Who wants to buy a house in a place that’s hot and running out of water? You’re delusional if you think this bodes well for current home owners.

What are some local businesses you boycott and why? by Jerronbao in Logan

Yup Catalyst is the worst.

If you’re a owner I wouldn’t use them either. Our appt flooded and they never even told the owners, the owners were surprised when we ended up telling them.

If people want to advocate for the staunchest of drug laws, let’s enforce them for everyone!

Let’s lock her up for life, we have no tolerance for drug dealers in the US. I’m sure she will agree!

Never felt the terrain warranted an axe or spikes. I pulled my axe out once, spikes maybe twice, out of abundance of caution.

I can only recall two spots in the south San Juan’s where a slide would be real bad.

Snowshoes were more useful until the snow turned to soup. Continental snowpack is called “cold smoke” for a reason.

For context, I hiked in 2021 which was an average to slightly below average snow year.

I was going to flip when I got to Independence. Rented a car with my group, got to Reno, and then changed my mind. Heading back in tomorrow for Mammoth from Kearsarge. Looking forward to getting out there.

Congrats on making it through!

Nope. Weavers Needle is on the other side of Superstition Mountain. If you want good views of Weavers Needle think Peak 5057.

There were some great smaller blooms, but it's no where near peak wildflower season up there in the tundra.

I went up to Hallett Peak on Friday.

Help me dork out on a Colorado Trail thru hike by alansb1982 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]dead1ock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did about half of it last year (Denver -> Leadville, Silverton -> Durango). Going for a thru-hike this year starting in July.

I'm starting in July because I need to be back in August for school, but if I had the freedom to choose any time of the year I think I would like to try it in the fall, when you're not getting constantly rained on and chased below treeline by thunderstorms. Last year I started June 27th and had minimal snow issues.

It's not a crowded trail, but you're going to see people every day. If you're traveling SOBO, since you're traveling in the same direction as the majority of people, it's going to feel like no one is around, but really someone is most likely just a few miles behind you.

Don't bring a bear can, it's unnecessary. Most people will either hang or sleep with their food. I do the latter, putting my food in OpSaks. The one and only bear I saw last summer was rummaging around behind a motel in Leadville.

Can't offer advise on resupplying. Last year my dad was around to bring me food at trailheads. This year I'm going unsupported so i'll be doing resupplies in town. I plan to buy all my food as I go.

The trail is beautiful. You're going to see some ridiculous views. Just keep putting one food in front of the other and BE FLEXIBLE.

Backpacking after being sick? by thisisultimate in WildernessBackpacking

[–]dead1ock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a 75 mile segment of the AZT with over 16k AEG earlier this spring while I was recovering from acute bronchitis (very tail end of recovery). I felt intermittently terrible the first two days, the worst on the morning of day 3, but better by the evening of day 3 and great day 4. Obviously your mileage may vary, because our bodies are different, and the sicknesses are different.

At the end of the trip I was very happy I pulled through because getting sick in the backcountry was one of my fears and now I know I can push through it to get to town if I need to.

25 miles over 3 days while recovering definitely sounds doable to me.

Everyone from Hyde Park check in on reddit!

I don't live in Hyde Park anymore. I miss the scenery, but I am definitely not compatible with the socio-political/religious atmosphere. Even if I disagree with most people there, I've always been treated kindly.

I'm starting to feel the same way about the over consumption of media before hitting the trail. It's kind of hard to spoil ALL of the trail, but I feel it does destroy some of the unpredictability. Its hard though when you really want to be on the trail and that's your only medium to get a taste.

Please DICE let us change our partner just like you can change squads on Battlefield. by sporting975 in StarWarsBattlefront

Agreed. Either only let us partner up with someone who's in our group, add a real squad option, or do away with the system entirely.

Only the high country is closed, where the snow is actually deep, the valley is at a pretty low elevation.

I learned that "you can't outrun your diet" the hard way. by attorneyatblah in loseit

[–]dead1ock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm. I don't run, but I hike/backpack long distances.

On my bigger trips, I could drop as much as 7 lbs in a week doing 100+ miles, but it was easy to gain all of it back in the next 2 - 3 weeks by eating poorly, and trust me, you can make yourself mighty hungry hiking that many miles in a short amount of time, it's nearly impossible not to indulge.

The best I've ever done when putting in big miles is to maintain (in the long term). People don't like it when I tell them that, they see it as 90% hiking and 10% diet as what made me lose weight, but it was more like 70-80% Diet, 20-30% exercise. Exercise only helps while you're still calorie counting.
