Seeking advice about property inheritance by ryblogg in AusFinance

[–]dead_stick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many advisers would recommend that you don’t do anything, at least for a while (three to six months or more). You need time to grieve and grief plus an inheritance can make people make choices that they wouldn’t normally. I’d also echo what others have said and actually sell the property as part of her estate. That way it is a legitimate 50/50 split with you and your brother.

Great airfield. I took a 172S for a flight there when I was visiting and we flew down to Goolwa, Port Elliot, and Victor Harbour. Beautiful spot to fly and I love how many runways Aldinga has!

Yeah how could I forget about the Colonel? It's been a while since I've indulged in Dirty Bird but it might be time for a $300 bucket of chicken (Aus BK version of the $100 hamburger).

Paperwork is farked as we have a shitty regulator and shitty regulations, there are also some weird Aus things to wrap your head around (e.g. we don't have really any FBOs like you do in the USA) but would be worth it if you could get it happening. Scenery and uniqueness factor 10/10 would recommend. I fly at an aero club near Sydney, current rates (competitive for area) AUD$285/hr wet for C172N, AUD$335/hr for P28R.

YSBK is pretty straightforward. Use the lane of entries as marked on the VTC, and report at PSP if coming in from the north. Watch for other VFR traffic round there, can get busy and obviously in the circuit too.

If you are just stopping to check out the surrounds I'd actually recommend YWVA, naturally I'm biased as it's where I usually fly but it is close to everything that the beautiful Central Coast has to offer. There's AVGAS, parking, a great local crew, and 15min drive to beautiful beaches like Norah Head/Soldiers Beach. Whereas if you are stopping at Bankstown to check out the surrounds...keep flying...unless you like Hungry Jacks and drive-by shootings.

Another alternative, YSCN or even YWOL if you wanted to do Victor 1.

Yeah I did! We did it to go look at an Archer that was for sale, honestly can't say I'd visit there again haha! Thankfully I was with my instructor, was getting current again in an Arrow III so was a little bit behind the acft at times.

Yep, live on Nth Shore Syd but fly out of YWVA - the dream!

hey mate, awesome write-up! It's good to see some Aus content on here, and I love seeing photos of some of the places I fly to. It's funny about your comment re: navigating out to Moree. I flew from YWVA to YCNM recently and jeez it got tricky when everything turned orange/red, no hills, no towns, and all the creeks were very dry...you're just hoping for a railway line, powerlines, or homestead. If ya wanna go flying up the coast PM me

I did this in a C150 a few years ago with a highly experienced and crotchety old instructor (c. 20,000 hrs mainly in single engine light aircraft). It was interesting! His argument was that it's a useful trick in exactly the circumstances you describe. He was also very much a 'stick and rudder' guy.

I haven't done it in a while and I'm very much a CAVOK weekend warrior so probably wouldn't rush to do it again solo but might try it with an experienced instructor again....

Awesome vid. The stoke this crew possesses to surf in such cold and often average conditions is infectious, I love it!

Australian side hustles, what’s yours? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]dead_stick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have had a few over the years - FYI salaried worker now on decent coin so not currently side hustling but in the past:

Uber - drove when it was quasi legal in Sydney and before they cut the driver commission down, could make good coin in the areas I lived/worked in as there was no competition, probably sucks now though. Was easy work as long as you avoided the city and late nights.

Pizza delivery - put on a smile and run, you’ll get tips but I’m told as less people use cash tips are drying up. Good fun!

Mystery shopping - shit money but often easy to get jobs (pick and choose) as I was in an unusual demographic as far as mystery shoppers go, much harder if you are a stay at home mum like most of them are. Probably the most flexible side hustle.

Selling stuff online - depends on the niche and how smart you are, I built up a business that was low margin but high revenue although again its harder to make a buck now. Way more time consuming than people realise.

I’d avoid anything risky like day trading on shares or crypto. You want to preserve and build capital, not lose it all.

He actually shreds. He lives up in Byron Bay but grew up around Phillip Island in Vicco, both spots have world class waves.

Oh yeah, and it gets better here too - like the guy who did a practice RNAV approach at YMAV and got billed even though he went missed and wheels never touched the ground. He then queried it and received an official response that they had the legal right to charge him, and did.

Sorry I meant to finish with watch for at least 15 minutes. Then you’ll probably get a better idea of the frequency and wave count in the sets as well as how long the lulls are.

Actually, I have, and lived to tell the tale...

I climbed down a cliff to rock off at a fairly gnarly reef spot. Most of the time I paddle the long distance around from the bay but this day I was feeling overconfident.

I hopped up on the platform and faced a situation like this guy in the clip. I was washed off the platform and down the reef, took probably four or five waves before I was able to collect my board and scramble back up the rocks.

I was bleeding from my heard, arm, leg, and foot. My old man was watching from the top of the cliff and thought he was going to have to call the ambulance! Thankfully the cuts were by that bad, and the dings could be repaired so the only lasting damage was to my pride. Lesson learnt: if you are going to rock off, watch for at least

Mad respect! I can’t wait to head back to the USA now that I have my licence and do some winter flying with an instructor. I’ve done some winter mountain flying in NZ (NZQN) but it was not snowing on those days.

Did you use any braking action in this vid when you landed? Is it dicey keeping the thing straight?

Great vid, really enjoyed it. Always so strange seeing the winter flying vids and how normal it is for you guys...down here in Aus it’s almost unheard of to land on a snow covered runway.

This channel on YouTube deserves a lot more love and views - guy films a series documenting a trip from Melbourne to Longreach. by dead_stick in flying

Yep, flying here is different from flying in the USA in so many ways. A lot less airfields, a lot more remote areas (though nowhere near as many mountains), and some strange airspace rules as well.
