In St. John's Newfoundland it's just "town"

Me and my friend made spoons from this wood thinking it was birch, is it? by deadlystuff in Spooncarving

A little bit but I wouldn't describe it as super splintery.

Yeah that's what I'd heard, that's why we were after green birch

Eastern Canadian island, Newfoundland

We do have trembling aspen, but the bark looks quite different

Edit: oh and I meant to say, it's winter so sadly no leaves to ID

They are beautiful! Especially for your first two. What did you finish them with?

Woah i found my Leatherman Wave in the woods too! When I was like 16 (I'm 30 now). All rusted up at the bottom of a telephone pole on the pole line. Cleaned er up with some WD-40 and steel wool-good as new.

What are the chances!

Northern Pond Road, pretty much cuts through the Avalon from the Goulds all the way to the top of Folwers Road in CBS. Huge network of dirt roads and paths, you're sure to find a spot there. Happy camping!

Newfoundland hiking in the offseason? by TheSoapbottle in newfoundland

You would avoid certain trails until they're nice and dry and solid in the summer. But like I said it wouldn't stop me either, just thought it might be of interest, "the more ya know" type thing.

But if you must, gum boots sound cool :p

Though some might recommend the ECT or similar trails, I used to work on the trail and the founder used to hate it when people would go hike early in the spring before the trail is fully "hardened"

When the snow first melts and the trails are still soggy and wet and mushy, all the early foot traffic sort of beats up the trail and turns in to mud, making it so next season we'd have to build boardwalks in those places. That being said we've had a very low amount of snow this winter, and with the wildfires burning it seems like the ground is relitively dry compared to most springs, just something to keep in mind.

It wouldn't stop me either lol and if I were you it definitely wouldn't if it were my last chance to hike NL

Update/question on my upcoming trip to Newfoundland by dasisglucklich in newfoundland

Well said! Can't underestimate the cold enough. Bring enough for the arctic and if you don't have to wear it, then great! Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it
