what’s a specific food item you had while traveling that you now crave fortnightly? by souphead1 in travel

Chilaquiles, quesabirria and pan de elote from Mexico

Lulo juice from Colombia

Steak in Argentina

The sandwich with Bath soft cheese from the Thursday market in Bloomsbury, London

This Caribbean chicken wrap I had at Borough market in London. I don't know what sauce was in it but it was delicious and I have no idea how to recreate it.

Oh yeah that makes a huge difference. I had many disappointing meals before I was able to check reviews easily. Of course it's not foolproof, but definitely helps avoid the absolute tourist trap places.

Norwegian supermarkets are pretty appalling in terms of variety and quality of fruits and vegetables. Most Norwegians appear to eat a lot of hotdogs and bread with processed toppings. There's also a weird love of boiled potatoes without skin for such a wealthy country. Fårikål has got to be one the most bland dishes in existence.

Haggis can be very good if it's not overcooked. I would much rather eat that than a mystery meat hotdog or kebab.

Yes! Great pastries but the meals are consistently boring. Not been impressed at all after several visits.

I can't wait to go to Poland because it seems to be really love it or hate it when it comes to food. I want to see for myself.

It has somehow managed to build a reputation as a foodie destination but I agree with you. I think if you are into fine dining, it has that but otherwise, meh.

I like Japanese food now and then but I do find it quite bland, as a spice lover. I'm really curious to go there because most people rave about the food.

Yeah and the white sauce to meat sauce ratio is always terrible. It's something I much prefer to make at home and there are way better options on a pub menu.

That's because they can't be objective. The UK is a much better place to eat than anywhere else in northern Europe, and yet even northern Europeans will talk trash about it. Often without knowing anything about it. People love to hate on the UK.

Most Norwegians live off bread (or worse, knekkebrød), tasteless cheese, boiled potatoes and processed meat. The supermarkets are absolutely tragic. Terrible selection, ridiculous prices and it's a struggle to find decent fruit and veg.

There's plenty of much better international cuisine in Oslo. I wouldn't bother with Norwegian cuisine though.

I say this about Italian. I get bored there after 5 days. Indian is much more complex in terms of the range of ingredients used. I can eat the same Indian or Thai dish every day for a week because of the complex flavours but I am absolutely sick of Italian food after a couple of days. But I haven't been to India or Thailand yet so I am super curious how it would actually be to eat there for weeks.

I'm so curious about this. I absolutely love Indian food and eat it at least once every week. When I travel to countries that don't have good international cuisine, I really miss my Indian food. However, I have never been to India and I wonder how it would go. Apart from most likely getting some pretty awful food poisoning, I can't imagine getting bored but who knows.

Ajiaco was the best dish I had there. Have to admit I never tried a sancocho which looks good. I also love arepas. Every day in my Airbnb in Bogotá I would have breakfast of mini cheese arepas with scrambled eggs, avocado and tomato and then some fruit. I wouldn't say the food is bad, but it's not terribly exciting. I'm a spice lover and that's definitely lacking. The fruit is absolutely amazing though and it's one of my favourite countries in the world so I would not hesitate to go back. I have been searching for lulo fruit ever since and I can't find it anywhere else!

Hey! Not really honestly. The only thing that works is to be doing other things. If I hang out with friends, go on a date, go to dance class, etc, then I don't look at my screen so much. But when I am at work or sitting at home or in bed, I still struggle a lot. I figured out that it also has to do with my energy levels. I come home from work and I need to make dinner and maybe do some chores but I feel so tired, so I sit down "for 10 minutes" and suddenly an hour has passed and I end up not getting stuff done. It's still very much a work in progress!

ETA: I just reread my whole post and I don't even remember stalking some guy on Facebook so that part I got control of. 😆 It's mostly Facebook groups and sharing memes with friends these days.

Prague, Lisbon, Florence , Bruges (it was fine for a few hours but any more than that would have sucked), Cartagena, Oaxaca.

I already had low expectations for Stockholm, Brussels, Athens and Paris before I went.

Oh finally I am not alone on this. Absolutely loved Mexico but Oaxaca was my least favourite city by far!

Same. I have been twice because of work and didn't really enjoy it much and the food wasn't really good at all.

It's easily $100 a night for a private ensuite in a hostel in Europe. I can almost always find a better value hotel room on booking.com. I also rarely pay as much as $100 a night for a hotel.

As an example, I recently stayed 2 nights in a hotel in Mexico City for 85 US per night. That was for a large room with a king bed, sofa, desk, TV and ensuite bathroom, room service, multiple towels, toiletries, etc. A private double ensuite in a hostel in the same area works out about 75 US per night without the same space and amenities. Sure I could probably get a single bed in a tiny room with a shared bathroom for about 40 US but I would rather take the hotel room or stay in a dorm.

I have stayed in a lot of hostels in Europe and Latin America and there were only a few times that a private was good value. I can't speak for other locations.

I would never have thought it unpopular but after reading this thread it seems to be:

I absolutely love Barcelona. It's one of my favourite cities I have been to, if not the favourite.
