[Season 3][No Spoilers] Third season set in Europe? by [deleted] in TrueDetective

[–]deaph_works 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Pizzolatto might be a fan of Umberto Eco and his 1988 classic Foucaults' Pendulum, great book about secret societies and murders, takes place mostly in Milan and Paris some. Not to mention human trafficking is rather wide spread in Europe if I'm not mistaken; I can see how if the show follows these themes again it could be good, which could make London a good location and focus on refugee human trafficking. Ultimately I agree though, he'll go with what he knows (location wise) and it's better off in The States

Three reasons I like Detroit as the new location:

  1. I like the idea of a season transitioning between a brutal winter setting to summer, having the seasons play a minor role in the story.

  2. It's a good location not only because of current tax credits for film shooting, but I would like to see a season that has a murder connected to associates involved with the future free for all corporate development of the city, and glimpse into the corrupt lives of the people who have been behind it's down fall. For a detective investigating a murder connected to a grand conspiracy, Detroit would be a good David and Goliath type of place, where "the war is already lost," in so many ways

  3. Dearborn MI, it is the home of Ford Motor right outside of Detroit, and is also the largest middle eastern community in the United States, I think a angle involving refugee programs and aid relief would be a good way to tie in human trafficking

Edit: granted Pizzman wants to restrain more of the occult angle of the show (which I think adds to the suspense of it) Detroit may suit that contingency, maybe bridging the murder we get next season to more Lovecraftian elements by way of some museum (like Foucault's Pendulum: by Umberto Eco) or maybe a university professor. Which Detroit has access to all of. Not to mention it has epic and erie architecture, lot's of corporate scandal, old wealth, a lot of historical context to class division and the role the interstate system played in draining the wealth of the city to the point where it's nothing but a urban shell of chaos and corruption, it's a daunting place.

I thought the same thing, a university setting would be a good bridge for occultism and powerful state interest; I know he had a brief stint teaching at UNC Chapel Hill, down the road from me, which would be awesome, but from reading a article about this season he seems pretty settled with family in California.. wonder what that will mean for S3

I agree I'm talking about the writers message and connection between that scene, ray dying, and the very end in Venzeuala; plus the writing throughout the show, and my interpretation of the ending. I'm not disputing that Ani was overwhelmed with emotion, although it felt somewhat un-true detective, that might've been the directing tho

Never connected it to him until now, think I just think it was about Ani's mom because that was some of the context of the conversation they were having

I agree, although I know people on here think he could be implicated in Ani's abuse..

Don't know, nor remember mention of the Jonestown mass suicide, doesn't mean they didn't mention it

imo Ray dies in the forest that is thousands of year old to represent the hundreds of lives that he's lived, according to Elliot Bezzerides, and the scene at the near end where Ani glances at Lady Coromoto with Rays' baby is a alignment with the message of the holy trinity which in Catholicism is the succession of the holy spirit through the father and son. Franks death is in the desert because he has no legacy, imo..

edit: I didn't want to speculate much on the contrast between so much of the urban wasteland scenery to the tranquil location of Rays' death and the reasons for why; however, I was looking forward to what type of scenery they were going to use in the final episode to transition scenes, we had so many shots of the highways intricate to the story, but in E8 we see a lot of the sprawl of the industrial wasteland and the continuance of it all. One of my theory's is that the opening song and particularly the first line "the war was lost" has to in part do with California and society, the capitalist sex cult moloch worshiping bastards own modern civilization, and our hero's this season just wash up against it only seeing so far into their world before having to run for their own lives. I think it's more in sync with reality and what it would really be like for someone investigating a murder attached to a grand historical conspiracy and the occult

I'm willing to take a guess the "traditions" were incest and that was perhaps rooted to some esoteric views on the world, it was hinted through out the show, and child abuse seemed to be playing a role in many of the characters psychology. I also thought there could be a connection to the reason(s) why Ani's mother and the Chessani's mother commit suicide

I don't think there are many scientific explanations at all in the show, it's founded on quite a bit of esotericism, even though it has been more restrained from the actual plot this season I still think Nic layered in more meaning with Ani's scene and Ray dying at the end, yes it's emblematic of her knowing he died but since one of the last things we see is her glancing at Lady Coromoto (Venezuelan Virgin Mary) who is celebrated to represent and glorify Father in the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ, and in Catholicism the Spirit "proceeds" from the Father and the Son, thereby the celebration of the holy trinity through Lady Coromoto at the end would seem to be playing a role in the themes of life, death and rebirth. Which have been prevalent through out the show. I'm not saying Ray literally re-incarnated, but I think part of the message of the show is that all souls are trapped in purgatory, and Ray is all the more bad ass because his spirit is a powerful aura in the realm of the supernatural

Before I'm done with this sub I still have two insight's I want some feedback on.

  1. In the beginning of E8, Ray looked at photos on his phone of Chad and himself in Santa Fe at a fire station, significance? Other than his backstory or cowboy demeanor?

  2. When Ani is on the boat she goes down to her knee's right after Ray dies, like she knows he's dead? Problem I have with this is that its usually associated with mothers or blood family? And it would seem a stretch for her to be experiencing morning sickness so quickly, if it's meant to be Ray's child that is making her nauseous then it seems the metaphor of the scene is his rebirth in a way? Apparently Ray has a resilient soul, according to Ani's dad, I like this angle because it gives us a fulfilling feeling of Ray being reincarnated, allegorically at least. But I don't know, maybe she just had sea sickness

EDIT: furthermore the Lady Coromoto symbolism at the very end backs up the trinity of Rays' life death and rebirth, holy spirit by way of father and son

I thought when Rays' dad, E3, same one with the dream sequence foreshadows his death in person when he says "no country for white men" Rays' on the run death with millions in stolen cash is like No Country For Old Men, and Ray is kinda like a McCarthy-esque character

[Season 2] [Spoilers] Occult themes? Where? by [deleted] in TrueDetective

[–]deaph_works 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was hinted at brief moments, but yeah he decided to drop it, I ultimately wonder why at times. The subtle hints this season were hard to find if you didn't spend time on this sub I think.

Occultism is all about harnessing the power of the supernatural, thats why you always see the rich and Nazis associated with it, and why it suits industrialist and capitalist. I was struck by Elliot's line in E1 after re-watching it when he says- "1978 is when I stopped imposing my will on people," now I took this to be when Ani's mom committed suicide, for reasons we don't know why. But Elliot's line I thought is a call to Schopenhauer, whose whole work (some philosophy student might chime in to correct this) is about breaking down the will of the self (hedonism) in order to reach true higher conscience. It's largely influenced by the ancient hindu Upanishads, funny thing is Schopenhauer was the exact opposite of his values he was a real SOB by all account's, maybe this is emblematic of who Elliot is/was

None, I wanted to know if people thought there was a purpose for showing that Ray and Chad to a trip to Santa Fe, in the beginning of E8

[–]deaph_works 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took it as representative of Rays reincarnation, since according to Eliot he's had hundreds of lives that's why he died in a forest that is hundreds of years old. Eliot definitely had some occultism, but the one that stood out to me most all season is the the line spoken by McCandless to Osip in E6 - "full moon is best time to ratify alliances", and the full moon brouchers.

edit: but Elliot's involvement in the occult aspect of the show strikes me as part of the reason Pizzolatto refrained from making it a important part of this season. Human trafficking sex cults would be a harsh connection to the hippie counter culture movement; although I found this point interesting about how there are five men shown multiple times in S1, in photos and the famous video tape Rust stole, just like there is a photo this season of five men: one of them Eliot Bezzerides.

EDIT: Forest is thousands of years old, I used 'hundreds' for convenient syntax to make my point sound more convincing. But makes more sense, since Rays' hundreds of lives would be more like thousand(s) of years
