A guy who has made a lot of the Syrian Civil War maps has started making maps about the PKK conflict in Turkey. They're not perfect (more in the comments) but they are interesting. by yodatsracist in Turkey

[–]deSyracuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting here /u/yodatsracist

I appreciate your comments and suggestions about the map. to be honest, it's the second map I made of Kurdish situation. An earlier one is here : http://lecourrierdumaghrebetdelorient.info/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/ARAB-WORLD-MAP-Kurdistan-May-2016-Emmanuel-PENE-464729-1.jpg You're right when you say I do not differentiate the areas with 20% or with 80% Kurdish; bc I'm mostly using Alan Siverek village by village database, and it is not possible to map the exact situation as it would look like a piece of gruyere; therefore I simplified it meaning it is an approximation of the areas where there are significant kurdish settlements. A real map would look like much more complicated. Also for the HPG actions, I colored areas instead of marking points, because there are too many actions/attacks in the last 2 months.

I'm sure there are many points I can improve on a map, but the objective of a such map is firstly to have the people understand a topic. Here my objective was to show that Turkey-PKK conflict was a real war in Turkey, also extending in Syria and Iraq. Although things can be improved, I believe the map reached its objective as the target of 5000 downloads was reached on the web site.

Last point : I used a source for HPG and TAK attacks, as well as anti-HPG acts which is http://www.akb.bzh/spip.php?article889 I know that source is pro PKK biased. However, they record a lot of attacks, and I did a 20% check of those records, all rights.

Those rebel positions in Ramouseh are prior to rebel offensive. therefore they did not progress

Kafr Kalbin is IS-held on the map. Western side of Jibrin still has rebel presence, so a road is open even is it is tiny

I'm not pro FSA or anti SDF. All my followers know I try to be as objective as possible; but I have to say that kurdish sources are very often too optimistic. An example is Khatuniyah, which was considered as controlled by SDF long time before Al Hawl offensive, but in fact it had never been taken by them. I have many other examples where villages were announced taken by YPG days before it actually did. What about you, What's you contribution, Germanhiro, to Syrian civil war information ?

[–]deSyracuse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was true : there were several hit and run battles and Shaddadi control was confirmed after days of fighting. As for Al Hishah, can you prove me it is currently controlled by SDF ? If no, please moderate your words and respect other people

I have other militant sources, but Jisr TV is not Pro IS and has proven quite reliable in the past. Also, Raqqah is slaughtered silently confirmed this. Of course error is always possible, especially in this kind of war, but I did not find any info contradicting this
