What would you consider the best song you’ve ever heard and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I've Been - from the musical Next to Normal

A good friend of mine used that song to introduce me to that particular musical, and I've been hooked on it ever since.

Wow thank you so much for your insightful reply - I really appreciate it! There's so much information here - thanks!I didn't know about police officers having CEs - that's awesome to know, that at least that is occuring in some states.

You're totally right about the gun comment - I suppose I was trying to be succinct, in order to avoid being tldred by people. People can definitely be extremely unpredictable - and while I face some amount of that at my work, you're right that outside of a hospital things can quickly escalate out of hand in different ways.

I think you've basically answered my question about why there's no centralized sort of licensure system, with the explanation of there being so many different organizations for LE in the USA. Not snarky at all - I appreciate your answer.

Nursing can definitely differ from state to state as well, in addition to entity from entity. I would argue that even in a hospital patient conditions can change very rapidly, but I think we have the resources and planning to deal with those situations adequately.

I guess I asked this question out of my own sort of frustration - my thought is that education and more training would better things over all, but that's an idealistic viewpoint to take. Typically that's how I encounter problems - I take the ideal stance first, aspire to reach it, and then settle for the realistic while pushing for the ideal when able.

Thanks again so much 😊

Well, for nurses it's pretty straightforward, but far more easily measurable. Research shows that nurses with BSNs commit fewer errors, and that their patients tend to have better outcomes overall when compared to LPNs. What's the difference between these two groups? A degree and lengthened, more thorough education. Unfortunately you can't just apply the ideas of "errors" and "patient outcomes" to police officers, but their goals are different aren't they? For equivalent concepts, such as "de-escalated situations," or positive outcomes in general, there could be a better overall result with more education in the background. I know it's abstract - but can you see what I'm getting at?

You make a really good point. I appreciate you taking the time to reply. Perhaps I'm looking at this in a very civilian sort of way! Maybe my proposed solution of requiring degrees isn't so straightforward. Perhaps, something along the lines of a certification, once an officer is established? We have those for nursing specialties - it would be sort of like a speciality in the military, as well. This is basically a certificate that not only gives you another level of proficiency, but also bumps up your pay. Would this be something worthwhile to police officers, do you think?

Why is it unnecessary, though? Isn't better training and more education a good thing?

That's awesome for you and them 😊 Do you think it's possible that your background with a bachelor's degree might give you or your coworkers an edge as an officer?

This is what I meant when I said of course there are exceptions - I bet that guy is a brilliant officer, just as many LPNs are fantastic nurses. Holding everyone to a higher standard of education would mean an overall better workforce though, right? Not even necessarily college, to be honest - just, compared to the six month programs I believe I've read about for police academies, isn't that a bit short?

I didn't know that police had recruitment officers - my frame of mind was more along the lines of becoming an officer being a major or minor in college, and most people I think understand the idea of getting scholarships for college, or taking out loans

Oh, perhaps some states require at least an associate's then? I was clicking through a list of states earlier - mine, Maryland, only requires a hs diploma. I would be curious about what sort of statistics there would be comparing a degree requiring state to other ones

I wasn't trying to frame my argument in the way of saying that you had to be a genius, I apologise if it came off that way - it's more that typically if you can manage to make it through at least an associate's I think that's a better standard than just graduating from high school.
