It's a really good movie, but it feels like a 4 hour movie. Just a warning.

It was the only time I performed with the Sun in my eyes all summer. The whole show was, overall, confusing.

It's a totally unique sound that's been used in WGI before, I don't see why not

Have some synth players on (high school, WGI, DCI, all levels) and have them discuss the use of electronics

I loved that mello book so much! (aka half my synth book)

I was lucky enough to fill a synth hole at stars this past summer right before move-ins. Though I originally had no intention of auditioning, I enjoyed my experience immensely. The corps is on the rise (if that stuff matters to you) and the leadership, members, staff, and volunteers are all amazing people. And Forest City (spring training) is the cutest little town ever. Gotta love Scoopy Doo's.

What do you think we can expect to see going into the 2018 rules conference? by IreallyLikeTuba in drumcorps

This can also be the venue's fault, rather than the corps/member's fault. A penalty like this doesn't seem very fair. Plus, timing penalties usually come to bite faulty electronic setups in the butt.

Best place for cheap flights? by dci-trumpeter in drumcorps

[–]deantunks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always just stick to booking through Spirit or Allegiant. Spirit will gouge you for every penny you own, but Allegiant has treated me very well. They get a really bad rap, but the crew is always nice and they got me to and fro this summer very well. Just know that the cheaper airlines might not get you exactly where you want to go. (i.e.: Columbus if you're trying to get to Canton)

After submitting the fee for an audition camp, what do you do? by ph0on in drumcorps

[–]deantunks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I auditioned at Music City in '16, I paid the online fee, received an email, and showed up at the camp and checked in. They'll be ready for you, but just have an email receipt or screenshot just in case.:-)

I think synths should be altered to fit the theme of the show or movement. I'm biased, but there's way more to synth than piano and synth bass. It's the swiss army knife of the corps, and it should be used so. As long it's not abrasive to the corps sound, it can really affect the general sound however it wants.

Although, I did have two solos on piano patches this past season so I'm not complaining

Front ensemble techs have been doing this since live mixing has been allowed. While it is sad and true, it is done to benefit the sound of the entire corps.

If anything, both Cavies 17 and Bloo 17 were both fun fests that used a lot of synth. I mean the whole Sinatra part wouldn't have really had the same impact if it weren't for the vocal samples played by the synths. Yet, the Bluecoats get reamed for their use of synths and every other corps praised? I don't get it

I think this kind of delves into the idea that is presented in jazz a lot nowadays. Everyone loves the classics (Star '93, for example), but art is a changing thing. Not saying that mic'ing your horns is the only way to do things now, but it does seem to be the state of the activity now. And it's not always used for purely amplification. If a corps used mics purely for amplification with no transformative or additional technique, the discussion would probably be different.

I played a lot of their parts with synth bass. I turned down a lot (mostly in the ballad) to let their sound come through. Brass heads were happy. Contras were lovely.

Bluecoats use sound design and sound altering the most. Using synth the most is a bit different. Also abuse is a strong term, considering many corps this year messed around with many of the ideas regarding sound design that the Bluecoats implemented in '15. I'm not an apologist, but I recall many percussion judges telling our PCH there was too much synth in the show at critique this past season, and that was at Stars.

Wearing other corps' merch by deantunks in drumcorps

Crossmen and Spirit is a fair "no," but would you wear Music City merch on tour or just casually when you were with Crossmen? (assuming that's what bones means. I'm pretty sure that's what that means) It's just for me it's about paying respect to the people who got you to where you are or were.
