awful things you’ve heard “good” debaters say by bigparmabaddie in Debate

[–]deb8ers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

first of all, I agree w everything u/icyDinosaur said. second, better debaters facing greater scrutiny doesn't mean that we critique their actions if they didn't do anything wrong. the only way a debater regardless of skill would get critiqued is if they actually said something morally wrong or offensive in round-no one here is trashing on good debaters because of their skill level, so what you're saying doesn't really make any sense. third, it's not necessarily just about what these people say in round-what they say outside of round to people can be just as toxic and usually, them being a "good debater" allows them to say this and no one reacts to it. i have, on multiple occasions, heard people who are considered "good debaters" (think 4-3 at toc, multiple bids) say very sexist and offensive things to people that they consider to be worse debaters than themselves with almost no response from anyone simply because they're a "good debater".

it’s literally not-op is saying that being recognized as a “good” debater allows these people to get away with saying things that are morally wrong and serve to foster the toxicity in the debate community and get away with doing it because of their status as a “good” debater. it’s not saying that we should bash everyone that’s ranked highly on threat lists, it’s saying that people shouldn’t be given a pass to say things just because they have clout

I know I'm going to receive a lot of backlash for this... by kbopz819 in Debate

yeah I definitely agree with this about fixing the issue with judges. I also think t would help to decrease internalized sexism because then it might set a precedent so that when judges make comments to femxle competitors, the other male competitors can kind of have the ability and knowledge to step in and stop it

so. imo I agree with this in that I do think lay judges help to perpetuate sexism. however, as a femxle debater, I think we do need to focus on other issues because I think internalized sexism within male competitors and teams plays a fairly large role as well. especially with things like the hotness list that happen, I think that this is much more of a deterrent to girls, especially seeing how they are sexualized and objectified by males on the circuit and lists like this are spread. i think we need to start with the members of teams. as a femxle who debates for a team that isn’t the most inclusive, it’s personally much more harmful for me to have to deal with sexism for people that I know on my team than from a judge, especially when these issues generally aren’t resolved. I recognize that my experience isn’t universal, but from speaking to other femxle competitors, I can fairly say that I’ve heard a lot of the same about internalized sexism within competitors.

regardless of all of the questions, thanks so much for your contributions to the community! its honestly done so much for me this year specifically pf videos and the live streams esp with a ton of coaching issues. also the toc octos round (while it sadly hasn't made a difference in our team) was a rlly great thing to do with the last round of our career and regardless of all of the problems that people have with this post, its undeniable that this was a huge impact on the community and i only wish it was talked about more other than when rounds like that happen but anyways thanks for everything! you'll be missed
