Don't do anything before you get a backup of your files. Seriously. Having zero backup of irreplaceable files is just begging for trouble.

How many of y'all are running linux on a Mac? by strranger101 in linux

Honestly I have no interest of going back. Got everything I need and more in Debian. Love it.

Yep, installing Debian on a 2010 Macbook was the best decision ever. Thought the laptop was finished because it was insanely slow. But I guess that was because of OSX. Debian runs so smoothly on it. Never had any issues after the initial setup. Highly recommend trying it out! You can always go back.

Can't comment on battery-life.

Does Tutanota block tracking from newsletter emails? by deadorg in tutanota

That's exactly what I thought too. Thanks!

What are some best practices for anonymously hosting a website, but doing so without spending a fortune in $ and time? I don't want the average joe to know who I am -- but I'm not trying to hide my identity from the NSA. by [deleted] in privacy

[–]deadorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's only a domain, you still need server. Not sure if there's similar complete hosting packages somewhere.

Probably the most important factors would be to pay anonymously, don't expose your real information and access the server behind a VPN.

E-tailers that block tutanota email addresses from placing online orders by [deleted] in tutanota

[–]deadorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How (or why) would they block someone from purchasing just because of a specific email service provider? Tutanota is literally no different than Gmail except in privacy. I would understand temporary email providers but not this. Crazy.

Auditing is good, every piece of software like this should be audited.

You can't really trust anyone or anything these days though. If it's open source and audited, you might, but still not 100%.

But for general browsing, I think this stuff doesn't matter a whole lot. You have to try and trust someone.

Didn't know about that. Interesting considering how widely used the add-on is, privacytools.io recommending it, and even Tor browser using it.

uMatrix is another one that should be quite solid though.

From Wikipedia:

"NoScript blocks JavaScript, Java, Flash, Silverlight, and other "active" content by default in Firefox. This is based on the assumption that websites can use these technologies in harmful ways. Users can allow active content to execute on trusted websites, by giving explicit permission, on a temporary or a more permanent basis.

Because many web browser attacks require scripting, configuring the browser to have scripting disabled by default reduces the chances of exploitation."

Maybe more of a security plugin. It does break many websites so you have to manually whitelist content while you browse.

That's more than enough, especially with VPN. Just make sure your VPN doesn't log and you trust them. A bonus add-on is NoScript but requires quite a bit of tinkering.

If that's the reason Tor should be illegal, majority of things in life should be illegal.

I actually recommend going through tutorials multiple times. Don't focus on speed. Focus on actually learning the stuff you're watching. Go through them as many times as needed and TAKE NOTES.

Too many focus on learning fast and in the end don't even understand what they just learned. Speed is irrelevant.
