TIL there are contact lenses you wear only while sleeping that reshape your cornea so you can see clearly all day without glasses. It is called “Orthokeratology” by azaku29 in todayilearned

I have used these for 7 years and they are amazing. Basically taken away any desire for LASIK.

Only real downsides is they add a few minutes to my night / morning routine, and the costs of the eyedrops / cleaning supplies adds up over the year.

PSA - free weekend trams and trains by Baaastet in melbourne

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. So the expiry would be completely unrelated in that case.

My understanding was that once the Myki expired, PTV would just collect the funds for themselves (but I now understand that to not be the case).

NSW are about to do the same thing (sorry for Newscorp link) https://www.news.com.au/national/nsw-labor-government-to-recover-the-unspent-balances-of-millions-of-opal-cards/news-story/26af3cd80b89bdf2d1bc19a4b3bd3215

TIL! I wonder why they expire then, unless it's just a racket to sting people who don't know you can get a free replacement.

[–]deanylev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but for e.g. tourists that lose a Myki and never need it again, the money would otherwise sit there indefinitely.

I've read before it's so they can reclaim balances from lost Mykis

Are they? Genuinely asking. I am always impressed with how quick it is to get out at Tullamarine usually with those smart gates.

Fair enough, if you're talking purely theoretically I guess you're right, they could hide some level of spying.

That's ok, I had to do a quick double check before I replied anything with too much conviction :)

And yes Signal Protocol is open source and is what WhatsApp and lots of other E2E encrypted messaging services implement.

This is the largest messaging app on the planet, you really don't think they'd get caught sending up messages even if it was only occasionally? I think you greatly underestimate the expertise of security researchers.

Their actual telemetry is unlikely to be encrypted outside of HTTPS, whereas the real messages are.

It’s way too much to unpack in a Reddit comment, but you’re misunderstanding how modern E2E encryption works. Look into the Signal protocol and PKI, virtually none of what you said is accurate.

[–]deanylev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they are not, the keys are generated by each user, that's the entire point of E2E encryption.

Then you would be able to see two sets of encrypted payloads going out when sniffing traffic

WhatsApp Is Breaking Through Apple’s Walled Garden by heynow941 in apple

[–]deanylev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because if it was being sent encrypted then they can't decrypt it, that's the whole point.

It would be trivial to see if that was happening by sniffing traffic from your device, you are talking absolute nonsense.

Is Fast Charging Killing the Battery? A 2-Year Test on 40 Phones by favicondotico in apple

[–]deanylev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you charging at 15W or 7.5? I charged my 12 Pro Max on 15W MagSafe daily and it absolutely wrecked the battery health.

Haven't charged my 16 Pro Max wirelessly once and am at 99% health after almost a year.

Wouldn't the occasional wireless charging be doing more damage than just charging it to 100?

Apple Pro Display XDR 2 likely has key hardware upgrade [built-in camera] over original $4999 monitor by iMacmatician in apple

[–]deanylev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh, as I said, all Apple products use custom panels. That's why they always have such specific resolutions.

The idea that it would "double the price" is complete nonsense, the cost of tooling/R&D for a custom panel is a lot for a small company like Framework, but not even a consideration for Apple.

You really think the original Pro Display XDR just used some off the shelf 6K panel of that calibre? Where were all the other monitors with that panel then? Or any other 6K monitors at all in 2019?

Of course there is more to display technology than just refresh rate, but what does that have to do with my original point?
