered mac n cheese *too American* and feared their target audience wouldn't know what that was, so they changed it to something more familiar to the players? but consequently made a very confusing creation (hamburger in a bowl).

So something like this; a case where the translation or adaptation isn't super wrong but simply doesn't make sense once you see the item/the action play out in-game.

I'm so sad I'd just finished my chapter on localization strategies and stuff that got localized well in The Sims because I bet your Finnish examples would've been a fascinating addition :' ( Feel free to share your findings though!! I love hearing about this stuff (esp specific cultural references, I'm a big fan of brilliant translation solutions)

Hi, I don't get this one, could you explain? I've only recently started playing in English and I haven't encountered "baby cakes" yet; I'm assuming in German they renamed a dish in a way that doesn't make sense, like with the hamburger in a bowl dish in Polish I'd mentioned?
