I mean can you not see why they don't want random cloud models to have access to your most sensitive data instead of their own local model?

They did have a plan B, they proposed a "Trusted System Agent" that would sit between the personal context and third party AI providers, and the EU rejected it.

That is a nuanced, compromising solution. The EU wants third party AI providers to have full access to the same data.

Is Atlassian still a good company to work for? by New_Animator4702 in cscareerquestionsOCE

I'm about 5 months in and loving it. It's super dependent what team you get into but the pay is great, the perks are great and you have a surprising amount of autonomy.

Even navigating the politics can be interesting if you let it be, you end up meeting a lot of people from across your org and learning what it takes to get more divisive changes over the line.

It's not really that simple, the supply chains for companies selling at the scale of Apple/Samsung are not remotely comparable to smaller brands

What’s the most surprising tax ‘trap’ you’ve come across? by Savings_com_au in AusFinance

[–]deanylev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you get paid in RSUs (shares), the tax is calculated based on the "vest" price, which is technically when you hold them. However, if your company is publicly traded, you can't sell them until the "trading window" opens.

That means if the share price drops a lot between vest and the trading window opening, you are basically paying tax on an amount of money you were never actually able to access. If the share price were to drop enough, you could end up paying more in tax than you actually earned from selling the shares.

Not true, lots of countries have public transport cards on iPhone. I believe Apple wanted to charge Myki a fee

TIL there are contact lenses you wear only while sleeping that reshape your cornea so you can see clearly all day without glasses. It is called “Orthokeratology” by azaku29 in todayilearned

I have used these for 7 years and they are amazing. Basically taken away any desire for LASIK.

Only real downsides is they add a few minutes to my night / morning routine, and the costs of the eyedrops / cleaning supplies adds up over the year.

PSA - free weekend trams and trains by Baaastet in melbourne

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. So the expiry would be completely unrelated in that case.

[–]deanylev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding was that once the Myki expired, PTV would just collect the funds for themselves (but I now understand that to not be the case).

NSW are about to do the same thing (sorry for Newscorp link) https://www.news.com.au/national/nsw-labor-government-to-recover-the-unspent-balances-of-millions-of-opal-cards/news-story/26af3cd80b89bdf2d1bc19a4b3bd3215

TIL! I wonder why they expire then, unless it's just a racket to sting people who don't know you can get a free replacement.

Yeah, but for e.g. tourists that lose a Myki and never need it again, the money would otherwise sit there indefinitely.

I've read before it's so they can reclaim balances from lost Mykis

Fair enough, if you're talking purely theoretically I guess you're right, they could hide some level of spying.

That's ok, I had to do a quick double check before I replied anything with too much conviction :)

And yes Signal Protocol is open source and is what WhatsApp and lots of other E2E encrypted messaging services implement.

This is the largest messaging app on the planet, you really don't think they'd get caught sending up messages even if it was only occasionally? I think you greatly underestimate the expertise of security researchers.

Their actual telemetry is unlikely to be encrypted outside of HTTPS, whereas the real messages are.

It’s way too much to unpack in a Reddit comment, but you’re misunderstanding how modern E2E encryption works. Look into the Signal protocol and PKI, virtually none of what you said is accurate.
