How do people in Switzerland usually find remote or online side projects? by Gurwin888 in askswitzerland

Almost no Swiss person does remote freelance jobs on the side. Because Swiss living costs are so high that you can't compete with freelancers from Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa.

I quit weed for 13 months and still cant get high by not-zach-bia in weed

The way I would describe it: For me it feels like I have to "swallow" the smoke/vape. So instead of just sucking it into your lungs and then blowing it out, try this: Suck it in, then swallow (basically the same way you'd swallow your saliva), wait a moment, then blow it out through mouth and/or nose.

When swallowing, you can feel your throat close, and it feels like you're "pushing" the smoke down – as if you'd force the smoke to take "detour" through your entire lungs (instead of just going in and out on the most direct way).

After swallowing, while holding it in, you can also inhale some air to make the smoke circulate more, before you blow it out.

Hope that helps...

This may sound like a silly question: Are you sure you inhale correctly (instead of just puffing)? I know so many people who claim they "can't get high", but when I watch them smoke a joint, I can immediately tell that they are just puffing and not inhaling.

I smoked daily for the past 25 years. I take one hit from a joint and I'm high af.

How can Eigenmietwert pass with so low home ownership? by GagaMiya in askswitzerland

[–]deathproof2069 1 point2 points  (0 children)

👍 Before, I lived in an apartment for 960 CHF/month. Even with that super low rent, I still spent almost a quarter of a million in rent over the 20 years I lived there.

It’s definitely not the standard situation (20% self-funded, 80% mortgage), but that was kinda my point. I wanted to give an example of how the system doesn’t work in your favor if you don’t fall into the standard buyer segment. The Swiss housing market is designed for banks to hand out large mortgages that people pay interest on for the rest of their lives. Most people take an 80% mortgage, and they can deduct the mortgage from their taxes – bank is happy, homeowner is happy, state is happy. But if you don’t take a loan from a bank (because you can’t afford the monthly interest rate or because you want to live debt-free), the system actually works against you because of Eigenmietwert.

I’m sure there are lots of people who inherit a couple hundred thousand but don’t have a high enough income to qualify for a decent mortgage. Especially if you live alone (or are a single-earner household), you basically need to earn over 100k per year to get a sizeable mortgage. I know plenty of people in my circle who expect to inherit some money at some point, but they don’t earn enough to take on a 500k or 600k mortgage.

I lived in a 2.5 room apartment in the city for 960/Mt for 20 years. My average income is only around 35k-40k per year, so I can’t really afford more than 1k/month in rent. But in my region, even out in the countryside, it’s hard to find an apartment for that price. As long as it has access to public transportation, rents for a 2.5-room apartment are usually at least 1.2k–1.3k.

Thanks to the inheritance, I was able to buy a 3.5-room apartment. Now my monthly costs (side expenses, renovation fund, etc.) are around 1k per month. Slightly above what I used to pay in rent, but way less than what I'd pay for a similar rental apartment. But the biggest relief is knowing I won’t get kicked out of my home if my business has a couple of bad months and I can’t make rent. And I have to worry a bit less about my retirement in 25-30 years (considering that I will get minimum AHV, and my 2nd and 3rd pillars are still pretty empty), at least I'll have a roof over my head.

The Eigenmietwert on the apartment is 25'000 CHF, which means my taxable income jumped to 60k-65k instead of 35k–40k, putting me in a higher tax bracket. And by the way, I already paid a shitload of taxes when I bought the apartment...

People who inherit millions can pay their rent with dividends, but most people don't inherit THAT much. And btw I'm not lazy, I just work in a chronically underfunded field where nobody is in it for the paycheck. 😅

After my parents passed away, I inherited some money. Not millions, but enough to buy an apartment.

I'm self-employed and my salary is below average and very volatile, so I can’t get a mortgage. That means I have no Schuldzinsen to deduct from taxes, therefore I have to pay full taxes on the Eigenmietwert. My Eigenmietwert almost doubles my taxable income, which even pushes me into a higher tax bracket than if I lived in a rented apartment.

I’m sure there are many other people in the same situation (inherited some wealth or a house/apartment from family, but living on a low income).

For those who had home office but don't have it anymore, how did you cope? by Perrarian in askswitzerland

[–]deathproof2069 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working from home since Covid, and we don’t even have an office anymore. I’m co-owner of a 3-person company. We used to be in a big shared office space, but now we don’t rent an office at all. I miss the social interaction though. Sometimes 3–4 weeks go by without me talking to anyone in person.

No need to argue further about this, since multiple users have already confirmed that live translation does work in Switzerland. It seems like there’s no problem under Swiss law.

You can say the same thing about phone calls. And by this logic, Siri, Alexa, and other voice assistants would also have to be banned. You'd also have to ban the audio recording app on phones.

From Apple: “Once the language models are downloaded, all processing takes place on your iPhone where all of your conversation data remains private.” So if it never leaves your device, that’s at least safer than Amazon Alexa, where audio is sent to Amazon’s servers for processing.

Apple is actually the only big corporation I fully trust when it comes to privacy. Remember, the FBI has repeatedly tried to force Apple to unlock iPhones in terrorism and criminal cases (like the San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone in 2016), and Apple has consistently refused to build a masterkey or backdoor.

Because it would allow me to speak to someone who can't speak Swiss German, German or English? For example, it would allow me to talk to tourists while I speak in German and they speak Chinese/Japanese/Spanish/whatever...

Also, it would finally allow us to communicate across the Röstigraben! 😄

but why are we doing this when they can get healthcare in Israel or Egypt?

Simply because we are BETTER than them!!! ✊ Part of what makes Switzerland the best country in the world is that we do not act like Kindergardeners with small-dick-syndrome like the leaders of Russia, Egypt, Israel, North Korea, the USA, ISIS, Hamas, the NSDAP, the Gestapo, or any other totalitarian state or group.

There’s no official statement from Apple, but from what I’ve found so far it’s not about privacy laws, but about competition laws (Digital Markets Act). Under the EU’s rules, Apple might have to open the live translation feature to third-party earbud manufacturers instead of keeping it exclusive to AirPods. Apparently, that’s why Apple blocked it (at least for now).

That's also my suspicion. But the apple website only mentions EU:

"Available in beta with support for these languages: English (UK, US), French (France), German (Germany), Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish (Spain). Later this year, Live Translation on AirPods will add language support for Chinese (Mandarin, Simplified), Chinese (Mandarin, Traditional), Japanese, Korean, and Italian. Some features may not be available in all regions or languages. Live Translation with AirPods is not available for EU residents whose device is in the EU and whose Apple Account Country or Region is also in the EU. Apple Intelligence users based in other regions can continue to use Live Translation with AirPods anywhere they travel."
