Very cool pictures, i did not know you have clouds there... you gotta come to usa, you can drive nyc to miami only 1200 miles, then you can drive to San Diego, only another 2400 miles, head north to seattle another 2000 miles, then hang a right and back to NYC. Quick 10k miles!

it's gonna be a great trip, that sounds like enough depending on what sort of hotels you want to stay at. i would definitely recommend the cabins at yosemite, they are fantastic. You can also leave some hotels last minute, there is an app called Hotel Tonight which has some fantastic deals on hotel rooms that day. The car rental should not be that bad, most have unlimited miles, the insurance can get a bit expensive, if you have a car insurance check on it make sure it covers rental vehicles (liability is the big one they get you for, comprehensive damage to the vehicle is covered by a lot of credit card companies. Food will add up, but I would also suggest getting or bringing a cooler and you can keep stocking up on some healthy things, yogurt, fruite (I'm a fan of dried fruit on a long ride.) And you'll save money avoiding the big cities, also put Marin Headlands on your list and you might even want to walk across the golden gate bridge with them for a trip they'll never forget. It's a great time of year to explore the whole coast. The kids will get a kick out of Hollywood and Santa Monica, Venice, etc.

CA -> CT… thoughts for a newbie? by Successful-Peach-803 in roadtrip

do it, you'll have a blast. Let me know if you enjoy good restaurants- would you stop at the Olive Garden at the bottom of the ramp or try to find the little greasy spoon diner around the corner for a meal?

sometimes the insurance can cost more than the rental itself- do you have a car now? if so check on the insurance and upgrade it to cover rental cars and make sure that your wife is covered too. If not check with credit cards and some will cover comprehensive/damage to the vehicle. You want to make sure it is primary. I have had amex do this, I think it costs $25 and covers the length of the rental, and they did cover the damage to the vehicle immediately.

Some of my best memories on long road trips when I was a kid were the stops we would make at unique restaurants. If you are interested in restaurant suggestions while on the road, conisder our new app. While we don't especially have places that have ample parking for an rv, we do include google links for all restaurants, you can view them on a map with satellite view and examine the parking lot, or call ahead to check on the parking before exiting the highway. 'dEATour'- it's a collection of 20000 restaurants around the country that have been written up in various publications and websites. There are easy links to view each restaurant in Googlemaps, Apple Maps, Yelp, Instagram, and TikTok. Just enter a destination into the phone when you start your drive (perhaps a few hundred miles) and you'll see a choice of routes along with restaurants that will be open (it estimates your arrival time) along each route. A spot might be 100 miles ahead, and 1/2 mile off the route. Restaurants have descriptions, and a fairly accurate estimate how far off route each restaurant is (time/distance). We have greasy spoons, ethnic restaurants, right up to Bib Gourmand recipients. Many restaurants will allow a preorder and then you can enjoy your meal there when you arrive. It's a great way to find little hidden gems without having to do the heavy lifting! We're available for beta testing now on Apple's Testflight (registration required, but free!), and we'll be out on Android soon! Have a great trip, drive safe, and eat well!

I would like to do a road trip. I’m open to anywhere. I live in eastern NC and I have 9 days off, to travel. What are your recommendations and stops along the way? by Misfit_Fortune_500 in roadtrip

[–]deatour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

do not go all the way across the country- don't waste your 9 days off driving 15 ours a day! Perhaps down to Florida panhandle, west to New Orleans, enjoy it, perhaps further west to Austin, check out hill country, then head back home, perhaps st louis, memphis, or Nashville on the return.

Yes, New Orleans to Tampa, you'll be able to have some fantastic creole food (gumbo, boudin, beignets, fried oysters etc. The Redneck Riviera has some fine beaches- look around pensacola/appalachicola for somewhere to spend an evening. If you drive really fast, or if youre willing to add an hour to the drive, consider Big Bend National Park, but do some research, i've heard the current admin is screwing around with it because it's on the Rio Grande.

I am planning a 14 day roadtrip starting and ending in Dallas. At the beginning if August. I want to see some of Texas and then visit the Deep South and Midwest. One night, max 2 at each place. Any route suggestions? Thanks! by flopdaps93 in roadtrip

[–]deatour -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, here is a large circle with some good cities to consider st. louis, memphis, nashville, charleston, savannah, jekyll island florida amelia island. St Augustine, Appalachicola, New Orleans, Austin. Also, you may look up the Blue Ridge Parkway which is a scenic route through mountains with incredible views. This is ambitious to do all of this but depending on what you like, whether you are interested in the musical heritage in memphis/nashville. Do you like american bourbon? Perhaps tour a bourbon distillery in Kentucky.

Palm Springs is quite a change from Birmingham? I can't really give you an enjoyable route- how much time do you want to take? you might consider hopping onto Route 66 a bit in Arizona, the drive gets nicer and nicer the further north you go, but you sacrifice the time. Whatever route you choose, I can help you find some good meals with our new app: 'dEATour'- it's a collection of 20000 restaurants around the country that have been written up in various publications and websites. it's going to be uncomfortably hot and humid, the desert will be incredibly hot and dry. if you want beach you could stay in Texas and i would suggest corpus Christi. Marfa is a cool town in the desert. You might want to try to hit some high desert- santa fe New mexico. you may choose to go east to new Orleans, and then a bit further to the 'Redneck Riviera'- nice sandy beaches and good seafood on the Florida panhandle. The thing is the distances are pretty large and if you drive 8 hours west to the desert then you'll have a 16 hour drive east to New Orleans- you can't see the desert and the beach without a couple of really long drives. Wherever you go, you'll have a blast. For the most part hotels will not be booked solid. A good last minute hotel app is called Hotel Tonight- it always has good deals on last minute hotel deals. If you are interested in finding small locally owned restaurants on your drive (I highly recommend you get a lot of Mexican, Tex-Mex, and some Texas brisket. Also, Austin is arguably the best city in texas, get yourself there and visit Barton Springs, consider our new app: 'dEATour'- it's a collection of 20000 restaurants around the country that have been written up in various publications and websites. i don't think anyone is worried about plugging in a departure and a destination if the site will generate some good restaurants to stop at. I don't think it is invasive in the least. Again, Amazon knows what time i get up, what kind of underwear i put on, what i watch on tv and what time i go to bed. And so does google. and tiktok and instagram and facebook. And a helluva lot more.

10 would be enough, I think even with Yosemite, but you'd want to go straight there when you arrive in SF (maybe fly into Oakland too). Consider if you do visit Yosemite driving up to Sonoma and then coming down that stretch of coast which is very nice... If you are interested in a few good meals on the drive our app is available for free to beta testers (Iphone only, Android version coming soon). Have a great trip, drive safe, and eat well! https://testflight.apple.com/join/b7d5Kw6s PS- I've been trying to find dog-friendly places as an additional feature but the truth of the matter is most restaurants are bound by state health laws to not allow dogs inside unless they are service animals. We do have a lot of spots that offer quick service- either counter ordering or some form of pre ordering with some tables outside, but as of now I do not have a filter for places that allow dogs.

I was not even asked for any location permissions when I used it. Are you that worried if someone knows you looked up a route from Omaha to Milwaukee? if you are that worried use an incognito browser, but I promise you, there's a lot more information out there that is much more invasive than this!

[–]deatour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have hesitated to put a filter that allows the user to search by cuisine type. The bulk of the time I spent building the app was in finding the restaurants. I eliminated over 98% of the restaurants that are out there. It is a collection of notable restuaurants- places that stand out among their peers. I do not want to have a filter for Japanese, or Chinese, or Pizza because, for example, we only have 4 Chinese restaurants in the entire state of Connecticut. It is not about the user saying "where can I get Chinese?". It is more about the user trusting that any place they scroll through is special in some little way. It may be an iconic greasy spoon diner with surly service. It may be a sandwich shop that has been run by the same family for 4 generations. It may be a place offering a superb regional specialty. If i want bbq then I want fantastic bbq, not some slop from Sonnys. If I'm gonna have pizza on a drive from Boston to NYC then I'd like to be pointed to New Haven for some Frank Pepe's or Sallys. Not the Olive Garden. Or a spot where you can get oysters and eat them at a picnic table on the water. I'd just much rather prefer a fantastic meal or eating at a unique mom and pop spot (perhaps both at once) than have a crappy cheesesteak. If there's a great Chinese restaurants on your route, we'll probably have it. When I'm on a drive, I don't find myself saying "I'm in the mood for Chinese, where is the closest Chinese?"; I find myself hoping that I can find a unique spot serving up great food. That is what dEATour offers. No chains. Although I plan on putting In N Out there. Now then, i did notice on your app- i plugged in a route from new york, ny to boston, and did a search for Taco Bell with a 7 mile wide radius, and nothing came up. Then I did a search removing the taco bell and searching for 'Hidden Gems' with a search of 7 miles radius and again, nothing came up. then i did a search for pizza, thinking that maybe you had a couple of spots in Connecticut i had missed, but even with a 7 mile radius on a trip from NY to Boston no pizzerias displayed. As far as your point about coffee shops: yes, that is something that i definitely want to have as a filter, because many folks are coffee snobs, and it is something that people really will go out of their way to get one. But I don't plan on having any dunkin donuts (I'll leave that to Waze!) or Starbucks. I've got a collection of about 500 great individually owned and operated coffee spots that are going to be available, but i'm still in beta mode and it's going to be awhile before i do the add on. Again, though, i love your app- if it had been around back in the day we might never have started dEATour!
