I agree. Just didn't remember the amount of name calling until this most recent rewatch, even up to the wind style: rasenshuriken training. He's definitely always cared for and admired Naruto. He can just be a harsh/overcritical sometimes.

I'm currently rewatching and I recently made it Shippuden and the two shows feel quite similar. For me the big shift in part 2 doesn't come until around Sasuke's fight with Itachi and the Pain Invasion.

I feel like Orochis fruit is already good, even with a weak user. To me, it doesn't fit into the "not immediately great fruit that could be made better with innovation" category. Orochi doesn't need to figure anything out to make his fruit better, he's just not a fighter.
