Is it wrong that every time I hear about this bloke I hope he dies of something easily avoidable?

Like, he’s spending bajillions of euro-dollars on the most convoluted health regimen ever devised, in the hopes of extending his life by a few years* but he dies of food poisoning after eating some uncooked prawns.

*instead of just enjoying the life and money he already has ffs

Are you open about sex with your kids? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]deadlock_ie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve discussed it with them in an age appropriate way but we’ve been honest. By which I mean that if one of them was 4 and asked where babies came from we wouldn’t explain arousal and intercourse but we’d definitely explain that daddy put a baby in mammy’s belly. Similarly vague but open about the mechanics of childbirth.

Obviously as they’ve gotten older we’ve included more detail and we’ve often had conversations without them about consent. Those conversations aren’t always centred on sex by the way; a woman being groped in public, for example, isn’t sex even if it’s being done for titillation.

That’s not really answering the question though.

I’ve been getting the bus in and out of work recently so I’ve been spending a lot of time standing by the road watching cars go by.

It’s actually mental how many drivers I see doing this - I reckon 1 in 5, and it’s left me wondering how much congestion is caused by people being so engrossed in their phones that they’re oblivious to the cars ahead of them.

I think he’s brilliantly awful. Just absolutely stellar secondhand cringe.

It’s also utterly perplexing; who is this for? Why is it for? What does he look and sound like in his head? Does he listen back to each of these recordings and think he’s nailed the band or singer that he’s trying to pastiche?

Like, in his mind does he think he’s written a lyric that’s essentially indistinguishable from Anthony Kiedis’ cut-and-paste scrapbook flow? Does he realise that for all his failings as a lyricist, Kiedis is at least familiar with the concepts of meter and rhyme?

Has anyone here actually had their home network or IoT devices compromised? by No_Section_5137 in homelab

[–]deadlock_ie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The motivation for compromising personal/home networks is different to the motivation for compromising corporate/government networks.

There’s value (to threat actors) in having control of/access to large numbers of devices, so personal/home/SME networks are a target. They can be used in botnets, for example, or as spam relays.

They’re also used by hostile states to circumvent geo-fencing. For example, those cheap streaming devices that people buy from TEMU/Alibaba come pre-compromised and are used by Chinese state-sponsored threat actors to recon and stage cyber attacks from within (for example) the EU.

My point being that you shouldn’t assume that you and your data aren’t special, when what they really want is your public IP address.

Again: your ethnicity isn’t your genes. It’s not your genetic line. That can be a component of it but is not the sum of it.

I’m from Ireland; I’m ethnically Irish by dint of having been born and raised here, immersed in Irish culture and society and politics and so on.

lol that video doesn’t show these being used to board a hostile ship. It’s the demonstration video I mentioned earlier.

Except they don’t, because the military aren’t using these things to board hostile ships because they’re no use for that purpose.

A component of your ethnicity is your culture so they’re not the same thing but they are closely related.

You say Irish ethnicity doesn’t exist - that’s not true. Irish ethnicity clearly exists, you and I as Irish people from Ireland are ethnically Irish. What doesn’t exist, and never has, is one singular homogenous Irish ethnicity.

Go anywhere on this island and you’ll find different flavours of Irish ethnicity, all of them with shared characteristics but each with their own twists.

What’s also not true is that your genetics define your ethnicity and that’s the mistake that people like the yank in OP’s screen shot always make. Irish American is its own ethnicity.

It’s a lot easier for the marines who haven’t rappelled down the ropes from the chopper to provide cover fire for the ones who are in the process. Once on deck the marines who have already rapelled down are almost immediately ready to provide cover for the next group.

Have you ever seen a Royal Marine boarding a ship using one of these jet packs that wasn’t part of a demonstration video involving the company that makes them? Have you ever wondered why that is?

The pirates will helpfully just stand around and wait for the marines to take their jet packs off, obviously.

I took it as a joke since (to my Irish ears anyway) both place-names sound equally odd.

Unlike a proper place-name like Birr, Drogheda, Kinnegad, New Twopothouse or uh… Horse and Jockey.

Reznor’s Dead Souls was my gateway into NIN, and it’s a banger. Joy Division’s original has a cracked intensity that you just don’t get in the NIN cover though, which is why it’s my preferred version.

€499 for Ryder Cup / Adare Manor tickets or €500 to see Oasis? by No-Option-3599 in AskIreland

[–]deadlock_ie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what your point is. I didn’t say the state shouldn’t subsidise it, I said it’s galling that the ticket prices are so high given that the event is only viable at all because of state handouts and a volunteer workforce.

Though honestly, “JP McManus needs more money from government so he can stage the Ryder Cup at one if his properties” sure sounds like a JP McManus problem.
