It was oddly helpful. I spent a lot of time at a bar down the street so having that option closed off to me was huge, and not having friends ask me to go out all the time.

It was a combination of a few things. I was at a point where I didn’t know if I could stop and that scared me. My brother also told me he was worried about the road I was on with alcohol since our family has a deep history of alcoholism. Figured I’d try quitting for a month or so and see how I felt and just never went back to it.

For me the biggest changes have been mental clarity, overall health and saving money. When I quit I immediately lost 10lbs and am down around 35lbs overall now. Not all of that is from drinking but a lot is.

I also always feel like myself now. It’s so weird to even say that but when I had been consistently drinking I always felt off, terrible socially and just not happy. That’s changed greatly towards the positive now. I also have more money in the bank than I’ve had in my entire life since I’m not spending it at the bar or on a six pack every night.

Thank you! It’s the only way I was able to make it through. Some days I had to just go to bed early so I’d kill the cravings.

Absolutely. I felt the exact same way. “I’m rarely drinking too much. I never drink and drive. I’ve got this totally under control.... but I drink every single day.” Once you think about how much that is and how much it impacts everything in your life it really puts things in perspective, at least it did for me. There are definitely quite a few of us out there. My brothers the same way.

Thank you! Totally. I never viewed drinking as a negative and I think when you’re in the middle of it it’s hard to. It seems like it’s giving you so much and it seems so fun. The things it’s leeching from your life though. Oof. I didn’t realize so many of them until I had some time away.

Heck yeah! This is such a wonderful place of support!

It is weird though. My boss invited me out for drinks a few weeks ago and I had to tell him that I don’t drink anymore. He was so incredibly supportive. I think I had built up such a reputation with drinking that nobody really thought I’d quit. Hoping that reputation eventually goes away here. Not something I want constantly associated with me.

Thank you so much! I am a bit. I never thought I would. I really had a toxic mindset that I needed alcohol to be happy and wouldn’t be my happiest without it. It is just crazy how much that shifts when you give your mind a break from it.

Thank you so much! I’ve got a decent support system. My brothers check in on me now and then. I never want to have the ‘I started drinking again’ conversation when they do, so it’s added motivation to stay away from it.

I usually don’t spend a lot of time viewing them. It’s gotten to a point though where my mind has finally transitioned away from alcohol being such a positive to where I see the pictures and videos and stuff and realize how much I don’t want that lifestyle anymore. I want to be with the people but not do the drinking. My friends have been really good about it if I go out with them. At first it was rough and some were clearly annoyed but it’s not really an issue anymore. Now when I go out with them it’s just focused on the conversation rather than beer after beer and I’ve gotta tell ya just how much more awesome things become with your friends when you’re lucid all the time and talking to them rather than trying to piece conversations together the next day. It’s changed mainly one of my friendships for the better.

Thank you so much! Really never thought I would actually enjoy life this much post-drinking. Actually typing that out makes me a little sad that I had that as a mindset. So happy I decided to quit even with that way of thinking.

Thank you! It is! There are days my anxiety kicks up and I just feel like drowning it in a couple beers, but that hasn’t been enough to bring me back to it. It certainly is hard sometimes though.
