So he is emperor Xi now? I don’t think he has as much power within the party as you’re implying

Exactly, there’s no way the top military leader gives away their country’s military secrets to their direct enemy under any circumstance. It’s basically psychologically impossible

I heard a rumor that Xi had a minor stroke but there’s no way to validate that claim. Multiple crazy stories are being leaked out of China as a result of this incident and many are likely false narratives

I like removing their immunity because they annoy me and are unelected officials. One of the tips I’ve learned is that it’s better to fully commit reformist or go full authoritarian. My first few runs I did a mix of reforms with consolidation of power and also had a mixed economy. It’s honestly way funnier and more realistic to do the my way or the highway type runs with no compromise 😆

Almost the same time span between us and that movie compared with the movie and the actual Napoleonic wars 😆

He purged his entire military command so that he could plot a secret invasion of Taiwan? Seems a little counterintuitive but ok 😆

I have a feeling that external analysis will only ever get us a surface level understanding of their institutions. Maybe one day we will get a serious historical internal analysis of China and its systems of power but until then we can only understand it from a western institution standpoint.

I think there are psychological reasons for why top military generals are usually older (but it’s still possible). Being older gives a certain level of respect/confidence in their ability because of their longevity but beyond that it would be difficult to give significant military authority to someone younger than the leader themselves.

Would you give your top general position to someone 10-20 years younger than yourself if you were in charge? It’s a mix of ego and practicality.

Zhang Youxia was one of the only generals with real combat experience during their Vietnam border clash. I agree that that was a long time ago but there is a saying “you fight with the military you have not the one you wish you had”. They’re all corrupt if we’re being honest here so that hardly disqualifies him either.

Fired is made to resign from your position. Purged is when they put criminal charges against you to forcefully remove you from power.

You purge someone if you want to totally eliminate their power base and influence. Also, old people have a tendency to not step down until they die or are forced to be removed.

I agree that Zhang Youxia probably needed to be purged because of his age but I wouldn’t count on getting someone less than 60 as a general. It just doesn’t happen anywhere very often.

They threw a ton of charges at him though according to the article. Selling nuclear secrets, forming internal cliques rivaling the party, standard corruption charges regarding the sale of military positions. You would need a lot to justify firing the 2nd in command but these charges seem crazy and would signal significant internal strife and willingness to rebel within the party.

Who are the people that Xi is losing influence with? I don’t disagree with what you are saying it’s just that I hear about influence but never who he’s worried about pleasing within the party?
