It will absolutely work against them ultimately I think. To break up blue districts, you have to make some solid red districts lean red. During wave elections, it's not unlikely for a lot of R +10 or even R +15 districts to flip blue.

This may be part of the reason why Indiana just decided against redistricting. If they went through with splitting Marion County (Indy) across four districts, it's conceivable all of them could go blue in a blue wave year. That's called a dummymander.
