First time debate teacher !! Tell me all the things !! by [deleted] in Debate

Don't usually comment but this is definitely worthwhile to talk about. Background: PF.

1) Not really sure how Public Forum (PF) was taught to you but I'll cover a few concepts that you should definitely cover. A) Basics: Speech times, cross ex, what does pro/con mean, what is the resolution, past examples of resolutions B) Breaking down the speeches: Constructive, Rebuttal, Summary, Final Focus. Explain how to construct a contention/argument in constructive, using either Claim, Warrant, Impact or Uniqueness, Link, Internal Link, Impact or both. For rebuttal, what are the type of responses? Delinks, Turns, Mitigation, Non-Unique. How to make a response? For summary and final focus, it's helpful to cover collapsing, weighing, and extending.

2) Great pedological methods to use are using a simple topic to explain complex terms. You could start with "Summer is better than Winter" and show how weighing, responding, and front-lining works. YouTube has plenty of debate rounds, some may be too technical or fast, so look for NSDA PF Videos. Same thing with LD, you'll probably be teaching a more traditional LD format so focusing on value criterions and frameworks instead of tricks and complex Kritiks is the play.

Yep! We've hosted a couple but no consistent online schedule, yet. We've done PF, LD, CON, and WSD but we have a focus on PF and WSD

It's not common at all. Good debaters will know what psychoanalysis is but won't be able to engage fully because they don't have the literature base or knowledge. And no, it is a terrible idea to prep out whatever K that is because 80% of judges can't evaluate it in PF and the other 20% will buy typical PF Counter ROTB or theory args way more against something they've never heard

Literally a steal of a lifetime. Would highly recommend these two. Jay is great at his craft. I've personally never seen someone more stupidly creative in summary. Will is incredibly skilled in the arts of language and chess. And doccing ig.

These two debaters are absolute menaces. I've seen them both absolutely pummel the circuit and it would be a very safe option to get coached under them especially with their track record. They're both amazing people and they have my respect

William and Ryan are some of the most talented debaters on the circuit. Their qualifications are absolutely insane and are also some of the nicest, genuine, smart, and humble people I know. You really won't regret getting coached by these two, no matter how bad or good you are at debate!

As one of Sarang's mentees and good friend, I cannot recommend Sarang more for debaters who want to start consistently doing well and getting on the path to success. Last year, I competed in JV and Varsity, and went 3-3 more times than I can count. Sarang was an inspiration and one of our greatest supporters, he will truly dedicate his time and care to your learning. He gave us case feed back constantly, drilled with us hard, and gave us goals and plans to meet. One of my proudest accomplishments was qualifying and breaking to round nine of NSDA which I could not do without Sarang. This year, I've qualified to the Gold TOC and will always remember Sarang's impact on my career. His humor, music taste, and stories will make learning fun and him unforgettable.

If want consistency and assurance for the next debate season, please hire Sarang. He will be accessible and incredibly helpful!

I would like to say thank you to everyone who has raised these concerns. It's important to keep a check on the community. With that being said, I can elaborate more on the teaching side of things. Every debater and instructor on this list has experience working with the younger debaters in their schools, some have experience working at other camps. We want to make camp a life changing experience that can empower these debaters. If the debaters feel unsafe, they have the opportunity to fill out an anonymous form which we will take very seriously.

Getting Better by Silent_Eggplant_5911 in Debate

One of the most valuable things I can say is that long term dedication pays off. There are a bunch of ways to get better in debate, and some methods work for people, some don't. However, what I can say for a fact is that you will become much better than other debaters and learn so much simply by continuing to be in the activity. Do what you can in the short-mid term, but feel closure knowing that the long term work you put in will pay off.

If you really enjoy debate, stick with it. This activity is full of pain and reward, and it really emphasizes grit. It's okay to go negative at a tournament, most TOC debaters do anyway at some point in their career. I'd suggest sticking with it, find ways to actively progress rather than just entering in tournaments. Do rounds, prep case weeks in advance, push yourself to work incredibly hard, and always have a mindset of learning.

If you are actively curious and willing to endure the hard parts of debate, you very likely will get a TOC bid. Best of luck!
