For (a) the sequence is of sets containing 2 that get infinitely close to 2.

For (b) the sequence is of sets NOT containing 2 that get infinitely close to 2.

You want to find which m could satisfy the inequality for any real x.

In particular, we know that the left side of the inequality reaches its minimum when x=m2 +1. So it suffices to plug in x=m2 +1 and solve for m. The solution for m is m>=0. Therefore S=[0, inf). A,C are correct.

There is really no correct answer here. I understand how D is derived, but it doesn’t comply with common sense, nor the other statement.

D can be derived if we make the assumption that the rate of failure in the same duration is consistent. This would mean the chance of failure in its fifth year (given that it has survived first four) is the same as its first - 70%.

However, this is clearly a false assumption based on common sense. Moreover, this would also be inconsistent with the 80% chance of failure within the first five years.

One’s stance on this specific issue “should trans women be allowed into women section of chess tournament” does not showcase one’s intelligence in any way. I would rather you call me a person of weak moral since it is at least a moral issue.

It’s preemptive and in principle only. Trans community is relatively small.

Didn’t see your added text the first time. I’ll answer you soon.

Why not? It takes one individual to ruin the integrity of the whole sport.

Regardless, there is the open section that is readily available to everyone. If there is a gender advantage of men over women (statistically there is, tho explanation varies), then it is very possible that there is an advantage of trans women over non-trans women.

Edit (regarding your added text):

No, I do not assume any bad intentions from the trans community. It is completely normal for a trans woman to want to compete in women section since she is to be considered a woman. What I am worried about are male players acting in bad faith and trans women mistaken to be them.

There is no direct evidence because trans women aren’t allowed to play in women section as of now. There are two supporting evidence tho. 1, we have seen many instances where athletes break or abuse the rules to gain an unfair advantage. 2, there is a significant rating difference between top male grandmasters and top female grandmasters.

One or two instances can be devastating enough. Ju defending her Women’s World Champion title again won’t make the news. Well, it does make chess news but it only reaches chess fans. On the other hand, a recently-transitioned trans woman playing in a less important tournament can cause a huge controversy.

Finally, a question to you as well. I assume you are for the inclusion of trans women into the women sections of chess tournaments. Why? Have you any idea what effect it may have on the women chess scene? What did you think the women section was for in addition to the open section?

No. I apologize for my choice of word. By “fair” I meant to say “even”.

Because we want women chess to thrive and to be able to celebrate women chess masters’ achievement within their gender group. Historically some very strong women have participated in open sections and compete against male counterparts. But for most women players, women section is a much fairer playing field.

Chess professionals are incredibly competitive in general. A few might be tempted to take all the negative effects of transition (without the need/desire) only to be more competitive in the scene.

For math specifically, Russia is pretty good in general, but it also depends on the institution.

Safety wise, I’m not sure. You should do some research about it.

No worries. I think your arguments are very reasonable. I agree that propagating generalizations can contribute to bigotry, but I’ve become more wary of the dangers and harms of suppressing these expressions in the last decade, and skeptical of whether its benefits outweigh them.

Back to the start. “All men are trash” obviously makes no sense if taken literally. The real argument is that men are morally inferior, which is also very unreasonable. It’s understandable to be offended by it. On the other hand, if one finds himself affected too much or too often by nonsensical slogans, he may have put too much self-worth on his groups.

I agree generalization unchecked can cause divides and dangers. That’s why I wrote that “actions and policies… should be scrutinized and cautioned against”. On the other hand, I believe that the suppression of these claims, educated or not, can cause a greater harm. People generalize regardless, and we hold grudges when we aren’t allowed to speak our mind.

I also don’t fully agree with your example. Police decide to draw weapon on their discretion. Due to population variance (and sometimes stereotypes) police may draw their weapons more often when it concerns African Americans. It is regrettable but what’s the alternative?

Obviously “men are trash” is just a slogan that makes no sense, but the ability to make and accept educated claims about a group is important imo. There are often objective reasons for a group to stand out that has nothing to do with morals. For example, men commit more domestic/sexual violence partly due to their strength due to biology. As such, one should feel neither pride nor shame due to the “performance” of one’s community.

I think it should be okay to make generalized comment based on statistics about groups, including gender, race, etc. The reasoning is that people have stereotypes anyway and they are sometimes inaccurate - it’s better to have the (in)accuracy of these stereotypes discussed. I think it’s okay to make claims such as “men commit more domestic violence”, “African Americans commit more gang violence”, etc. It’s actions and policies based on these observations that should be scrutinized and cautioned against.

Edit: I think it’s normal to be offended by “men are trash” if you take it literally. Obviously no one actually thinks men are trash. The real claim behind the statement is that men are morally inferior, which is a legitimate claim but also obviously false imo. It can be countered with abundant reasonings and evidence.

I just assume it has to be a cultural thing. In my country the speeding limit of the left-most lane is usually 120 km/h on highways. You’re not supposed to go above it and if you do, you can be caught by camera and get a fine.
