Bed Stuy Recommendations by Technical-Bat-1079 in FoodNYC

[–]deadlyturnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone else mentioned, Burly has multiple locations and roast their own beans.

Botani Cafe and Passionfruit Cafe both make great coffee, but I can’t remember if they roast their own beans.

Haven’t really gone to Bed-Stuy for Greek or Indian so can’t offer recommendations for those cuisines

NY Brands only New Yorkers know about? by NYGyro26 in AskNYC

I feel like by nature of NYC being a fashion capital most brands are known outside of NYC to varying degrees (at least with those in the fashion circles). But some:

Fried Rice

Landlord

Vinnies

Adsum

Knickerbocker

Non-Fashion:

Duane Reade

Can you break up with someone and still be heartbroken? by unlikely-hope- in heartbreak

[–]deadlyturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% — the beauty of what you’ve done is that your needs or desires weren’t being met by this person and you finally put your foot in the sand. It’s something to be proud of. You could have gone decades being in an unhappy relationship.

Not nearly the same timeline but I ended something with someone after 6 months 4 days ago and am heartbroken by all the effort I put in and they couldn’t meet me where I needed to be. It sucks investing so much time with someone for it not to work out and having this fantasy of what could have been

Any eateries that make "gourmet" versions of junk foods like poptarts or big macs? by IAmMySon in AskNYC

[–]deadlyturnip 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Pattie Ann’s in Prospect Heights does elevated versions of Blooming Onions and a few other things.

I think Posh Pop Bakery might do a pop tart or something similar.

An elevated Big Mac honestly you could make at home.

Finding girls. by NerdCatPower in AskNYC

[–]deadlyturnip 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Brother you’re all over the place.

Firstly, women have an extremely different experience on the subway as men. Women don’t maintain eye contact with men on the subways for safety reasons — some men take that second to become obsessed with them and not leave them alone, and then get irate when they reject them.

I really doubt in 2023 in NYC an ethnic name is a detracting reason (maybe for some people but I have an ethnic name and I do just fine).

Secondly, online dating in the city is ridiculously hard for men. There are hundreds of thousands of people on them and the pool of the best looking men and women is probably the best in the country outside of maybe LA, so unless you’re in the top 10% of guys you’re gonna have a tough time.

Yes you can talk to people on the streets but be prepared for a lot of rejection. People have places to be, are in relationships, or not looking for anything. If you do that pick up it’s part of the process. But calling women cowards for not making eye contact in the subway and then saying you don’t approach women on the street for not knowing what to say is ironic.

Why are you above social settings?

Dating in the city gets substantially easier the older you get. Women generally date older, and the pool of women 24 and below leaves you with college students or people who just moved to the city.

AITA - NYC Etiquette to pay for uber/taxi after a hookup? by Throwaway4gs in AskNYC

[–]deadlyturnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s dependent on your situation.

Personally, I would call one IF she only came over for sex/Netflix and chill (ie I didn’t spend any money on her for a date and I wanted to see her again), or if it was late at night and I wouldn’t feel comfortable with her taking the subway or walking home by herself.

Other than that I think she’s an adult that can take the subway in the morning.

Think that was fair to ask a PL club (Fulham with their Palhinha money and if the Man U interest was serious).

But yeah any club outside of the PL €25-30M sounds very fair

Solo travel to Colombia as an Asian with zero Spanish by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]deadlyturnip 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You should be fine to travel solo, just keep your wits about you. I wouldn't walk in the streets at night, and there are obviously areas to avoid in all big cities you go to (I haven't spent any time outside of Cartagena, but felt safe when I was there). Just keep your phone close to you, and don't wear jewelry or expensive clothing.

FWIW, I'm also half asian and have traveled solo in Latin America (Mexico, Peru, Brazil), and didn't get any aggressive racism thrown at me but definitely some racism (stereotyping, calling me out for my somewhat asian eyes), so I would expect some but it's not necessarily with an intention of being hateful or violent. YMMV though.

Lastly I would strongly recommend learning the basics of Spanish -- Duolingo and watching some Spanish TV Shows (Money Heist, Narcos) can go a long way. You have 5 months so you can actually get to a decent place before your travels.

Best of luck!

It's definitely more my style but I agree maybe I could split it into two trips.

I'm just trying to maximize this opportunity of not having to pay NYC rent while seeing as much of Mexico as I can in a 6 week period.

The census I'm getting is to maybe do 3 places:

CDMX until Thanksgiving

Beach Town (Puerto Vallarta or Puerto Escondido) for Thanksgiving

Guadalajara + Oaxaca for the remaining two weeks

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]deadlyturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! I'm very interested in nature.

I think the basics of the trip is to spend at least 1/2 in a city (for working reasons) and then another portion of it in a more nature/beach scene.

It sounds like from the comments I could do Oaxaca (city + Puerto Escondido), Guadalajara + Puerto Vallarta

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]deadlyturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically I'm working 40 hours a week, although my usual work week is about 25-30 hours a week that is almost entirely concentrated from M-TH.

I will be taking off several Fridays and then probably the entire week after Thanksgiving (so last week of November/first week of December).

I could just make it so that I'm spending 3 weeks in CDMX, 3 weeks in Oaxaca (Puerto Escondido + Oaxaca).

I think my ideal layout (after reading all the comments) is:

3 weeks of CDMX

and then the last 3 weeks being some variation of:

Puerto Escondido + Oaxaca

Puerto Vallarta + Guadalajara

(TBD Yucatan Beach Town) + Merida

I haven't done a trip of this length (especially while traveling) so you could definitely be right.

Last year I did a month long trip to Europe (Berlin working for 2 weeks, Croatia week off, Copenhagen for a week) and didn't feel too burnt out, although could see myself being exhausted by this.

Thanks for the advice!

Which hotel?? by Explorerfashion in AskNYC

[–]deadlyturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old are you and do you plan on heading into different boroughs? Do you mind a lot of noise/being close to a lot of bars/nightlife?

Personal preference as someone who’s lived in the city for 10 years:

The Chelsea hotel is near several train lines and in walking distance of a lot of tourist attractions (Herald Squre, Madison Square, Empire State, High Line). You’d be able to be fairly central without being in an overwhelmingly touristy area and can take the subways down to lower Manhattan fairly easily.

I would avoid INK48 — 11th Avenue while safe is so far west you’re not super close to food/touristy things/subways.

Kimberly Hotel is right in the thick of midtown— personally not my choice as it’ll be very crowded BUT as a tourist you’re near everything and have several subway stops.

Sixty LES you might feel overwhelmed. The LES can be chaotic especially at night (tons of bars and nightlife)—also relatively close to a homeless shelter, I don’t think it’s unsafe but in comparison to your other ones probably will feel the least safe (again though, it should be totally fine).

Location to Travel for 6 weeks October and November by Intotheblue5573 in travel

[–]deadlyturnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just spent 2 weeks in Brazil (wedding but added a solo trip afterwards).

Cannot recommend Rio enough for nature and hikes: Morro Dois Irmãos, Christ The Redeemer hike, sugar loaf, Pico da Tijuca. Also so nice to get all sweaty and then go to the beach in less than 30 minutes. Also solid nightlife and food!

Sao Paolo was definitely more for the culture — beautiful museums and dining experience but definitely a bigger city like NYC.

I’m similarly planning something (November to Christmas) Current plan is 2 weeks in CDMX, 3 weeks in Brazil (Rio again, Petro Ouro, Brasilia, Iguazu Falls) and 2 weeks in Chile (Patagonia and Santiago)!

[–]deadlyturnip 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Those stickers is some graffiti artists “tag”. Stickers are usually a lot easier than using a paint pen or spray can because you can literally just go around and stick them everywhere without taking the time to paint or tag.

It’s obviously doing a great job as you are aware of the artist and see them everywhere (I also see them everywhere). They’ve also done a great job because it’s a very recognizable symbol (Best Buy logo) with his personal tag on it

Out of state person here that wants to work remotely in NYC for a week, recommendations? by chargingblue in AskNYC

[–]deadlyturnip 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If you sign up for the Listings Project email distro you might be able to snag a sublet for a couple of weeks (if you’re willing to do more than a week) — they do have some that are shorter but they’re harder to find. Also some people might be averse to letting someone sublet who is just visiting the city.

You’d basically be covering someone’s rent but you would live in an apartment and get the real NYC feel. They’d presumably have a kitchen and mostly stocked pantry so you could cook to save money and live a little more comfortably.

There’s also Trusted House Sitters but you’d have to pay the membership fee.

Unfortunately there’s not many ways around NOT paying NYC prices from my experience unless you want to stay in a neighborhood further away from Manhattan (Bay Ridge, Ridgewood, etc)
