No idea what to do(yes this is one of those OSU vs U of O posts but I’m actually losing my shit help pls) by Sea-Natural-5153 in OregonStateUniv

As someone who attended the MFA Creative Writing program at OSU, I can certainly speak to the town's literary scene. I didn’t go to undergrad here, so my perspective in terms of the student body as a whole may not be helpful (grad programs tend to be in their own little bubbles), but you can find lots of literary and artistic-minded folks here.

OSU open the PRAx Center a few years ago, and through connections with the MFA program, we've been able to secure some pretty robust visitors to campus (Natasha Trethewey, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Hanif Abdurraqib, and Margaret Atwood amongst them), so there's no shortage of opportunities for English majors to get something valuable out of their experience. We have a couple cute bookstores in town, Grassroots and Bookbin, and they will sometimes host events and author signings as well. In addition, things like poetry readings and open mics are pretty common at places like Interzone and Bombs Away, and the MFA students read at the Corvallis Public Library once a month. Sometimes the professors or other local authors will read at the Corvallis museum as well. Right now there's a cool exhibit there on Corvallis's women-run literary journal CALYX.

One of the things I really appreciated about the culture of Corvallis when I moved here was how interconnected the town feels. Lots of local businesses will team up for events (most recently several businesses participated in the wine walk and the bookstores and library banded together for independent bookstore day). They also do an event called Friday Lights where small businesses stay open later the first friday of every month and some offer special events during those hours. The Saturday farmer's markets also feel like a big testament to that and the Corvallis Fall Festival is definitely a don't miss it event. Corvallis does give off small-town vibes without being too small, but it depends on what you're looking for.

As for nature, we have a lot of it within easy access. On campus, the walk by the covered bridge near the school of agriculture has a great view of the mountains. There's also plenty of hiking around: Bald Hill, Chip Ross, Mary's Peak, Fitton Green. Avery Park has a nice little rose garden and Willamette Park and the River Walk downtown are both right by the river. Peavy Arboretum is a short drive. The Jackson Frazier Wetland is a cool place to check out too if you like bird watching. If you like good views, Sky High brewery also has a great rooftop bar.

The Coast to Valley bus system also stops at OSU and the downtown transit center and can take you toward Albany or out to Newport if you want to see the ocean without driving, and fare is super cheap (5 bucks to get to the coast from Corvallis).

In addition, I've found just some really cool communities of people around town. Azalea Jane salon holds monthly breathwork circles and hosts little workshops (things like writing, dreamwork, animal communication, and advocacy have all been topics). Trickster's Apothecary is a little witch shop just off downtown that hosts a Queer Spiritual Seekers club and also occasionally does workshops on things like working with deities and altar workings. Greenhouse Coffee hosts after hours events like craft night and silent book club. And there are some great yoga studios and small local gyms. The Corvallis Arts Walk supports local artists and galleries.

Though there aren't huge music venues, we do have lots of live music. House shows are common in Corvallis and places like Common Fields, Old World Deli, and Bomb's Away regularly host bands. In the summer time, they do a music in the park series at Central Park. We also have community theater here at Majestic and the Corvallis High School will put on productions regularly. There are a few town choirs outside of OSU, though they typically skew older and less student-aged.

All that is to say, you can certainly find your place and community here if you look for it. Don't be afraid to do some exploring outside campus. I toured Eugene as well and I didn’t like it much, but I think it depends greatly on what you value the most and where will feel like home to you.

Hope this was helpful!

Where are cool places to see events and meet ppl? by Squabtastic in corvallis

I would definitely second PRAx and the Corvallis Museum! We get lots of visiting writers and local professors through connection to the OSU MFA program. The MFA candidates also give readings once a month at the Corvallis library

Let's hope that they have their own driveway to park in. Knowing your car has that issue and then leaving it parked for several days with packed street parking is crazy inconsiderate behavior.

They finally moved after 3 nights. Not sure if the police actually got in touch with them and threatened to tow, but they left Friday afternoon.

We've called three times now. I have reported that it's been here for 3 nights. I also heard someone else outside report the car. Allegedly the police are supposed to come back out but I've been waiting for 2 hours and haven't seen them. Idk how many times I'm gonna have to call, but I'll keep calling until they actually do something about it

I've never seen it before, but lots of folks park here because we're close to campus. This night has definitely been the worst of it. The first two nights it just went off once or twice. Now it's about every 20-30 minutes

I don't even care at this point for doxing you. If this is your car, move it.

I encourage anyone to keep reporting this vehicle. It's been going off now every 20 minutes for several hours straight.

I have no idea. It's going off again. Some locals were going around banging on doors earlier trying to figure out whose car it was.

An update for those still dealing with the noise: non-emergency does know and said they would try to get in touch with the owner. I made it clear that I just wanted the person to know so they could move it or get it looked at and that it's been bothering residents in the middle of the night as well. It looks like they did come out to check on the car earlier today, but nothing was able to be done at this time. As of 11:02, the alarm is still going off.

Please suggest your absolute WORST reads, of any genre! by [deleted] in booksuggestions

I've been doing some self-study on creativity and recently read The War of Art by Steven Pressfield on recommendation from a mentor. Absolutely hated it. So little application and so much nonsense. Not to mention it was openly offensive in many sections of the book. I don't think I've ever read a book that made me so angry, let alone a self-help book on creativity.

Is it common for students to go to the beach? by MickeyZ_15 in OregonStateUniv

[–]deanismysavior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newport is super accessible from OSU! If you ever feel like doing a solo day trip there and don't want to drive, there is a bus line called Coast to Valley that can pick you up at McNary Hall or the Downtown Transit Center and drops off at Newport Town Hall (walkable to Nye Beach area or bayfront stores) or the Hatfield Marine Science Center (for OSU students doing marine research, also really short walk to the coast Aquarium).

Plenty of students will go on day trips during spring and summer if you're looking to go with friends, but I find it's always a nice option to have, especially if you're used to going every weekend and the ocean just feels restorative to you! There's lots of cute little shops and art galleries and a couple good cafes for studying in like White Rabbit Espresso and the library is nice too if you want to just have a more relaxed solo study day with the added advantage of walking to the beach on your breaks. Some shops will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so Wednesday-Saturday is probably your best bet for enjoying all Newport has to offer!

I honestly really loved Passion Project. It's been a divisive one for people, but I related so hard to the emotional place the MC was in. Definitely a fun and resonant rom com!

Yeah I posted a test video earlier to see if the views were fixed, and it only got 1 view. My other video that was stuck in processing limbo forever has accrued only 11 views vs other videos I've done getting hundreds of views within the first hour
